Hi guys. Just to let you know this song is written by a composer for the promotional campaign of an anime for children.

Well, that makes perfect sense. It has a kind of Disney feel to it. We try to keep our reactions fresh and authentic, so we try not to research songs before we react to them, so we did not know that. It certainly helps put it all in perspective. Thank you for the comment and for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

No problem. I always like your “true” reactions. You may try next their super heavy track “Zen” live. It’s written by Haraguchi-san and it’s a banger.

It reminds me of Aerosmith and Don't Want to Miss a Thing. Same story, Aerosmith pretty much had a rule at that time that they didn't do songs written by others, and they initially turned it down. But Diane Warren, Liv Tyler being in the film, and other commercial reasons led to it being a great song and a big hit. If you're gonna feed the beast, do it amazingly.

As you must be aware by now this was a commissioned song. The band was given the music and told to arrange and record it. For this they were paid well. Band-Maid has done this very thing at least six times. It is a way to expose yourself to people who would never hear you otherwise. After Life Mayu was asked what direction is your band going to follow: screaming or pop? Mayu answered both. As far as the song goes it is extremely well done for what it is a gives Mayu a platform to actually sing which, as evidenced by her performance here she can do oh so well.
@myindieprodentertainment

We totally agree. "Extremely well done for what it is" covers it quite precisely. They are a great band and I (Itai) don't think that they can do anything at a lesser level than pretty great at a minimum. As I expressed in the reaction, they did do it very well, but it did feel VERY familiar to me (although I can't yet pin it down to the exact song or two which it reminds me of). I look forward to our next Nemophila episode and remain a fan, so it's all good 😉 Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

They are hired "Guns" for this one. Composed by Ryosuke Imai, and is featured in the trailer for the anime film "Oshiri Tantei The Movie". Wider recognition and royalties every time it's played. Anime work is a big deal for Japanese bands.

Yeah, it sounds very different because their usual songwriters did not write it. A hired gun is a great way to describe their involvement with this one. In contrast, the songs that Band-Maid has done for animes were commissioned for them to write and perform. This song was written for Nemophila to perform... and they killed it.
@myindieprodentertainment

That does explain a lot. As I (Itai) expressed in the reaction episode, they perform it really well and I did enjoy it, but something about it felt out of place for them. Absolutely. However, this one is a different kind of slow for them. I (Itai) did like it, but it felt somewhat unoriginal. With the vast experience of the band members in various projects of different styles in the past, I know (hoping) their 'collaborative works' will be all over the place and complimenting each others' preference to make it work. That is why I am hooked to keep tap on them and see how far they 'want to go'. Time and time again, they showed that they could 'offer' something for everyone regardless of originals or covers, and you will never know what you gong to get from them in every release... just like my all-time favourite Nightwish, but from the other side of the world and a different era, though NEMOPHILA had been sharing that top spot for my all-time favourite band for as long as I can remember... a relatively young band with great wisdom.

This song is for the children's anime Oshiri Tentei, very popular in Japan. Hence the different style. And Mayu is a great ballad singer. In the show broadcast last Saturday they played this song.

Yes, a few have commented on that. Knowing that it was written by someone other than the band and that it was for children's anime helps make sense of it, no question. It was really enjoyable to hear how great Mayu's voice is and got to see another side of her vocal talents. The instrumentation was classic incredible Nemophila and Saki's lead work was awesome. It just goes to show you that when you put 5 musicians of this calibre together that they can play anything well. And the fact this was written for an Anime makes total sense. It's a first-time reaction so it wasn't what we're used to from Nemophila. It's not like we hated it. A somewhat surprised reaction to Nemophila doing this style is not so out of the realm of reason... I think you guys, the audience, sometimes forget that this is the very first-time we are hearing a song and we're just giving an honest reaction, not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. We did like the song, just surprised that it came from Nemophila, is all. Chill pills need to be taken all around. If we can't react honestly, what would be the point? We love Nemophila. We prefer them in different styles to this, but we don't like them any less. Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

ODYSSEY is a wonderful, polished, power ballad that will expose NEMOPHILA to the mainstream. I think it’s one of the best examples of the genre, and it really tugs on the heartstrings. I especially love how MAYU (“ma-yu”) and the piano close the song. They have already explored a wide variety of styles which you have yet to experience. Try their covers of ONE NIGHT CARNIVAL, DON’T SAY LAZY, DIAMONDS, ROSIER, and MAKE YOU HAPPY.

Hi Greg! Absolutely, we still have much to cover with Nemophila, no doubt. I (Itai) liked Odyssey, I just didn't love it as much as I did some of their other songs we've covered so far. What struck me was the fact that so much of it felt too familiar, yet I still enjoyed it and can't pinpoint the song or songs it reminds me of, but it will come to me. I think some people forget that this is a first reaction, and sometimes certain songs hit differently on the first go-'round. I know the Nemophila fans in our audience wanted us to like it more, but we are not ones to fake it just to pander to viewers. We prefer to give an honest, respectful opinion, which I thought we did. In any way, we both look forward to our next Nemophila episode, which should be coming soon-ish. Thank you, as always, for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

Nemophila will be releasing their new album called Evolve in a few days. I am guessing that the title of the album is significant. The album will have 10 tracks and Odyssey is the 5th, which is a good place for a ballad. Nemophila recently released a video promoting the new album and it has snippets of each song. Most of the songs sound very much like what we expect from Nemophila. Odyssey clearly sounds like the biggest departure on the album but Mayu's voice makes it work for me. The album also has Rise which is one of Nemphila's best ever, and shows off Mayu's harsh and soft, clean vocals. I like that Mayu is still experimenting and finding the strengths of her voice. She is the youngest member and was only 21 when the band was formed. That being said, Nemophila is still mostly musically controlled by their manager. Relatively few of the songs are composed by a band member (Haraguchi-san being the best so far), although the lyrics are primarily written by a band member. I will be very curious to see who composed the songs on Evolve. I am hoping they take more creative control.

@@myindieprodentertainment Mary's Blood was the second all-female Japanese band I discovered after Band-Maid almost exactly 4 years ago. Although the band didn't grab me like Band-Maid (and very soon after Lovebites), I was very impressed with the vocalist Eye and the guitarist Saki. I soon learned they were the main composers for the band. Later when I saw my first Nemophila music video, which was a cover of Iron Maiden's Aces High, I was very surprised and pleased to see Saki in the band. I assumed she would be the primary composer of the band. However on their first EP, she only composed the song Monsters, a song I really like. On their first full album, Revive, she also composed only one of the songs. I was hoping her contribution would be bigger on the next album, Seize the Fate, but, again, only one song. As I indicated in my previous comment, Haraguchi-san has been the most impressive in her few compositions, especially the songs Hypnosis (co-composer) and Zen (sole composer). I don't expect any member of Nemophila to be on the level of Kanami or Miyako (few in the world are on that level) but I think they could compose as a group, like Gacharic Spin. We will have a better idea on Friday when the new album is released. Speaking of Miyako, will y'all be doing a reaction to Miyako's piano interpretation of Eagle Fly Free? I had suggested a reaction to the Lovebites cover so y'all would be familiar with the song before experiencing Miyako's version.
@myindieprodentertainment
@myindieprodentertainment 11 ай бұрын
@@danw6048 That's very interesting, Dan. And yes, we'd have to wait and see what the rest of the songs on the new album would sound like. As for Miyako's piano interpretation, I thought you were suggesting that one as an "aside", something for us to listen to outside of the request of the band's cover. I can add it to our next recording session next week and give it a whirl. We have another Lovebites reaction sometimes before, so it would give us some decent space between Lovebites reactions, which we love doing 🙂

@@myindieprodentertainment I have listened to EVOLVE a couple of times now and I give it a 7/10 (very good but not great). Band members were solely responsible in the writing of only two of the ten songs - Alive, written by Haraguchi-san and Mayu, and Night Flight, written by Saki. I really like Alive and I continue to be impressed by Haraguchi-san. Night Flight is a vary catchy song and it was fun to watch them play it live, but it doesn't match the rest of the album. To me, It has a Beast in Black vibe which is not an insult (I bought the most recent Beast in Black album). Band members were co-writers on an additional four songs, so there was band involvement on more than half the album. Odyssey, not surprisingly, was written by an outside songwriter that seems to specialize in pop. Other than Odyssey and Night Flight, the rest of the album sounds very much like Nemophila.

@@danw6048 Makes sense. Still sounds like a good album, which might even be a grower and rated even more highly in future. Unfortunately, with doing the show, we no longer listen to albums in full, at least until we've covered all (or nearly all) of the songs from them on the show, keeping it open for first-time listens when reacting to them. Sometimes, it's a little annoying that we can't do that, but every time we cover a song in an episode, we know it was definitely better not having heard any of it before. The sacrifice! A gentle observation. Many reactors and fans have fairly rigid expectations about what kinds of songs bands should release. Then they judge the song based on those expectations. There is an expectation that every song contribute to a particular narrow "direction", and if id doesn't, it raises questions about the band's authenticity. Nemophila has shown us that they will not be bound by those expectations and to me, that makes them more authentic. Here's why. They experiment with sounds and musical ideas *and they share those experiments with us* where many other bands might not. So those last 4 covers they did on the initial impulse had a lot of fans scratching their heads. But those covers were *initial impulses* - quick interpretations of some diverse songs - done with limited studio recording time. This was a kid's anime track (and my grandkids loved it). They were clearly going for that classic rock ballad style, and they crushed it. Before that they release Zen (live). Before that was Change the World (live). All different, but all distinctly Nemophila. The through line is not a genre, but something sublime. Familiar, yet just out of reach. Fresh, but not avant garde. You like it even while you're questioning whether you should. And while you're wrestling with that, they are already working on the next song. That is Nemophila's signature, IMO. They are serious about their craft, not themselves.
@myindieprodentertainment
@myindieprodentertainment 11 ай бұрын
And we love them for it. We have experienced surprises from them before, although I (Itai) don't believe we've reacted to any of the covers they performed as yet. We do not have rigid expectations or any such things, however, it should be noted that we try to keep our reactions fresh, genuine and truthful, so we don't put a filter on them to fit to what we think (or sometimes know) people in the audience might want to hear. I used to watch reactors in the past, before we started this show, and I hated feeling like some reactors were pandering to the audience out of fear of backlash, negative comments, dislikes and loss of subs (and we lost a few here, even though we were largely positive and respectful). I promised myself and Asaf and we would never go to that place, so while we do our best to remain respectful, we are also genuine. What came out in the episode were my true thoughts when seeing the video and hearing the song for the first time (which might change somewhat on subsequent listens... or not). I even expressed that it is MY OPINION, which no one has to agree with, surely not the band themselves, who I love. And in all that, I did like the song. It just sounded like many other songs I have heard before and, aside for Mayu's voice, there was no other point of difference, which to my mind, translates as a lack of originality. Again, at the time of recording (because we try to know as little as possible about a song before reacting to it) we did not know that it was recorded for a kid's Anime soundtrack, that it was commissioned, etc., yet STILL, we did like it, just not as much as we've loved the other songs of theirs we've covered thus far. We are still big fans and that is not going to change. Also, we hope to react to some of those covers mentioned here, by you and others, in future episodes. Definitely intrigued. I think more than a change of direction it's simply them going off on a tangent . I'd be VERY surprised if this became a regular thing - but they ( as you would expect ) do it very well . Itai is entirely right it does sound like a sort of 80s/90s power ballad mash up - but I think that is either a strength or a weakness depending on your point of view . Personally I find it oddly comforting - a bit like a warm hug 🤷‍♂ In a way it also shows their versatility - if you played 100 people who didn't know them " Zen " then " Odyssey " I would guess 99% wouldn't realise it was the same band

I personally love this song; it immediately took me back to a different era. We're so used to seeing Mayu's voice being aggressive and strong, it was a little bit shocking to hear her sing in a very fragile and vulnerable way. To me, at least, there is no doubt that they were going for the 80s power ballad sound. Their hairstyles and clothes even reinforced that. I know this song is for an anime movies, so the style was probably dictated by someone else and it was up to them to make it work. And it definitely worked for me. I've watched a preview of their album that is being released in a few days, and I don't think you need to worry that they are changing their style. Pretty much every song on the album, with the exception of this one, is in the style that we know and love for them. Itai, I appreciate your honest reaction to this song. Hi Ralph! Good to hear from you again! Yes, this did take me (Itai) by surprise. But I suppose that is what first-time reactions are supposed to do. All in all, I did like the song, I just struggled to make it fit with Nemophila as musicians as this style is somewhat "Disney-esque", perhaps and at the time of recording (as we try not to know too much about the songs before we react) we had no idea that it was recorded for a soundtrack and other details behind it. In my opinion, it made for a better reaction, though diehard Nemophila fans seems to disagree, judging by the fact we lost a few subs with this episode. Oh well. We will continue to remain honest and authentic, as otherwise what would be the point? 🙂 As I expressed in many responses here and in the episode itself, we are still big fans of the band and look forward to covering them again (and again) in future episodes. Since Mayu's voice is one of my absolute favorites this was pure delight for me, poppy or not. Watching your reaction as you struggled with the why of the song, it made me wonder why someone in charge of that movie soundtrack would choose Nemophila to perform the song. If I had to guess, I believe Mayu's voice, especially in this song, would be an "attractive" voice to deliver it to the intended audience, which seems to be families with children.

Hi @twoffo ! Good to hear from you yet again! 🙂 As I (Itai) expressed in the video, I did like it for the simple reason that it took me back to a time when I listened to (very) similar types of songs. Once we found out, after recording, that the episode was for a soundtrack to a film directed at a younger audience, it made perfect sense. It does have a "Disney" kind of feel to it. Even though it is not my preferred listening style, I still liked many Disney soundtrack songs and other similar-type of ballads, as I did Odyssey. However, the thought of the "why" popped to mind right away (as I'm sure it did for many when hearing it the first time) and I expressed it as we always want our reactions to be true and genuine. I get that some Nemophila fans wanted me to like it more than I did on first listen, but... we can't always all feel the exact same way about everything. 🙂 In any case, I'm still a Nemophila fan and will remain so, and I get the feeling I might like this song more on subsequent listens... and even if I don't, it's all good. I look forward to our next Nemophila reaction either way. Thank you for, once again, taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

This is why Nemophila is "the soft and fluffy band from hell" - you never quite know what they'll do next! They have a unique sound, but you can't compartmentalise them. I'm thinking that if they released an English rewrite of Odyssey, it could become a commercial hit. Personally I love the song, one of the best power ballads in years. Itai, now that you are aware that this is a one off contract, which should resolve your internal conflict, I challenge you to play it two or three more times, and tell me that it's not addictive? 😅

Hi there @hoges412! Good to hear from you, as always! Yes, finding out why they recorded it and the details behind it did explain A LOT. As I expressed, I did like it at first listen, but was confused as to the "why" of it all. I will listen to it a few more times, where I am sure I will either grow to like it even more... or a lot less! 😆 With this type of music, overplay can take you in either direction. We'll see. In any case, I'm still a big fan of the band and look forward to covering them again in future episodes. Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

They visit different styles frequently. No one song reliably indicates a change of policy or direction with them. If there's one thing we expect from Nemophila it's surprises. BTW, Mayu's name is pronouced "Mye-oo", not "May-oo".

Is that like the two words "my" and "you" combined together? We suck at pronouncing foreign names correctly, mainly because we overthink it. Lol. As for the surprise factor with Nemophila, yes, this is not the first time they surprised us and we look forward to more surprises when we cover them in future episodes. We are still big fans! Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

Yes, at first I (thought) that I may not have recognised it if I only heard it on the radio or something and didn't know it was them, but about half way through I realised that there was no chance that I would not have recognised Mayu's voices. I liked the song, even though probably less than their other work which we've covered, but I'm still a big fan. They are an awesome band! Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

I'm not sure if it remind me of Aersomith directly, but it definitely reminds me of the change Aerosmith made to their style when they decided to go a little more mainstream than they already were. When Aersomith did it I remained a fan and the same goes for Nemophila, who are awesome! Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

I think you guys are being hyper critical and I thinks it's a trap that reviewers get fall into. Where you have to come up with something new to say to your subscribers . This song was written for an outro for a film and is a beautiful ballad and the last time I checked there is no law against a rock band doing a ballad. Just sit back and enjoy another side of Mayu's gorgeous voice......I don't know about you but I could listen to her sing the phone book !!!!!

Truthfully my least favorite Nemophila song by a wide margin. I have followed them after seeing the Ttrooper cover a week after it dropped. I graduated high school in 86 and hated and still hate the power ballad 80’s crap. Still a huge Nemo fan but am for the 1st time worried about an upcoming release. Like 7 of the 10 or so songs on the Evolve teaser have not grabbed me. I hope they grow on me after I purchase it.

I (Itai) totally get what you're saying. I do like the "power ballad 80's crap", always had a place for it even though I prefer heavier, darker music. Odyssey felt quite unoriginal to me, but they still do a great job... for what it is. Some people like those types of ballads and some don't, which is fine. We are definitely still fans and look forward to covering them in future episodes. A great band! Thank you for, yet again, taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏
