Nelson Irrigation F200 Big Gun sprinkler

I had the perfect opportunity this afternoon to capture some decent footage of this beast of a Nelson Irrigation F200 Big Gun, watering a large corner of a cornfield where the nearby center pivots aren't able to cover. Unfortunately, the adjacent road traffic was a bit more excessive than I had hoped for at the time when I recorded these video clips, though I feel that despite the occasional passing vehicle, everything still turned out fairly well in the end.
This is Nelson Irrigation's largest, dedicated full circle Big Gun sprinkler in their 200 Series product line - the F200. This particular sprinkler has a 1.6" taper bore main nozzle installed, along with a smaller (3/8") secondary nozzle located at the base of the elbow that adds extra coverage up close to the sprinkler. Both nozzles have a combined flow rate of approximately 800 GPM at 100 PSI, with an average range of coverage in this particular application of about 240 feet under average weather conditions with minimal wind interference. If not for the light wind we were experiencing at the time thar this video was recorded, it would be capable of throwing out to a maximum of around 260 feet.

Yes these are the big boys! Nelson’s biggest gun meant for high volume applications. These go from 250-1250gpm depending on pump and nozzle size but this is irrigating quite a large area these get like 200-250feet diameter

Thes big guys are not to be taken lightly. With the correct amount of pressure and flow going to them they get quite an amazing distance. I've watched many p200s operate but if they're getting a good source of water they are amazing and relaxing to watch. And it's cool to see them reverse if the brake isn't set right they just whip back around so fast.

Nelson big guns! Good manufacturing and planning go into these and if serviced regularly can last a long time. I'd so love to have one like this for myself and a big yard so i can make videos of it watering it! I assume this F200 is fairly new considering it is still silver in color and not brown from the rust.. Also what i find interesting is it looks so similar to a P200 but without the reverse mechanism or stops.

I’m not far from MI and there is the complete opposite from IN. I seen a lot of solid sets and travelers with p200/sr200/etc. a LOT more than in Indiana. However I do know where a f150( not the truck lol) is mounted on a solid set to catch where a pivot can’t reach.

Seems very similar to the p200 just without the reverse arm, that has some crazy range! You would need a crazy large pump to run one of these like that!!!

You are correct about their similarities; both the P200 and F200 Big Guns were originally built using the same basic design. There were really only a few major parts differences between the two while the P200 was still in production; mostly with the simple addition of the reversing lever, its linkages, the engagement/disengagement stops, and a larger diameter bearing housing cover to attach the two stops for part-circle operation. It actually wasn't even all that long ago (within the last decade, IIRC) that Nelson updated the F200's casting molds, to remove the extra material where the lever engagement yoke was once mounted on top of the main elbow, along with the cast bump stops for the reverse lever that were once a part of the drive arm's bearing housing. And yes, these big guys do require a very large pump to keep up with their large appetite for water! This F200 is fed by a 10" well with a 125 horsepower electric motor, which also supplies water to two other guns (SR200s) as well as four center pivots. The pump is only able to run one of the three guns at a time, or up to two of the center pivots simultaneously since they don't require as much output pressure from the pump as the guns do.

There are quite a few variables in determining how large a pump would need to be in order to provide ample supply to run a Big Gun (or really any type of sprinkler system for that matter). Some of those variables include: how deep the well is, the distance between the well and where you plan to install the sprinkler, and how much water you want to apply at a time with the sprinkler. In my experience a SR75 generally seems to work the best using a 0.6" nozzle with approximately 65 PSI at the gun for part-circle applications, which requires around 80 GPM at that given pressure. For example, your pump would need to have at least a 5 horsepower motor to give you an output of roughly 80-90 PSI at the well to compensate for pressure losses that occur in the run of pipe between the well and your sprinkler. Assuming that the distance between both points isn't extremely long and a pipe size of at least 3" is used to supply water to the sprinkler, that should give you right around 65-70 PSI at the sprinkler's nozzle with approximately 80 GPM as required for a 0.6" nozzle size. Again, there are many variables to be accounted for in your specific situation to ultimately determine what size pump you will need to run a SR75 Big Gun at its optimal performance. A local well driller should be able to help you figure out exactly what you need to meet the requirements of whichever nozzle size works the best for your application. I see a lot of travelers where i live with P200's mounted on them (the old style "fast reversing" and the pumps they use to run them are huge! Like take the one i live by for example, its powered by a diesel engine that turns a pump, that runs 2 center pivots. The hoses they have on the traveler's spool is probably a 2 " (i think?) that hooks up to the pump's output and boy do they shoot out some water! I just live in a regular neighborhood with city water (thats what my parents have) and i have videos of impacts and etc that i currently own. But as Ian said you gotta have the flow and the pressure to run a big run properly, as my hookup at my parents would just cause it to make puddles in the yard. lol.

They can under ideal conditions (i.e. virtually no wind) with a 1.9" taper bore nozzle, which is the largest nozzle size that Nelson offers for the 200 Series Big Guns. It takes a massive water supply that's capable of delivering nearly 1200 gallons per minute at around 120 PSI to achieve the full 300ft radius though.

It mostly depends on what the pump (and piping) is capable of supplying to the system that determines how many are able to run simultaneously without significant performance loss. This particular setup could probably run two guns at once fairly well when the pump is running at full capacity, however it usually isn't feasible to run more than one at a time due to the different watering needs of the areas covered by each sprinkler. In this case it's much easier to turn one on at a time and let it run for however long it needs to in order to apply the proper amount of water for the specific area it covers. It would definitely be interesting to see at least two of them running together with as much pressure as this one has!

No - each one of these guns is set up to flow the same amount of water as any given one of the three larger pivots in those fields. With that said, it might be possible to run the little 2-span pivot simultaneously with one of these Big Guns, though I'm sure the gun's performance would suffer quite a bit depending on what kind of flow rate the small pivot is nozzled for.
