Excellent Review Paul! I certainly had fun playing the multiplayer with you and was also very surprised about it, and had a very good time while playing it. Too bad my Mic had issues and my communication was very limited, sorry about that. But had a great time and felt we were a “crew” working together. Game is challenging for sure. It keeps me coming back for more. Thanks for the review.

The board looks like one of a modern war game like “By Stealth and Sea” or “RAF Battle of Britain”. They have the majority of rules also on the board.

Victories : 70% (from inconsquencial to triumph). You have to be good with the stat, and even more with sticking to your motive. I love this game.

I've played this game for quite a long time but I didn't know the rule that if you do a stalk attack, you can choose not to attack after you reveal the ship token. I thought the only benefit was +1 on your attack roll. This could have made a difference in many of the games I've lost.

Great review-yes there is plenty of randomness (bit of mitigation) which can infuriate you at times. I feel it takes you on a journey , similar to Nemo exploring the seas. Agree the cards can really screw you over at the wrong time, but I feel you are experiencing one version of 20000 leagues under the sea.

Excellent review, Paul. I've never heard of this game until I watched the playthroughs on your channel and I'm mighty impressed with it. I'll be keeping an eye out on the new versions of this game coming out in the near future. Thanks again! 👍

I wouldn't say this game has a strong narrative as much as it has a strong theme and a great atmosphere. If you're a fan, or at least familiar with the story and characters, and as you say, you read the flavor text, it does a great job of giving you the components needed to weave your own narrative, rewriting the story of Nemo in your own way. Anyways, the randomness may not always even out exactly, but it is highly subject to all kinds of mitigation, not just the resources and characters. There are treasures, technologies, and adventure cards that give you mitigation options too. I might be biased, because I have all the expansions and haven't played without them. But the randomness and dice rolls don't seem out of control to me, and I usually hate that. This really is a game you have to refine strategies for. The single most important thing that affects your chances of victory is how you handle ship placement. Putting the right tokens in the right places at the right times is what is really going to either make victory a possibility, or defeat a sure thing. I've got about a 50/50 win ratio going, and I'm no wizard. Victory in a proper Mage Knight scenario is still a dream unrealized for me. But I enjoy playing this almost as much, and highly recommend the expansions. Particularly the Nautilus Upgrade Pack. The Cloth Pack is a nice trinket, and Dramatis Personae adds some very handy mitigation in the form of character specific adventure cards. I think a lot of reviewers don't have the time to spend with some games that really need a little more of a deeper dive to fully appreciate. The game is beatiful, thematic, challenging, engaging, easy to learn, and is easily an 8 or 9 out of 10 for most solo gamers, In my opinion. I've played it around 15 times in the 8 months I've had it, always solo.

Great review. Love the game, just wish it would play a bit faster. But always enjoy when I can get the time to play. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for this review. I was so mesmerized by the visuals that I bought this game a year ago. Unfortunately, I found that the theme does not go past the visuals . It never felt like I was doing what the game was telling me I was doing. Most of the time it is about rolling dice, taking a risk to mitigate and then dealing with the consequences. Rarely did it feel like adventuring and the gameplay loop is so procedural that after a while all I was seeing was statistics, numbers and tables in my head. The lore text on the event cards leaves a lot to be desired and there is no narrative that unfolds here. Ultimately very arcade-y and not a lot of interesting decisions. I sold it since.

Did you get a solo game to replace it?

@@khew1 not a 1:1 replacement unfortunately but instead discovered Hadrian’s Wall and Spirit Island. Between those two my solo craving is covered for now

what is a game for you in which the theme does come alive and you feel immersed?
@jamielehn69263 жыл бұрын
I read the book 20000 leagues under the sea a few years back when I got this game….the game works a lot like the book. There’s some theme, a setting but the actual “story” of the book is a lot of disjointed events. So the game is true to the book!

great video u make an interesting point about random in games... maybe its because im mainly a solo gamer so i kind like my random and the only board games i really play with others dont have dice or very little like card games and cloudspire lol

Good review, Paul! Pretty much exactly what I thought you'd think of the game and you seem to have the same issues with the game as I do. At the same time, I really like the game. And I haven't had a decent victory either. My best was an "Inconsequential".

At first glance, the artwork and the gameboard didn't really lure me in, but after some time, it's kind of charming in its own unique way. Mega expansion coming? Do you mean there might be chances of 3rd edition (or even reprint of 2nd edition) with the enhanced rule book along with the big expansion on Kickstarter in near future?
@SeekerLancer3 жыл бұрын
I love the game board, it's very thematic like you're sitting at Nemo's desk planning out your next move and it has enough information that you don't have to keep going back to the manual. I did write the game off during my first impression of it though (thanks to some of the cheaper looking components like the treasures) and I mildly regret it as I played it on Tabletopia for free and fell in love. Waiting to get my hands on the Ultimate Edition hopefully in a few months.
@KyawThurein3 жыл бұрын
@@SeekerLancer Spot on! I did have the similar feeling of sitting at Nemo's desk. I guess it is the intention of the designer and the artist. I managed to get the retail edition and all expansions including the holidays on the high seas promo cards a year ago. I also backed Journey's End expansion from KS as well. This game has become my #3 all-time favourite games that would never leave my collection.

I really wanted to like the game, but I've found it a bit too dry for a thematic game: everything you do, you do it in the same way, rolling dice with very small (and always the same) ways to modify the rolls. Events are not very interesting, nor are the upgrades or the objectives. I'm glad i tried it on tts before buying it
@KabukiKid4 жыл бұрын
Yeah... not everything is for everyone. My grandfather always used to say, "That's what makes the horse races." heh ;-) I also prefer to try before I buy (definitely a wise move), but in this case, I did tons of research, but didn't have opportunity to buy and finally just bent and bought it. For me, I was pleased and the game has actually turned into probably my favorite solo game. :-)
