I think that games like God of war, ninja gaiden or devil may cry could be more like the Evolution of the genre rather than Shenmue or Yakuza. Shenmue and Yakuza has indeed action and fights against several enemies but that's not the core mechanics of the game, but psx God of war or the Xbox Ninja Gaiden has this kind of fights as it's main game system.

Really love 2d games. Especially if they are flashy like cps2 types.... This though looks like something a megadrive or other 16bit machine could do most of...bar that whale or helicopter etc and a few scrolling effects.. (or at least a cut down port on a special cartridge or something) It looks very repetitive too. So on this one... I gotta say- on first impressions it doesn't really make me wanna spend time on it. Looks original too which is unique on this genre. Edit. Would be more suited on a neogeo as opposed to megasnes!

Nekketsu Oyako was a great yet obscure 2.5D beat em up, with a fantastic level design and soundtrack. The Sega Saturn was such an amazing console, it was much superior to the N64 and even superior to psx in a few aspects, for example, FPS tend to be better on Saturn than on psx or n64. Considering it was not succesfull in the west, the Saturn sold much better than the N64 in Japan. * note: Saturn came out 2 weeks earlier than the psx (in Japan)

I feel like the beat'em up genre was on the decline ever since Streetfighter II. With arcade machines, pvp fighting games ate up quarters a heck of a lot faster than coop games. Even if the cabinet technically only supported two players, you'd typically have a much larger number of players waiting their turn, so a lot more quarters to eat up before the players had had enough. Coop games could ramp up the difficulty, but it felt a lot more frustrating to only get a minute or two of gameplay because the CPU opponents were unfairly tough, than it was to lose to a human opponent who didn't have an unfair advantage. Somehow the shooter genre managed to cling on through this era, but I feel like the beat'em up was too similar to the PvP fighting game. If you had the artists and coders suitable for making a beat'em up, you'd direct them to try and make a more profitable fighting game instead. On the console side of things, I think Mario 64 really became what everyone chased after. It's really what drove the feeling that everything now had to be 3D. But developers were struggling with camera control. Having more than one player would make it even more of a headache. So coop was more of a headache to try and develop, so ... sigh...
@shiningphantasy13932 жыл бұрын
Sometime a year or two after Final Fight the arcade beat 'em ups became like "How much mayhem can we cram onto the screen at once?" and the genre kind of burned itself out with over-saturation and excessive repetition. That in combination with the rise of the prioritized one on one fighting game pretty much shifted developers away from the genre for the most part. The one on one fighting game had skill development and progression involved and that was a big advantage, even if that genre became over-saturated over time also.

Love Tecnosoft; this one looks like a run of the mill variety Neo-Geo game; based on the pros and cons I'd choose the Saturn version due to the enhanced OST. I can understand why the game remained in Japan; it would not have moved the needle at all in the USA during the mid-nineties and would have found itself in the bargain bin section before very long. Sony was discouraging 2D games to even be released in the USA for the Playstation for the first year, although they still filtered through and made it out.

Art style isn't directly related to art scale, the sprites may look like something seen on the SNES but their size and number of frames are more similar to the quality scale of something like Capcom's arcade brawlers Ie. tons of memory chips. You'd have to seriously reduce the size of all the art and cut a lot of frames to fit this on SNES/GEN, I was surprised how well Captain Commando turned out on SNES in hindsight. CD game storage size is a funny matter, although it can increase the number of levels possible it can't increase the amount of video memory on the platform. This is kind of why SCD games often didn't excel much more graphically than Genesis counterparts. Only exception to that was the SS RAM cart approach. Best thing Nekketsu Oyako might have done was add some different sprites to swap between in the home ports even if they couldn't all be on screen at the same time. Definitely on the border of tech transition though in release timing, this kind of game would see a lot of graphical evolution in that time period when you look where it ended up later like Capcom's D&D games. Yeah a real shame all that brawler goodness didn't come out in NA or develop more as a genre viable more in the present.
@SegaLordX2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we will need to simply disagree, then. In no way does this game even remotely approach the quality of animation or number of sprites on screen of Capcom's arcade titles. Yes, the sprites are a bit larger than what we typically saw on the SNES/Genesis, but let's not get carried away here. This is far closer to a 16-bit experience than one of Capcom's efforts on the CPS line.
@loganjorgensen2 жыл бұрын

When I first played this game years ago the graphics and the way the characters are animated actually reminded me of games made on certain arcade boards like what Taito used instead of snes and genesis. guess that silliness the game has along with being a brawler since I was looking for more to play on Saturn is why I didn't mind playing it even though it's not using the consoles power to its advantage. At the same time I remember thinking back in the Saturn era "where are the graphically enhanced versions of Streets of Rage 1-3 along with where is SoR 4?" I really would have been playing Saturn even more than what I was already doing if I could have played a better looking, sounding and animated, sounding version of SoR2 since that game is what kept me and my friend up so many nights since the game was just that good. Still hurt the Saturn didn't get ports of Sega's own arcade brawlers like both Golden Axe games, Alien Storm and Arabian Fight and Capcom also left a number of their brawlers off the system. Sailor Moon also didn't make it to Saturn and we got that garbage fighting game for her instead which was a stain on Saturn and PS1. >_>

It's like a SNES game ported straight to a 32-bit machine.

The game has special moves which aren't included in the manual and took me several hours of playing to document them. I suspect the developers added moves and the people who made the manual copied the moveset from the PSX version.

I wonder if the somewhat basic visuals could be attributed to the fact that this game was a very early release on both the Playstation and saturn. Also I wonder if an arcade version was ever in development.

Nice. My wife’s son is coming to visit this weekend. My wife only allows me to play games when he is around. I am going to unplug his computers video card so he will have to play hot blooded family instead of fortenite.

@@agamemnon8163 oh yeah that's true, but at least you'd be able to game whenever you like. Better yet, you can find a new wife after your divorce who enjoys gaming as much as you do and you can forget about your ex-wife and her son. ☺️
