One criticism of your excellent docu. You could have mentioned Mandela's white ancestry through his GRIQUA /COLOURED grandmother ! The Griqua people were predominantly KHOI , but racially intermixed with Cape slaves and whites !

They failed to mention where Mandela's true greatness came from . His GRIQUA /COLOURED grandmother ! Her mixed bloodline was predominantly KHOI , mixed with Malaysian and African slaves , and also whites . This mixed race ancestry would technically make him a coloured !

Its too easy to write everything to imperialism. But reality is the major dog is not France, English or whatever its your own corruption. I know it hurts but thats the way it is. With proper government one can overcome everything. Even the shit stains left by imprerialism. But it all starts with those that govern. If they are corrupted and greedy pigs you will never get better and just keep crying about the imperialism excuse over and over again.

Thank you for this documentary, very well researched and narrated in accordance with chronological events. President Mandela truly was remarkable. As a 30 year old South African woman, as I've grown up, I've grown into uncharted territory and events in South Africa like most of my generation. We now are without electricity for atleast 12 hours of every day, where sometimes these scheduled power cuts result in power outages due to degenerate infrastructure and cable theft. Crime is at it's worth, poverty has no race or face and our healthcare systems are terrible. Cry the beloved country.....

A beautiful narration of triumphant of the forces of good over forces of evil, an unwavering personal sacrifice for others over a lengthy period of time. The story that unfortunately ended with the sad outcome that is greed and betrayal of the great leadership well displayed on the world stage. A beautiful dream of equality and prosperity for all that ended with the ignorant and the greedy ascending to positions of power to capture the moments for self enrichment. Such is the sad story of the Republic of South Africa 🇿🇦. A Republic plagued by rampant government corruption, high crime rates, high economic disinvestments, grey listings by international financial institutions, high unemployment rates, dysfunctional public service institutions; the one we see today is definitely NOT the South Africa that Nelson Mandela would be proud of. Nelson Mandela, the legend who was ultimately betrayed by his own comrades. SAD 😥😔!

I truly love how well you've described Mr. Nelson Mandela like the way that you did. He's one of another well poised and well educated Black Leaders of our time that had too come through so much animosity himself as peaceful as he was. It's soo very sad to see that when it comes to "Black America" the odds seem to be stacked against us in trying to find out who we REALLY are as a people and as a culture who've fought and struggled through much terrain. And have also triumphed over many obstacles that were in our own paths. Although some things have changed for the black community, however we still are in need of where we're now headed for in the future. Keep your head up Black America!!!

Dear person if only you knew the real truth of what was really going on ,who was behind it who were and still is,is the real forefathers of apartheid who also created the ANC certainly not Sol Plaaijies he was only the interpreter for the British could have even been ( Cecil John Rhodes) during the late 1800's when South Africa was under full control of the British all happend after they defeated the Zulus and killed off the boer's wives and children, they even implemented the Dom pass and put curfews on the mine workers that worked in the mines that they have stollen . Mr Nelson Mandela was only a pawn in their sick game. Nelson Mandela rainbow nation plan would have worked because during Mandel's time in office , people started to trust one another ,the magic was there ,it showed during the 2010 soccer game ,how we could have been ,but from Mbeki and afterwards everything is based on revenge on people who had nothing to do with the law making of the country ,something that does puzzles me still today ,why dit the apartheid government became MEC's in Mandela's cabinet 🤔if they were suppose to be the law makers of apartheid ,it never made sense to me.

Contrary to common believe he spent 18 of the 27 years in the prison on Robben Island. The last 8 or so years he was in Polsmore on the mainland where it was more like being under house arrest. This is African black people land and its being taken away by white people and all he wants is fair treatment for his black people as his people are forced to live in slums. Even Joe Biden in 80's condemn and denounce George Schultz then foreign minister in senator hearing say South Africa is black people's land and equal rights need to be treated to all black people in education and jobs. Yes violence is violence but if its original your land for hundreds of years and your land bein robbed away I don't see how people cannot react with violence. Most disappointing for me at age 65 is that we as South Africa had too little of his time as leader, could have been so much further down the road of racial recovery at the time he too needed a peaceful retirement. I’d swap the years of disaster Botha any day to have had Mandela lead the country. I regret Mandela not having done enough to eliminate Zuma from political power during the arms debacle. Just such a pity my home country has fallen into failure for actions of the party he loved, ANC needs to follow the Nats into ruin so that SA can start to rebuild.

Your comments are very enlightening! From my perspective as a non-African (Irish living in France) few countries have been lucky enough to have a leader as spectacularly humane and inspiring as Mandela. I think he would be incredibly proud today of his country's actions in trying to hold Israel to account for the injustices committed against the Palestinians. Let's hope his truth and reconciliation model is put to good use once Netanyahu withdraws from Gaza and the Palestinians receive the statehood and civil rights they have long been denied. I was especially fascinated to learn that Mandela was not so keen on Mbeki but favoured Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa... evidently he was always thinking ahead while prioritising not just his own country's but the world's well-being. Such an inspiration.

I'm currently half way through Mandela's book and glad to have watched this. The documentary doesn't touch a lot on the actual happenings i.e injustices or even give clear examples of it during the apartheid era, but its still quite informative. Also, this channel is pretty awesome on details and I've been camping here, as well as recommending it to my friends.

Make videos on the people they murdered. Like Bantu Steve Biko, Chris Hani. the ones they killed were the ones they were afraid of. they kept mandela because he didn't have as much influence as a leader but turning him into a martyr would have ended the wealth parade sooners. Apartheid was never about race. it was about taking everything away from South africans. the race part was to get the civilians to agree. while they enjoy segregated beaches, you and your German friends are commandeering entire eco-systems of game and land. stealing RAW minerals whole. literally carrying raw gold out the country. commandeering entire mountains full of platinum. people own mountains in this country. Not to mention the farms and land that was freely given after black people were forcibly removed from their lands. It was never about Race

When he was taken from Robben island to Pollsmoor prison they were hoping that he was going soften but he remain adament that he would never renounce violance until apartheid came to an end. It's interesting to hear an 'outsider' account of Nelson Mandela and South Africa's recent history for a change. Mandela is certainly one of very few political figures of this country I would have been keen to meet. While I admittedly despise the corrupt remains of the ANC that rules us now...as with most revolutions in history, violent or not, the remedy became the new disease. Being born in 1995 though, I sadly can only have a second hand perspective of the early stages of our democracy - I don't even recall having an established race consciousness or perception of the fractious foundations of our society until the end of primary school and into high school. Despite being descended directly from British colonial and Afrikaner Boer roots, racial prejudices didn't really feature in my youth; as my mother and her siblings were born and raised in Jamaica, where they grew up playing and going to school with children of colour, that likely accounts for that sense of equality and a less...tense attitude towards race (An attitude which can get one into trouble in this subjectively politically correct age). But I dearly hope that South Africa can, independent of the influence of the major powers of the world stage, pull itself out of the present stagnation and emerge as something uniquely beautiful in the painful history of the world.

I agree with many of tge comments relative to the authenticity, depth & breath of this documentary. I stumbled upon this site looking for 1:02:22 for information relative to Mandela's reception by the US, in the early 90s. I read the Long Walk To Freedom in late 1994 in preparing to move to RSA for my job. It was an excellent source in helping me to understand So Africa apartheid... and realizing it was "US Jun Crow, segregation,.."! The documentary was well researched with what I lived and researched. Exceptionally well done and I hope you will build on this documentary with a Part 2, 3, ... delving mire into the many back stories. And other South Africans who fault for freedom.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 and Thank you

Nelson Mandela was a great leader, undoubtedly, and a great peace maker but he was also not a saint by any means. He and his group, even his wife, were involved in multiple episodes of human torture, unjustified killings, and his political handling of post-apartheid South Africa could have been done better in terms of economics (SA remains the most economically unequal country on Earth), industry and especially the AIDS crisis. And it sadly looks like his successors in the ANC party are not about or willing to improve things in the country as racial and ethnic unity have been plummeting post-apartheid.

Good pronunciation of African names. But not so good with Afrikaans names. Malan has emphasis on second syllable. I was in high school when the Rivonia trial took place. The ANC was bombing police stations and railway stations. Mandela and his gang of ten were found to be in possession of at least hundreds of automatic rifles and tons of ammunition and military class of explosives and detonators. They used to blow down high voltage power lines. I remember that clearly. He was trained in eastern Europe which was firmly communist at that time. He admitted to most of the terrorism charges laid against him. He and his "comrades" as they called themselves. They narrowly missed the gallows. The senior Judge gave them life imprisonment instead. There used to be a book on KZbin written by one of the Rivonia trial judges, which lasted about 8 months. But it seems to have disappeared. It detailed how the Security Police tracked the Mandela gang down and caught them red handed at their hideout on a luxury farm at Rivonia, a suburb of Johannesburg. He deserved to go for Life imprisonment. People of all races died in their terrorist attacks. Erich age 75, now living in New Zealand.

It's so weird that SA had segregation through to the 1990s and are still reeling from being decades behind other countries who were already slow with ending segregation in the 1960s. SA seems to need more opportunities in general and less corruption, in that way when there's plenty then there's plenty for many vs the cut throat everyone out for themselves hard times that's happening currently. The slums are no way to live regardless of race or creed, yet so many ppl in the comments here still are butt hurt and bent over racism or rather haven't yet come to terms with it being the problem, regardless of which way it goes hatred is a cancer that destroys everything if allowed to fester and racism is a cancer that destroys and distorts your minds. I really worry about the future of SA, pls no race wars - our troops are still messed up from 9/11 wars. Sincerely, 🇨🇦

I don’t believe in colonization in modern times, however the times were much different in the past. I also don’t believe in placing our modern thoughts with an expectation of people understanding the same way historically. It’s sad that we haven’t truly accepted humans with different perspectives and experiences as equals. All races and religions separate themselves and group together in like thinking groups. My travels in many cultures and countries as well as religions gave me so many opportunities to learn about different cultures. Most people I’ve met have been amazing yet government and religious leaders seem to always be the problem. Yet here we are in 2023 still killing humans and destroying nations and humanity. We the people must stand out against tyranny rule and fight to be free regardless of color or religion. No one should be hungry or cold but we just won’t fix it. Individualism has to be absolutely protected for humanity to thrive in the future.
