I remember Summer of 1976. I was 12 years old and my parents and I were in a store somewhere in Minnesota (don't remember the town) and while they were looking for something I went and looked at the records. I found the 2112 album. I had to have it. I worked on my mom for a while till she finally relented and let me buy it. We drove back to my sisters house (we were visiting her at the time) and immediately played it on her record player. and played it again, and again. I have never looked back. Neil Peart was class act, a one of a kind musician that everyone can look up to. "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend." Even though I never knew him or met him, he played a HUGE role in my youth. My condolences to Neils family, to Alex and Geddy, and to all Rush fans across the world. Its a sad day indeed......

@@terraavis What else IS a fan to the person they idolize? For the most part, strangers. Their thoughts almost HAVE TO go something like "You like my music. Great. I appreciate that. A giant amongst all drummers and one of my many influences in my playing! He will truly be missed especially that connection between one drummer to another so such a major loss for people who were inspired by him. If my comment is read watch the recent video from DW drums called the masters of resonance and it has Neil Peart and John Good together doing a 1 hr video from start to finish on Pearts special made one of one kit made out of 1000 year old bog oak, it's incredible to even find wood that's been preserved by water and it's over a thousand years old. So much history that wood has been through and it was made into a beautiful 1 of 1 kit just for Pearts last upcoming final tour he was planning. He is the only man to play that kit and especially one that's that old. Interesting story but now since he's the only one to touch and play that special kit I'm sure it will be put behind a glass case in the DW special dedication section only to be looked at out of respect! Love you Neil Peart you will be missed but your Spirit will continue to live as long as there's drummer's.

True Story: earlier this morning, my dad started going through stuff in the basement, he got his box of old concert memorabilia (mostly rush), and started sorting through the memories on his bedroom floor like a little kid. I left to go get some food and hang with friends, when one of my friends showed me the rolling Stone article of his passing.. I immediately called my dad and told him, and he said he was literally just holding a pair of sticks he got from Neil after a show in the 80's. My dad was a drummer most of his life, and Neil was his all time favorite (like any sensible drummer/musician), and I just thought it was interesting that he happened to be holding a pair of Neil's drumsticks right as he learned the news. Neil’s passing has wrecked me and this is why: Neil died from brain cancer. A glioblastoma, to be exact. It’s the very same thing that killed my dad. That brain cancer had a horrific effect on Daddy. It completely stripped him of every ounce of dignity, personality and intelligence that he ever possessed. His last few months were a nightmare for him and for us, his family. My heart absolutely breaks when I think about what Neil most likely had to endure before he died. I’m just shattered, completely shattered. RIP Neil. You’ll never know exactly how much you meant to your fans. You were greatly loved and respected, and you will be sorely missed. You will NEVER be forgotten. 💔😭 Thank you so much for making this video, Rick.
@jinpa885 жыл бұрын
Donna M - my father, too, passed from having a glioblastoma ( about 13 prior to Neil) and I thought the exact same things. Morbidly wondering how it affected Neil, and hoping his suffering at the end was minimal. My prayers to his family and to anyone affected by this horrific form of cancer, and to all who fight cancer. Rick - thanks for sharing your thoughts. Love your videos!! Keep up the great work.

Very sorry to hear that, Donna. Life can be very cruel.

@Putting on the foil Well, I'm not sure if it's related to this specific form of cancer but Neil did smoke cigarettes for a long time. Which is neither here nor there, really--everyone has their weaknesses. Actually, it's still mostly genetic luck: my father in law smoked for 70-odd years and finally succumbed to lung cancer at 86: less than year from diagnosis to demise. Not too shabby, really: it was rough for him at the end, the last two weeks, but I've seen much, much worse, and in younger people, too. It's never "good" -- few deaths are -- but it wasn't as horrible as it can be.

Thank you for saying what I and so many Peart fans feel. I wasn’t even a Rush fan until I picked up his first book, then read his second book about dealing with the death of his daughter, then his wife. I started listening to him, became a huge fan in 2003, when I was early fifties, wondering how did I not appreciate Rush sooner. So, I bought 4 tickets for over 1700 dollars and took my wife, son and friend to Toronto. We had such amazing seats, so awesome. I’m more into guitar playing but have purchased most of his dvds, books, and most of Rush’s cd’s. I loved that he was not just an incredible craftsman of percussion but also a highly intelligent author with a continuous thirst for knowledge. I believe the sadness he suffered was what finally caused the cancer that took him far too soon. To me, his passing is as emotional as when John Lennon was taken from us. I know, two totally different things but like the end of an era. Forgive me for rambling here but I just felt like venting my deep shock and sadness.

January 10th, 2020, I was driving and listening to classic rock, and the DJ can on and announced Neil's passing. He delivered a wonderful eulogy. He then went on to play 30 minutes of Rush. I hate to admit this I didn't know much about the band other than the radio play. The DJ spoke so glowingly about him that it peaked my interest, so I proceeded to do a deep dive into the band, and I was hooked. I proceeded to listen to all their albums and watch every video I could find. What a class act Neil was. When have you ever heard of a rock drummer being the main lyricist of the band. Phil Collins of Genesis is the only one that comes to mind. Neil was shy and very private. Something you don't see in the entertainment world. He, without a doubt, was the greatest drummer of all time. RIP 🙏

Almost two weeks on, I still find myself getting emotional about Neil's passing. Yes, Rush was a huge part of my musical life, and they were my favourite band for a couple of years at the time of Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. But it's really the opportunity to see them in interviews over the last 10 years or so that made me see what makes Neil (and Geddy and Alex) Special. What extraordinarily fine, thoughtful, intelligent, and kind people. Neil, every time I listen to you speak I feel inspired, even more so than when I hear you drum, although that was obviously amazing too. Farewell, sir.
