Neo is Deaf because of Me…
As you know our son was born with severe to profound hearing loss. Since he was born we always wondered about the cause of his hearing loss. So we decided to follow the doctors advice and get genetic testing for the whole family because this can give us better knowledge on why our son was born Deaf. Luckily with technology being so advanced and hearing aids not giving him enough for proper speech and language, we were able to get him cochlear implants. And now he is getting all caught up with his spoken language, and yes he still know ASL / Sign language. Neo: three-years old, knows the sign language, master the alphabet in both sign and verbal language (2.12 to 2.22), do simple math like counting, have the good sense of humor, have the good manner, clearly signifies his both IQ and EQ are above average. He is smart, much smarter than many other boy at his age. He is a polyglot in a way with him mastering sign and verbal language. He is adorable, with him sometimes being cheeky. By and large, i would like to say he is special, and special kids are for special parents. There is no need to blame anyone genetic wise for it is given. But being aware of it are indeed helpful to enable having the right decisions, responses, and mitigation, but not to find some kind of culprit. There is no cpijcidence in life, things happen for reasons, whatever the reasons just trust they are good reasons. As for Abella re cancer carrier, from a very personal point of view, i would say take it easy, be in peace with it, and adopt a healthy life style, such as go organic, natural and stay from junk food, and...stay away from stress. The junk food thing...tbh.. sometimes i can't help the temptation...but once in a blue moon should be ok. So, Niko and Chrysthal, if i may offer any magic phrase, it would be: "don't worry, be happy, stay healthy and enjoy your life."

I blamed myself for my youngest son being born blind with severe epilepsy along with a myriad of other problems. He was my 4th and never had any problems with any of my pregnancies. Didn't smoke or drink etc while pregnant. He was youngest of 4. Other 3 were healthy. It did come down to genetics with my son also. Sadly I lost him 2 years ago to a fatal Seizure. Miss him so much. Your great parents and u will get thru this. It's hard but worth every moment

I am a mom of 2 profoundly deaf children now adults age 24 & 31. I had all the same questions and doubts you have, what will the future hold? I can tell you that both of mine are in professional careers & doing great. Yes they’ve had their ups and downs in the hearing world. Having the right support, security & love has helped a lot. That's amazing. They conquered through all the ups and downs with your love and support. My son is 15, and he has global learning delays. I am always worried about his future. I hope that when he is older, he is also able to find a good job. Actually, he decided 3 years ago that he wants to be a fire fighter when he is older. At parents' evening, i mentioned this to his teacher. His teacher straight away said he can't be a fire fighter because he is slim and doesn't have the right body for it. This wasn't what i was expected to hear back and felt quite sad.

Audiologist here :) One thing a parent told me that has always stuck with me is, “Having a deaf child and watching them grow and learn lets you a experience a level of pride and joy that other parents simply don’t have the privlege of understanding.” Every time one of my Deaf/HOH pediatric patients learns a new word or sign, it is just the most precious and exciting feeling, and SO joyful. Also I’ve found from age 3-4 there is a HUGE language boost so get ready for your sweet baby to rock your world with all of his language development! ❤❤❤

You make learning fun for him and in each video, I can see how much he is developing. Genetic testing is so important, so future generations have knowledge about the possibilities of many problems. I went to school with two students whose parents were deaf and they were hearing students. This is a journey we always had a great time with their parents and would never speak negatively and the community was always really inclusive and supportive. I must say first, Neo is an amazing beautiful Little boy because of both of you. Now I have many in fact all the genetic medical issues from both my mothers and fathers side. Plus I’m a des daughter which comes with more. I’m one of 7 and I’m the only one with all the diseases. With all that being said, I am so blessed! I have a great family, friends and life. Hi! Commenting bc I work as a SLPA, and was teaching basic sign to children with language delays, Autism, & etc. Neo’s doing wonderful! You all placing him in a school that will help stimulate & increase his speech production. While helping him learn ASL to communicate is the best thing as parents you all can do! Props, to you all! From watching these videos his speech is getting a lot clearer and putting sounds, syllables, and eventually phasers that will turn into sentences together. He seems to have a lot of positive encouragement, so trust me when I say he’s going to be just fine!!! And I can tell from tasks from therapy are continuously carried over, which will further enhance his development. I want to say by age 6, he’ll be interacting so much! As long as you all continue to foster his growth he he’s gonna do great. I know it can be extremely hard on parents that have children with any form of disability, but I strongly hope you all can take some time away for just you all. It will only help strengthen your connection & show up even more for your kiddos. Even marriage counseling is a great avenue to discover that can help guide you all & serve as support when decisions get hard. You all got this!! ❤✨✨

Having this information is so important for your children’s future. I agree genetic testing is super important for future health issues and potential children that your children may have. A scary subject but super important for multiple reasons. I did my genetic testing after I got diagnosed with cancer just to make sure I knew of possible other cancer diagnosis for myself and my children and grandchildren.

Hi CAN fam, student doctor here :) First off, I love your videos and you both are doing a phenomenal job as parents!! Genetic testing is a powerful tool and incredibly helpful! The Col9A2 gene codes for one of the three alpha chains on type 9 collagen... If there is a mutation of this gene, it could impact cartilage and bone development. This gene is usually associated with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (malgrowth of ends of long bones). However, if this gene is maternally imprinted then it may not affect the child if the paternal copy is expressed. So, I would ask your genetic counselor about this.Also, ask about and look into the inheritance pattern of all the genes mentioned to see how your grandchildren can be affected. I would reflect on if there are any other individuals in your family with hearing loss and/or bone developmental/myopathy related struggles. For the three genes that are carried paternally, the inheritance pattern could be autosomal recessive which is signified by the manifestation of your affected child w/o affecting carrier/parent (in this case, dad). If this is true then, it is possible that your grandchildren may not be affected but double check with your genetic team about this and the possibility of Col9A2 being imprinted. I would also recommend that you talk to your primary provider/doctor about presbycusis chances and sensorineural hearing loss. I really hope this helps! Neo is amazing and I'm so proud of you all! This whole video has been a roller-coaster of emotions for me. From laughing at the cute moments to tearing up when Neo says something. Neo spelling turtles had me in tears... I am so proud of our little HEAR-O. I am also proud of Cristal and Niko.. You guys are the best... Seeing the progress Neo has made so far is amazing. I cannot wait to see more... I have two children with hearing loss. The older one had such a mild case of hearing loss. It was not even diagnosed till the second one was born three years later. We are thankful to God we have both children and both are flourishing. So just keep loving them, giving them all the support they can and as a mom of adults now, they will succeed in whatever they choose to do as long as they know you have their back! My younger son who has severe hearing loss is working on his PhD! We are so thankful and proud! So just keep supporting your son and whatever he wants to do and be his advocate until he’s old enough to be his own. And he will do great!

Continuing from above - we did not go on vacation until our kids were older without them. They both had hearing loss as I mentioned above. and I would not have changed it for the world. We have such good memories of us vacationing as a family, and the kids, who are adults now, have told us how thankful they are for all the time we spent together as a family on trips, exploring new places, and having experiences that they would not have had otherwise if they were at home. Vacations with us definitely help development and it actually made us stronger as a couple.
