Just got mine as well as a 'backup' or foul weather tent. I got the packed weight down to 34 oz (2 lbs 2 oz) by switching to DAC V-stakes and leaving the extra guy-out cordage at home (I don't really camp in exposed places). I'm sure one could get it down to exactly 2 lbs by switching to Ti stakes and leaving the tent bag & pole bag at home. First test was in 3 days of freezing rain conditions and I stayed perfectly dry. Downright impressive for the price.

Same here. I just got mine a few weeks ago and switched to the mini groundhog stakes and ditched the stake bag. Mine weighed out at 36 oz but I left the extra guy out cordage in by accident.....will have to take that out and re-weigh it.

I just got this tent on sale at REI for $277... My first small, lightweight tent... I got it for bikepacking. It went up easy. I got the footprint that goes with it, and if you don't set it up on level ground you tend to slide very easily. I imagine without the footprint it wouldn't be as slippery. You say you fit in the tent, but you weren't laying flat. I don't sleep with my knees in the air like that. I would side sleep with the knees bent probably. Does the tent give you the room for that since it narrows as it getd towards the foot box of the body?
@TheAmericanBackpacker5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. I am able to fully layout, knees not bent, in the tent with me on my air mat. The tent is by no means the Tajmahal but it provides me the comfort I need to get a good nights sleep. Some may want more based on their physical stature or other needs. The dual door design lets you put much of your non essential gear outside the vestibule, both sides, which is protected by the rain fly. The redesign of this tent gave it the interior volume boost it needed, especially around the headspace area. If you require more space I would recommend that you look into the NEMO Dragon Fly. The Dragon fly is a larger tent which is more comparative to the Big Agnes Copper Spur which also is a good quality tent. I am not a spokesperson for NEMO nor did they send me this tent. I purchased it and I can empathize with you wanting to know if the hard earned money you will be spending on it will make you comfortable and safe. If you need further please let me know. Comment sections add to the information on videos I put out. It educates those wondering about the same question. Knowledge is power, thanks again for watching.

@@TheAmericanBackpacker- Impressive you remembered! I love the tent! Not thrilled with the footprint, so I'm making my own. The one I bought will be going back. 9 ounces is way too heavy as an ultralight footprint. I'm 'processing' the Tyvek this week so it is less crinkly and easier to work with putting the grommets in over the weekend. And it will meet my specs! I really like the extra room in the tent so I can bring all my camera gear into the tent without fear of crushing it in the middle of the night. Not thrilled with having to ensure the stakes are solid. The BA is free-standing, so I could fudge it with rocks and anchor it down enough. Not so with the Elite. That thing needs solid stakes which could prove challenging when you are bedding down on solid granite. But I'll figure something out. Sorry for the book.

I have used Big Agnes and they make a good quality tents. Big Agnes makes a variety of tents with some having the Mtn Glo lighting system. Since I have used and field tested both, (Big Agnes and Nemo), I favor Nemo tents. Big Agnes tend to cost a little more and they are slightly heavier when you compare each of their UL tents. If you purchase a Big Agnes you will have a high quality tent, but for me, I currently prefer the Nemo tents until something better comes out.

Great review! I just bought a Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL3 for trips with my daughter, we both use 25 inch pads so I think it will be a good choice. However, I’d like to also get a tent for solo trips or when it’s just me carrying it..I’m torn between the new Nemo Hornet 2P , the Dragonfly 2p, or the 2P version of the Copper Spur HV. I’m also 6’3 215 so all things considered despite the extra 8-10 oz over the Hornet which tent would you recommend as a second solo tent? Thanks for taking the time to give your opinion!
@TheAmericanBackpacker5 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you. If I had to narrow down your choices it would be either the Nemo Hornet or the Big Agnes Copper Spur. So the question now is which one. It depends on what you are looking at in reference to space, mobility, and ease of setup. The Copper Spur HV will definitely give you more space and mobility than the Nemo Hornet. Ease of setup will go to the Hornet. I have used both tents and my choice would be the Nemo Hornet (re-designed version). The Copper Spur provides more room for me than the Nemo but the Hornet is a lighter weight tent that sets up quickly and provides me the necessary protection and adequate space, (for my needs) I need in a wilderness area. I have enough space in the Nemo to have a good nights rest and the two doors allow me to store the gear that I bring into a wilderness area. It is also a lower profile tent which I like. I recently returned from an adventure into the Blue Range Primitive in Arizona. That trip was a great test for the Hornet. The temperatures got down into the mid to upper 20s with freezing rain and I stayed dry and warm in my sleeping bag. We are both approximately the same size and my choice again is the Hornet but if you want more space than go with the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV. The Copper Spur is also more expensive than the Nemo Hornet not that it should be a factor in your decision but for some it may. It’s not an easy choice but I think you’ll be happy with the Nemo Hornet but ultimately I think for you it will depend on the space and mobility you will need especially if you carry a lot of gear. If you need further please let me know.

The American Backpacker thanks for the insight, much appreciated.. Yes, I’m leaning towards the Nemo Hornet as well.. I guess my only concerns are I’ve never used a semi freestanding tent before and I will have to use wooden tent platforms at times in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I always stake my tents out anyways as you have to if you use a rainfly..Also, I don’t use a ground sheet so durability is always a worry. Lastly , I know in the old Hornet there was some issues with rain coming through where the rainfly wasn’t adequate but I think they fixed that with the updated Hornet..
@TheAmericanBackpacker5 жыл бұрын
Using the wooden tent platforms would cause an issue when setting up this tent. Do you have to use these platforms in the White Mountains? On my adventure there I do not recollect having these platforms. Maybe there is another route you can use. As for the rain, I had no issue with water getting into my tent, (Hornet) on my adventure into the Blue Range Primitive. It rained one evening with very cold temps and I was dry and warm.
@kevinguzda11315 жыл бұрын
The American Backpacker I will google ways to stake out on wooden platforms, I know there are ways to do it but just not familiar.. A lot of the backcountry tent-sites in the whites have wood platforms so while not always the case it limits your options if you can’t set up a tent on them..

Yes it is. I am guessing they were looking to reduce weight which probably for some is a big sell point. I look more toward the design and durability of tents. Weight is not a huge factor to me even though it is in the top 3. Backpacks are the same way. My experiences with all types of backpacking gear over the years is that the lighter they get the less durable they become. That is not true in all cases though. There is a material called Cuben fiber that some tent manufacturers use which is extremely durable but the cost is too high for many to buy. .
@XxPetitNuagexX4 жыл бұрын
one question. i have the same tent but for one person. the tent bottom is not the thick material i know from tents. it looks like the tent cover wich lets through water when u touch it. so i am wondering if the tent bottom is waterproof when camping on wet ground?
@TheAmericanBackpacker4 жыл бұрын
The floor is made with a 15D Sil/Nylon Ripstop material which is waterproof. If the tent floor is constantly immersed in water then condensation from the difference in temperature from the outside and warmer inside will allow wetness to enter over time. That is why if you are in your tent at night sleeping your warm breath causes some moisture on the inside of the tent walls to accumulate. This is based on the difference between the outside and inside temperatures. I have used this tent on many adventures in both warm and cold climates. I have also experienced freezing temps and rain on these expeditions. I am very happy with its performance and it has become my go to tent for all my expeditions except those where snow is falling. In that case I would use a 4 season tent. When you set up your tent make sure you place it on the highest ground possible in your basecamp. If it rains the terrain around your tent will allow for proper drainage. The advantage of Nylon/Sil tents is that they are lightweight and durable but they have their limitations. Also, if you are in a rugged environment be careful on where you erect your tent. Take time to clear away damaging debris, ( sticks and rocks) that will cause these things to puncture the floor of your tent.

Most tents will protect you from weather elements except cold temperatures. I have used this tent in freezing temperatures (Blue Range Primitive), and what kept me warm was my sleeping bag. This tent is a (3) season tent not a (4) season tent. A (4) season tent will have a more reinforced structure (tent poles), to give it more strength in efforts to help prevent snow from collapsing your tent due to the weight of the snow. This is a great tent and it is my go to tent for now until something better comes out in the market. You should consider your sleeping gear, (sleeping bag, clothing, etc.), when it comes to staying warm. If you are going to backpack and camp in the snow then look at getting a 4 season tent for more structural reinforcement. Even with a 4 season tent you will still need a good sleeping gear, (i.e. sleeping bag etc.) to keep warm.

Great review! I review outdoor products as well and I love the detail and format of this video. I know you mentioned the tent was plenty roomy for just you, but how do you think two 6 foot tall men would fit in the tent? Would it be too cramped, or do you think it would be doable on a multi-day backpacking trip?
@TheAmericanBackpacker5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I will tell you that (2) 6 foot tall people in this shelter system will not work. I would highly recommend looking at a three person tent. Most tents will specify 1, 2 or 3 person capacities but that would be for those individuals of average size or less. Look at the NEMO Dragonfly or Big Agnes Copper Spur 2P they will provide more room. Your best bet would be the 3P tent. In a situation where you are with someone else and pack weight is an issue one may carry the tent and the other individual could carry other essential gear thus distributing weight if one shelter system is desired for your adventure. That is just a recommendation. If you like the Hornet I would say for each individual to have their own tent. Thank you for watching and commenting.
