The drumming world, and musical world as a whole, lost a giant when Neil Peart passed away on Tuesday, January 7th, 2020.
Hudson Music shared a long history with Neil, collaborating on two educational DVD/Video projects, Anatomy of a Drum Solo, and Taking Center Stage, as well as the career retrospective book, also titled Taking Center Stage. Prior to these project, Rob Wallis and Paul Siegel collaborated with Neil on the Warner Bros release, A Work in Progress.
Below is a collection of tributes, memories, photos and video from our time with Neil, as well as some memories from fellow drummers.
We hope you enjoy this tribute to our friend, Neil Peart.

Freshman year of college, it's Friday evening, Sept. 2, 1988. It's my Birthday but I don't know anyone. School has just started and I'm a kid from Alaska in Boston. I wander into a room that's blasting Rush at full volume, there are posters on the walls. I introduce myself to the two guys. They're both Sophomores. 33 years years ago and almost not a day goes by that I don't chat or text with my buddy Phil from that chance meeting over a cranked stereo. I listen to Rush a lot, but especially on my Birthday. Thank you Rush. Thank you Neil.

Neil Peart was an Icon in the world of music and drumming. I know this is often said but he truly is my favorite drummer of all time. My uncle introduced me to Rush when I was 10 in 1977. I have spent many hours attempting to air drum to many of their songs. I was telling my Worship Leader in church this morning how as Neil would do when Rush was preparing for a tour I "rehearse to rehearse." Neil would always start practicing on his own before joining Geddy and Alex. When I put an elastic strap on my right pant leg to keep it from catching on the bass drum beater, yeah I learned that from "The Professor." R.I.P. Neil. We miss you everyday but your Amazing legacy lives on in your music and your incredible influence.

I had this discussion with my ex; who challenged me one time, mourning over the loss of a musician. Her question was exactly that, "how can you be so upset and distressed by a loss of a person you've never met?" And I answered this way "I did know him, just on a different level. He was in my every day whether it be on my stereo, car radio or even just in my thoughts or memories for decades since I first heard him. I grew up with him, developed, laughed at his interviews, went on in-depth mind journeys listening to him describe his writing. He carried me through hard times and celebrated times too with his music, and was even at landmark occasions (with his energy) So how did I not know him? I waned on his every word!" That's how important-to-us musicians/celebrities work. We allow them a place in our mind and our hearts and become part of our life, so when they're gone...it hurts like hell!" RIP Neil there will be a hole and hurt for many, whose ears, minds and hearts you occupied 🥁

Neil, as well as Alex and Geddy, were the anti-rock stars. An intensely private man, Neil was seen as stand-offish by his fans, as he rarely granted interviews or signed autographs. The song "Limelight" brings into focus, the immense pressure that musicians face, whilst trying to please their audiences. His lyric "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend" from Limelight kinda' says it all. Music was a job, to which he always strove to improve and perfect.

@@cvn6555 Great comment. That's exactly how I felt. Rush was part of so many memories over the years... whether it be concerts or listening to their music with friends. Unfortunately, I don't believe he did. I don't think he looked at it that way. Geddy and Alex seemed to come to understand it or at least make peace with it. Neil certainly understood he wouldn't have been where he was without fans. But, he shunned any kind of adulation other than appreciating the respect of his peers. Not your typical rock star. Oddly, that's one of the things that was so intriguing about him.

@@cvn6555 I feel Neil did on a certain level but didn't understand the obsession of it all...He loved Keith Moon but didn't want to seek out his Hotel room.I know I would have knocked on his door as a teenager ha ha I also feel or think ha ha that Neil was just so damn Humble of a Person and could not understand his own importance on an Emotional level for us all...does that make any sense? @@longbeard3685 I don't know. By all accounts he was very humble, intelligent and thoughtful. A very private person. Those who knew him could probably tell us more but hopefully they respect his privacy. All we need to know is that we were blessed to have his presence for as long as we did.

Most of us fell in love with the music of Rush. The Innocence the practicality and the purity and especially the integrity. Mr. Neil Peart exemplifies all of these qualities as do all the members of Rush! I read the comments on this KZbin video and notice everyone who has written the comment is a good writer. Also many of you mentioned that you are musicians. As myself. It is amazing how good things bring good people together. Enjoying reading the comments! Many of your comments have given me a different perspective and looking at Mr. Peart And Rush. To me the song, "Subdivisions" encompasses many things here and is a theme for our likeness of Mr. Peart and Rush. Sometimes I feel like an outcast for being a huge fan and "getting" things that are Rush. Then I read comments and talk to others and don't feel so alone... we are our own "Subdivision!"

Life threw blows at him and he got on a motorcycle to see the world instead of dope. I am a drummer and saw Rush a few times, It really was magical to see them perform. When I heard he had passed I've literally had to sit down and just think about life and my younger years and seeing them perform and all the other bands I saw from Black Sabbath to journey to Genesis to Jefferson starship. Those types of bands are no more and it's sad. RIP Neil now that you're with your family.

Reading the comments and thinking my own personal reflections of Neil and of Rush and the impact they had on me growing up. Then I think about just how uncomfortable Neil would be with all of the praise, thoughts and hero status everybody is giving him. Well, he’s just going to have to deal with it, because he earned every personal celebration on here. Truly he was an elite musician and human. Forever missed but how lucky are we to have captured him in our memories along with uncountable recordings. We will all have inner thoughts provoked every time we hear them on the radio for the rest of our lives. What a true gift from Neil to us all.

Im 52. I decided to make Rush "my band" in 9th grade. At 52 half of what Neil says goes over my head. And thats okay. He was a teacher and ive blamed many people for ripping off Rush, when Neil was simply repeating what he had learned. This is a tough one. Its not Farrah Fawcet or Andy Gibb. Its knowing ill never see them tour again. He'll never write or play again. A man who lost so much and rebuilt again. Never let us know how sick he was, so private, with good reason. This passing hit like a ton of bricks. "Suddenly you were gone.." Rest in peace Neil Peart.

I came late to the Rush Adoration Society. I'm a 70 year old child of the 60's and my thing has always been classic rock. I was never into heavy metal or progressive rock. I always like a couple of their songs like Spirit of Radio and Limelight but a couple of years ago I happened to catch a video and Neal caught my attention and drew me in. Rush was an acquired taste but once acquired I fell in love with the band, especially Neal. His interviews are professorial, philosophical, cerebral and professional. I've been to many concerts, Hendrix, The Doors, Let Zeppelin, The Who, Bowie,,,,,, etc. I have never seen The Stones, Beatles, Springsteen, Dead. Once upon a time I was in a record store thumbing thru albums and I stumblef upon "All the Worlds a Stage" First time I bought a record (music unheard) because of an awesome cover. That monster Slingerland kit lured me right in. One listen to 2112 live and I've been hooked since I never tried to copy Neil's drumming except for some backyard parties where I slaughtered the originals. But his playing nonetheless inspired me for decades on. His control of dynamics, His killer fills that always progressed from one to the next seamlessly. His ride/ Hi Hat interplay. His style is forever embedded in my percussion DNA. Along with John Bonham, Neil will be remembered for inspiring so many drummers to up their game. What a legacy.

In 1987 my father, a musician joined a cd club.. I was asked what cd I wanted as we were allowed to choose 10 for 1cent (remember those?) I chose Rush exit stage left. I worked my 9 year old fingers to the bone on my 4 piece used slingerland kit. 6 years later on February 24 I watched Candlebox open for Rush at the Atlanta Omni for the counter parts tour. I still remember it vividly to this day. I still play almost every day and still laugh at my attempts to emulate Neil when playing along with the Rush catalog. What a great example of professionalism and musicianship. Cheers to all of you fellow drummers out there.

I've never been one to be interested in celebrity gossip and such, but I still get teary eyed & weepy knowing that such beautiful music and insightful poetry will never be written ever again, however I am grateful to have been along for the ride.... Rest in peace professor....
