When the pressure gets too low on your airbrakes (usually around 20-40 psi depending on the vehicle), your brake interlock system on the braking system will, as the name says, lock. Your vehicle will stop violently and abruptly, depending on how fast you're driving. That's why you came to a stop so quickly; so, TLDR, yes, you need the pressure tank.

Next time, don't load the race car into the truck. Just make a run for it in the empty truck and when everyone is chasing the truck the race car drives off in the other direction.
