Neil Robertson Shares His SECRETS For Long Potting Success!

I watch Neil Robertson play and I sometimes wonder why he doesn't win every tournament. He has every technique nailed and by far the best potter currently. Snooker is such a strange sport. So much more than potting balls. Loving these videos.

Because technique is overrated and there are bits of technique that is so hard to spot or impossible, Judd Trump always moves hid head, Alex Higgins twitched everything, Ronnie makes a circular motion with his cue almost like a piston on a crank shaft, Stephen Hendry in his prime didn't actually cue straight, if you watch you'll see a slight curve in his cueing. They tested Steve Davis and the part of the ball he thinks is the centre isn't the centre, so he played every shot almost with some trace of unknown side and won 6 world titles with it. Ray Reardons cue arm stuck out like a chicken wing.

@Julien Ghaddar When mercury aligns opposite uranus or mars, for a week from10am thru to 10pm earth time it's impossible for anyone to cue straight, which makes long-pots a non-option. Therefore only good chess players with cunning strategies can win at snooker during this period.

Awesome! The insight into the eye pattern of each is enlightening. As a pool player in the USA, my earliest success came object ball last, as Willie Mosconi prescribed. Then I studied Willie Hoppe and he taught cue ball last. I made the switch and feel like I can be more accurate by final focus on the strike on the white. My point of aim has evolved to the point on the back side of the cue ball. That along with Barry Stark and now Stephen giving terrific insight into their methods is making it fun.

It's amazing the differences in what people consider the proper way. Look at cue ball or object ball when striking? Cue parallel or slightly raised, can you argue against Ronnie!? Sight under dominant eye, Neil very obviously sighting under his right eye, or just in centre? Pause at back swing or not, Mark Allen? Pause at cue ball before back swing or not? Bridge hand arm totally straight or slightly bent? etc etc! This game is so hard. Been playing for over 40 years, highest break 38, average break 8!!!!!! lol

Marvellous channel - thank you. I had not previously noticed that Neil is cross-dominant. He cues with his left hand but sights with his right eye. This is especially clear at the start of the video before he sinks the long red. Ronnie is the same, using his left eye for sighting when playing right-handed (perhaps this helps him when playing left-handed). Would Stephen consider presenting a video on this, commenting in particular on how players compensate for it in their body positioning and cue action? Best wishes.

One of the best long potters in the game. Technique is a great deal of how you play, but i had stigmatism in left eye and thst made me cue the ball "off center" as i was right eye dominant, but learned to over come it.

when i used to play, i thought my game didnt progress as i couldnt get used to looking at the object ball. but stephen is a cue ball looker, so i guess there's no right or wrong. i was probably just crap, lol

I don't know why but, in my head, it always made sense to look at the cueball as that is what you are hitting, if you lined it all up right then you shouldn't need to look at the object ball.

I think a beginner may be taught to look at the cue ball fist, until you have a more than comfortable cue action and you know you're striking it in the centre every time, then you can begin looking at the object ball on your pots

I feel better control of the cue ball after making the switch from object ball to cue ball on strike. It took a leap of faith at first. Now it's natural. The camera work in current events gives occasional look at the eye pattern of the various players. I thought I noticed what Stephen describes in several top players.

The important bit is keeping your head still and watching the cue ball move and hit the object ball. And then while still keeping your head motionless watch the object ball to the pocket. Notice it go in, wide left, wide right, left side of the pocket, right side of the pocket. This creates the feedback loop in your brain to learn your potting angles

It’s funny, I’ve tried so hard to go cue ball cue ball, object ball on strike and cannot pot a thing. I naturally taught my self, stance cue action is all self taught, and I always glance at the object ball and then cue ball on strike. Worked for me for many years and I’ve played to a -21 handicap in leagues and had century breaks before! My advice for anyone playing is teach yourself! KZbin is the best place to learn! Barry Stark is very good, but there’s loads of videos out there. I went from knocking in 16/17 breaks regularly to 40/50’s every night. Work on your long game and your safety because that’s what wins you matches. The rest, like break building and cue ball control comes with constant practice.

I agree with you on the safety aspect. I played against a guy who was easily a worse potter than I, but he started well, and simply potted red, colour, then safety. I was stuck in a snooker so often that I never got a look in. Had he tried to pot more than 2 balls in a row, I likely would've beaten him. His tactics were brilliant. I learned a lot from that match. ✌️🇦🇺

I believe like you said what works for you is best.When i was a century breaker many moons ago in my teens the reason my coach said your eyes should be on the point of contact on the object was this.......he gave the dart player as the example when they line up to throw the dart their eyes are fully focused on the target, if u say a dart player was aiming and lined up for treble 20 and as his arm went back to complete the throw he was looking at the dart or another part of the board the wrong signal is sent to the brain thus extremly effecting the level of hitting the intended target.

Interesting on looking at object or white on strike. I always looked at white but tried to move to looking at object after listening to Parrott and various others years ago, and lost the instinctiveness. Been trying to get it back ever since. I'm gonna go back to the old looking at white then split second after object ball and pocket, will need to really practice it back in. There's big risks in messing with fundamental parts of your action.

hi thomstunes6485...... so text books say hitting the chest on delivery is the best way to play.The man behind ronnies success MR Dell hill teaches the drive.He claims theres two ways of cuing down to up which is pecking and hitting the chest, driving is up to down and through past the chest.Ronnie displays driving the best and if u watch Stephen lee he is also a great driver of the cue ball

Well amateurs practice a shot until they make the shot. Pros practice that shot until they cannot miss. They're definitely in another league.

Had a little table at home, took me months to be able to clear up the colours, and I was inconsistent, some days I could do it, others it was impossible. The short spells when everything went in felt great, just wish I could do that all the time.

I'd bet that if you could place the cueball (by hand) into the best place to pot the ball, you'd do OK. They're just able to do that with their shot. Only one shot out of 10 is a "tester", once they've begun the break.

@@castleanthrax1833 Yes, cue ball control is the biggest part of the game, but I also struggle with aiming, that they they do so easily. Straight pots were easy for me, but judging the angle never came naturally, however hard I tried. Using side is like voodoo.

@@sharpvidtube A tip for judging the angle, is to line up two balls so as to make a "plant" that would pot the ball closest to the pocket if you hit the other ball. Then remove the other ball, and all you have to do, is to hit the cueball so it would hit the object ball in exactly the same place. The point where the two balls collide is the point that you should be aiming at. I usually imagine my cuetip hitting the point where the two balls collide, and hopefully they do. Anyway I just thought I'd let you know that tip that I use. ✌️
