I also do art like this, so I'll explain the best I can. The colors aren't random, just contrasting. When you layer colors that are far away from each other on the color wheel, they of course create a darker color. This can be super helpful for shading. For example, I recently drew Gon Freecss with colored pencils, and for his hair I started with green, layered on some red to make the almost black part darker, and added more green and a bit of gray on top to make sure that green stayed the dominant color. Using black to shade doesn't usually work out, and can end up making the picture almost dirty looking. Black also overpowers all the other colors, so I tend to avoid black unless I'm mixing it with other colors when I'm painting. It just doesn't work with colored pencils and markers all that well. Not sure if you wanted that whole explanation, but I gave it anyway lol ✌️
