A lot of people think this song is about her warning her past self about how boys will break you. I think this song is about a mother warning her child (her sparrow) about how hard life is and telling her to be careful, telling her it's harder than you think. Then the sparrow doesn't listen and life takes them away...

I agree. Every bird needs to learn to fly. leaving the nest, so to speak. As a parent, we too need to learn how to let our fledglings fly.

Nice. I read somewhere that Neko ran away from home at 15? and ended up in Vancouver, BC. She played drums in a all girl punk band etc, IMO this particular song echoes similar themes to other songs she has created. There is that longing, some sorrow and a little regret lurking in between the lines. Though those last few images of the grown woman suggests she is reminiscing. Case is fantastic, far too creative/intelligent for most.

the sparrow is her pain. She had been forwarned. And had not listened. Sometimes the pain is intentional, and it is to be experienced, for ourselves.

Thanks for Neko Case and company for keeping our orange economy and indie musicians driven music industry alive. You are such a breath of fresh air against the toxicity of algorithmic written rock.

So grateful we have a modern canta autor with the gravitas and levitas to show the reflective colours of personal emotions.

This is such a sad song if you put it in a certain perspective. A few points are, The sparrow that sang would be gone FOREVER! And its bones would turn to dust eventually.

I am not sure that the "real" meaning of this song is the point - all I know is that when I hear it, it stops me in my tracks and makes me miss my dad, (who passed from Covid 12/20) in a way that hurts like nothing I've ever even considered, but also makes me grateful for the pain.

I heard this song years ago, and at the time, after it had ended, turned, and looked at my cat, who, I had for four years, prior. He ended up living another ten years, but In that moment, after hearing this song, I knew he would die, and that I would have to not only have the deed done, but bury him, thereafter. I don't think I looked at him the same. Makes me wonder if pets look at us, in the same way.

Maybe sparrow you should wait The hawks alight till morning You'll never pass beyond the gate If you don't hear my warning Notes are hung so effortless With the rise and fall of sparrow's breast It's a drowning dive and back to the La di da di da di da La di da di da di da Oh my sparrow it's too late Your body limp beneath my feet Your dusty eyes cold as clay You didn't hear my warning Maybe sparrow it's too late Moonlight glanced off metal wings In a thunderstorm above the clouds The engine hums a sparrow's phrase For those who cannot hear the words For those who cannot hear the words For those who will not hear the words La di da di da di da La di da di da di da Maybe sparrow Maybe sparrow Maybe sparrow Source: Musixmatch

I’m just confused because the lyrics specify that the bird of prey is a hawk. It’s still a suuuuper pretty animation, though, and a beautiful song.
