Hello all you Drum Nerds, hopefully you're safe and well. Today we explore Neil Peart & The Buddy Rich Big Band - Drum Review.
The professor himself was asked and fronted the Buddy Rich big band at a memorial in the early 90's and this is a crazy display of his absolute unmatched talent.
The original video is here - • Video
Having one legend pay tribute to another is a wonderful thing and no better has it been displayed than in the above video.
Stay safe and thanks again for stopping by and subscribing.
Be well and keep your stick on the ice,
Colin

Nil was beyond, not just a professor of drums. He was a genius of lyrics & combined to a new kind of music wich i calld "rush rock".

Tamir, he was absolutely all of that! A true gentleman and a very incredible lyricist, drummer and musician. Rush Rock is a great way to identify it, let's make it an actual genre classification :) Hope you're well.

How people didn’t see Neil as the greatest drummer of our time is beyond me

Great Reaction. Neil was the man. Just a legend and an incredible man, and stands in a class of percussionists all by himself. He is missed by so many and it is so great to him continuously honored and remembered for his dedication to perfection (and a little cowbell never hurts, lol). Plus, he was the magic puzzle to piece to what Rush needed. Composition and his songwriting helped give us 40 years of quality music from three of the best musicians in the industry. Seriously, the three of them did more onstage, then probably 80% of people making music today. So missed.

LV thanks for the kind words and sorry for the delay in response. It can't be summed into words about how much of an impact he had on the drumming world and world as a whole! With his book writing and travels, such a wonderful, gentle and skilled/humble man. They absolutely did more as three than the majority of the modern music industry, I have little time for this ''fake instrument'' backing track style stuff that just gets pumped out today. (grumpy rant over) haha. Welcome to the Drum Nerd family, be well.

@@DRUMNERD 100% agree with you. Almost teo years later and there are songs I still cannot listen to without becoming deeply emotional. I just wouldn't have ever believe that that loss would still effect me so much. I'm thankful for my friend who made me give Rush another chance after a bad experience with an ex, and that I got to see them play live. Yes thankful.

Rush's version of Progressive Rock wasn't far off from traditional Jazz. They weren't Dream Theater or any of those "math rock" bands that create complexity for the sake of complexity. They wrote whatever sounded good. You can see that multiple times via interviews with them, especially where Alex calls things "this doohickey here" and this "flurry thing up there" to describe what he plays. Hell, none of them went to school for it, or even graduated high school in some case.

Surfeit, you make a very good point! They bridged the gaps of math rock, jazz and everything seemingly in the middle - but only played it if it sounded and felt good (so it seemed) It's also very amazing to know that they are the least pretentious musicians going and just almost make fun of those people - Alex's acceptance speech (blah blah blah) is a personal favourite. Welcome to the Drum Nerd family, be well.

This was done before Neil Changed his style , his ride was still hard right, and switching to a single bass drum on his kit, it was 2 more albums and almost 5 years to when he switched to a standard 4 pc set up where he removed the mounted right tom tom(and went to 2 floor toms on his right side) and put his ride more in front of him , he was a always a great drummer but after working with Freddie he went more with traditional grip, although he always mixed his grip with matched grip and trad grip, he was more of a jazz drummer even though he was a rock drummer. I doubt we will ever see another Neil Peart kind of drummer like we will never see another Edward Van Halen. Just great players.

I have played drums, and my 2 sons are drummers. I love Neil Peart but learned something recently I never knew and I have watched a lot of Neil Peart solos. At the 8:33 mark in your video he flips his sticks and plays with the fat end.....I just recently read that he would do this for a bigger hit. First time I ever saw it!

The funny thing is, Neil being the person that he was, had been unhappy with his performance that he had given here. He had also been feeling at the time that he had plateaued in his skill, so after some advice had gone to study with Freddie Gruber.

Scott, you've hit the nail on the head there! What an amazing thing to hear about the G.O.A.T - even at the peak of drumming, he still wasn't satisfied and sought out further tuition. A true legend and gent! Might have to do a Gruber video soon ;) Hope you're well, happy Monday!

@@DRUMNERD Apparently, Freddie Gruber was also Buddy Rich's best friend, and a great in his own right... Check out the book "Ghost Rider" by Neil Peart.

Well, this was fun, wasn’t it? This performance really showed off some dexterity and touch that the casual Rush listener (if there is such a thing) might not have been aware of.

comment about hihat rod length-(he made early in this video)- he intentionally cuts off any additional length of the hihat rod above what he needs so that it does'nt get in the way when he goes for the higher /smaller toms on the left of his larger set- some companies these days often give you two lengths of hihat rods ( normal and shorter) when you purchase the stand ( i know dw does )

I learned and have relied on the Moeller technique since 40 years ago, and I’ll still never have a left hand like Buddy Rich. And I’ve never seen a left hand like his ever since, from anyone. Not Steve Smith, not Dom Famularo, not even Peter Erskine. After Buddy was born, they broke the mold.
