This is a legendary performance, a real jewel. Breathtaking. It is amazing to know that he was only 21 at the time of this performance. It brought tears to my eyes - a true musical treasure.

Wonderful!! It is really incredible that he already had every aspect of a consumate master even at that young age. I think this comes from a Swiss TV concert performance from 1965. He was only 21 at the time!! Nelson Freire recorded this work again latter and it was included in the volume dedicated to him of the Phillips 'Great Pianists of the 20th Century' and that recording is arguably the finest one to be found anywhere of this piece.

Nelson's playing is unique. During his 20's he seemed a more passionate interpreter although... but his command of the piano and of himself is masterfull, Thank you for posting!

There are so many awkward passages in this piece that are really difficult to make into listenable music, but Freire makes them very listenable indeed. Also, his glissandos are amazing. I'm surprised he didn't cut his hand because there were so many of them. He obviously knows something about how to do them with ease and safety.

I had the whole recital and a LOT of other stuff by Freire, but I lost my hard drive once and everything with it. I randomly saved this somewhere on a separate dvd. The Rachmaninoff is from a diffirent recital I believe, like the Moszkowski. He wears a white bow tie and a darker suit there.

Among Brazilians, he competes with Arthur Moreira Lima and Giomar Novaes Giomar Novaes was the promoter of Brazilian music around the world. Without her, Villa Lobos wouldn't be half of what it is outside of Brazil Arthur Moreira Lima was second in the 1965 chopin contest, losing only to Martha Argerich

Why?
@adriancook70783 жыл бұрын
In the beginning I thought this is better than the Rubinstein and then it suddenly dawned on me there is no colour. The actual texture of the sound doesn't change. With Rubinstein it is not just dynamics but the actual sound of the piano, the actual texture of the dynamics changes. You actually hear different colours. I think he is the only one who can do that. Of course there is always Dinu Lipatti.
