We could view his passing as a loss, and it hurts, but we can also view it as a tremendous gain for all he touched. He’s had an incredibly positive impact on my life and I never even met the guy!

I don't look at it as a loss - he was someone to look ip to and be inspired by - my life is richer for having experienced Rush, and Neil. What would be a loss is if one misses the lessons taught. We will miss him, and will not have anything new to ponder, other than what he left behind. That may be a loss, but it isn't one that isn't realized, so really what did we lose? Cherrish the memory, and learn from them. Then teach it to the next generation. That way, it can't be a loss. Rest in peace, Neil Peart. Thank you for what you have given. Say "Hi" to Buddy Rich and John Bonham for me.

There have been plenty of awesome musicians in the obituaries over the past 18-24 months (prince, Bowie, petty, EW&F Maurice, Grant Hart, et al). However, the passing of Neil hit me like nothing I expected. I hurt on the inside. I had no interest in doing much last weekend when I heard, etc. I think the delta here is that NP was such a sweet, committed, honest, smart, likeable, honorable work horse. He was so humble yet so brilliant. And Rush, almost like a relative that came to live in your parents home to ride it out, were part of my “household” for over 30 year, it cannot be helped to deeply lament this extraordinary man, and the poignancy of no longer having him on earth.... He was a real gift. Thank you for reading. Love,

I remember being in high school, grade 11, 1978. I took a class where we learned first about art and then about music in a class called Humanities. In the period before me, these boys were writing on a corner of the board "47 More Days Until RUSH," then "46 Days Until RUSH" and on and on. After a while I wanted to know who was writing that. It turned out to be 3 guys who were just ON FIRE about the band. I didn't know who Rush was, but I appreciated the fact that our elderly teacher let those guys write on her board every day and didn't erase it. I was just learning to play the drums. Eventually I discovered Rush, became a fan, listened intently to Neil's parts, and even majored in music at University later on (many lessons later). Alex, Geddy, and Neil were made for each other. Even today at age 57 I still hear new things in their music. They are a musical treasure because they were never afraid to expand the boundaries of music and to take both words and music to new places in our consciousness.

He is the most famous, but by no means the "most accomplished." Neil himself, I'm sure, would laugh at that notion. For example, Buddy Rich could play anything that Neil played and much much more. Vinnie Colayuta, same thing. Now, is Neil one of the best "artists" of all time? Yes. Factor in the parts he came up with and the lyrics and you have the total package, and that is even more impressive than "most accomplished" which suggests mere technical proficiency.

The world is less without Mr. Neil Peart in it. 100% in everything he accomplished in writing, traveling, lyrically or behind the kit. By looking at him here you know he showed up on his bike with little to no fan fair then quietly rode off to his next destination. For him and his inner circle to keep his illness from the world until two days after he'd passed in this age of social media and instant news is truly amazing. He even excelled at that.

Neil's intensity and high, high standards for everything are keys to him being known as one of the best drummers of all time. He is not full of himself. He is open to tips from others, he is always learning. Rush has been an important group for 40 years, with complex lyrics and music. How many other groups can say that? He is to rock drumming what Buddy Rich was to jazz drumming.

I was lucky enough to see Rush live eight times over the years; some Rush fans have seen them hundreds of times but those eight times for me were magical. Such an incredible experience to see three musicians in perfect sync play complicated set lists while having fun on stage (Alex!). Neil's books have been amazing as well, he is insightful, intelligent, and an excellent communicator via prose. At this point in time, although I miss Rush's music a great deal, it is comforting to a point to know Neil has "gone dark" on his personal web page and, I hope, is enjoying his time with his family and friends. Forty years of playing and touring the way he has, the way Rush has, is far more than most musicians could ever dream of accomplishing. Thanks to Neil for being an amazing human being and sharing his music, lyrics, and prose with us! :-)

Mr. Neil Peart: what an articulate, intelligent man. And blessed with an incredible amount of talent and a virtuoso at his crafts as a musician and an accomplished author. As a drummer (well..I try at it) I naturally hold him up as an example to aspire to for drumming but also admire him for his dedication to music, the band, and family. Thank you Neil. Best of luck in future endeavors and God Bless.

I always enjoy a Neil Peart interview, the intelligence, the desire to keep learning, to remain in touch with reality and how it spills into all aspects of the band. When you think you’ve learnt it all on a subject, go out and find someone who you can learn more from! He was renowned for not doing many interviews, but when he did they were always extremely interesting, insightful and inspirational! Go out leaving EVERYONE wanting more. Hugely missed!

Such a wonderful thing, to hear this phenomenally gifted musician speak of his inspiring other drummers, and then talk about going to a drum teacher, and saying "I'm a Butcher, you're a surgeon. I'm a pretty good butcher, but I want to be more of a surgeon." The whole video is worthwhile to hear him say that he's famous for beating on things with sticks! Fortune passes everywhere.

Already a rush fan after hearing the debut album I was eagerly awaiting their second release. I was absolutely horrified looking the ALBUM over that the drummer had been replaced!I thought this will be CRAP! Well once the needle hit the vinyl I quickly changed my mind. Then By Tor came on! OMG! WTF is this? Neil has been my hero ever since! Have all his books music etc. He is truly an extraordinary drummer and human being.Sad that more musicians and people in general do not have his work ethic and dedication to their craft.

+Del McTarsney I recall that exact horror!!! Man there was nothing like that vinyl. The album covers and sleeves and the few words spoken before or after a song. Those were the days my friend. I am not a musician at all. However, I am one hell of a spectator in the concert hall. A great work ethic is a must whatever one's profession. Peace.

I had pretty much the same experience as I purchased the first album from a bargain bin at the local record store and figured that the band just disappeared till I played a gig where the support band were playing covers from Fly By Night and Caress of Steel. I could not believe it was the same Rush. The drum fills in By Tor are among the best in Neils career. Rush are a truly unique band who were the sum of their parts and the parts were in each of them, skill, talent, creativity and integrity.

The first song I heard from them was limelight at 3am when I was half asleep. I think I was 12 then. I turn 41 in 2 weeks. I've been hooked sense the first listen.

THIS is why he is on a platform all his own amongst other drummers, and why RUSH lasted as long as they did. Always giving 100%. Never took the easy road. What a class act, truly will miss him 😔

RIP Neil. Best drummer in the world. I used to live in St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. where Neil lives for a time. Their live album was the first Rush album my brother Russell brought home. It took a while to get used to Geddy’s voice but I used to play his solo over and over

I just thought of something in examining the Professor’s last name: the first that caught my eye 👁 was ART- artist, artistic expression in both music and lyrical content. Second: PE as in physical education as in the Stamina it takes to play drums and in particular at a EXCEEDINGLY HIGH LEVEL!!! So we can deduce through his last name that we have an ARTIST in every sense of the word and Physical Education in terms of stamina and physicality to play at level that boggles the mind and soothes the Heart! Rest In Peace Professor there will never be another like you! Sincerely, Gary

Such a well spoken person. Neil has always kept a low profile throughout his career and it is so great to see him more accessible for fans to get an inside "view" of the drummer that has influenced countless generations. Great questions and topics. This was very enjoyable

He is totally right, they never put out a show that was 110%. And after touring so hard for so long..its amazing to have that longevity at such a high level. And all he wanted was to be a normal guy in the end. He went too soon, but also never seemed to waste a minute of his 67 years on earth
