I concur with your last statement. Its important to respect the creatures we want to photograph. Ultimately, if we can't do things with disturbing the natural habitat, and heaven forbid that there are photographers who would put insects in fridges just so they can take photos, its immoral

Thank you for a great video, especially in regards to your final segment on ethics. It drives me nuts when people have animals in studios, move them around for a picture, or just show them general disrespect. It sometimes feels like people just don’t care. It’s refreshing to see other people who want to share the wonders of small creatures while treating them as real individuals that matter and have emotions.

Well, I'm three minutes into the video too, and I'm debating weather I should continue watching or not, as I suspect this will be a waste of time. I love your video and most of the instruction throughout. In particular, the ending. This is where you addressed the macro world and surrounding environment. Tiny critters deserve to live in peace just as much as any human. Okay, let me get back to on that human part later. As I was attempting to say, I was taught photography by my grandpa (nearly 60 yrs in the biz, sshhh!), and he had one very important point. While it addresses, fashion, portrait, model, glamour, etc. it also serves well here. His point: If something's in your way, MOVE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, not the model or your props! Hope to see more. I especially like the last comment about ethic and respecting environment...in so many other intros/tutorials/guides people say that spray bottle of water is essential, same for "clearing surrounding" with scissors, things which I never fully agreed...will the picture be more stunning, many times yes, but in the end it is most important to not harm the subject and its habitat. IMHO macro as well as any other kind of wildlife photographers should follow the rule of minimal to possibly no impact. Many times grass blades, small branches etc. can be gently bent out of frame with a little bit of effort and if they can't then one should change their own position, try different framing or angle...if that's not possible, well world will not end and there might be many more better occasions to take a shot in few minutes or next time...and if someone really need the droplets on the spiders, lizard or frog...get up earlier, the light will also be better ;)
@neilfisher6 жыл бұрын
Many thanks @Ars3nicGinger 👍 It's really nice the hear that some many others share the same line of thinking - hope as the issue is talked about more openly, it will become less of a problem. 😃😃😃

I have sprayed geckos many a times for a better picture. I've done most my work in desserts and I can promise you, any lizard I have done it on has only been thankful to get some extra water. (Just make sure it isn't chlorinated). If a single straw of grass in the way, I can also promise you, moving your entire body to a new position (especially if you are laying flat, as you often need to) will only disturb the micro habitat more than just pulling out that one straw. Saying that you shouldn't touch the environment, put instead just move yourself and stop being lazy is all fine and dandy, but you also have to think for a bit and consider if it really makes sense.

Wow, you covered nearly everything I could think of! I had been wondering about ethics when I was watching, and wondered how much of an issue it was. I'm glad this is a thing people take seriously. Being able to highlight nature, but destroy a creatures habitat in the process, is not the kind of approach I wish to take. I am interested to know, you mentioned the downsides to extension tubes, but did you cover diopters (maybe I missed it)? I plan on using both, since I can't really afford good glass. I'd be interested to see some more content about low cost/no cost alternatives, like the cereal box setup you showed.

Thanks @Sawta 👍 Happy to hear that you found it helpful and share the same respect for tiny macro subjects. Regardless whether you're adding extension tubes or diopters, or both, to a non-macro, you'll not likely end up with a magnification anywhere near 1:1. Adding multiple extension tubes reduces light quite significantly and a diopter alone really doesn't change magnification all that much.

Here it became my favorite macro video because of soooo many good reasons. Environment, Music, Videos, Macro Pics, Points talked, and a humanity ending. Can't ask anything more from you buddy 🙂. I myself love macro photography as I believe it's the most underrated area to be shown out.

I apreciate that you talk about the ethic. I think the respect for the subject or for the context is the first thing to consider. Great video! :)

Many thanks @Mihai Vale 👍 It's unfortunate that the matter of ethics needs to be mentioned at all, but unfortunately there are still some who don't share the same respect for living macro subjects.

Love your teaching style and thoughts on ethics. Your presentation is artful and at the same time technical - very well done. I'm a beginner in macro photography, truly inspired :-)

Thanks @Pinn Sinratchatanan 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍 However, I think you've fallen victim to KZbin's recent decision to remove the dislike counter from all videos - that said, there are certainly a few individuals who have found something in this video to "dislike".

Great tutorial! Really wish I’d seen this before getting my telephoto “macro” lens with 95cm focus distance and 1:2 magnification 😟 still - at least I have a usable telephoto I suppose whilst I get used to some close up shots 😅 great tips in this video!

Excuse me. Is "diffuse" pronounced "dai-fuse" or "dee-fuse"? Sincerely, A non-native speaker.

@Bao Doan my girlfriend made fun of me immediately upon hearing how I pronounced it. Though a few close friends pronounce it the same way ... it could be an East Coast versus West Coast ... Canada thing? It's pronounced properly as: dif·fuse

This is the best video I've ever seen on KZbin! I've only watched this video for 2 minutes and I already know you're a fantastic KZbinr- your speaking speed is just right, you get straight to the point, and your video is extremely visually pleasing! Well done!
