I also served in the USAF but in the Civil Engineering squadron (base maintenance). During my first trip to Vietnam I could watch F4 Phantoms taking off on occasion from just behind a tall chain link fence. I'll never forget (especially at night) the long flame from their afterburners providing most of their visibility and all of their outrageously loud noise.

From Nov 1975-Jan 1979. I was stationed at Eielson AFB, Fairbanks Alaska. Was with the 1995th Comm Sq. Air Traffic Control. Eielson Tower and joint USAF/FAA Approach Control. The F-4s were at Combat Alert Cell at the approach end of Runway 31. Had BAK 12 Cable Arrest Systems in those days for the F 4. We had scrabbles all the time when Russians would enter airspace. Always on the 4th of July just for spite. The F-4s were with the 343rd Tact Fighter Group. 34th Squadron and 18th Squadron. Out of Elmenforf AFB, Anchorage, AK during that time. 40 yrs ago. Wow.

Glad to see nobody's giving you hell here over this, Phil! I noticed you had a few nuts raise a stink about another video and invoke the CIA conspiracy nonsense on something you had nothing to do with other than the upload! The crazies definitely pop up on occasion and make their unwelcome presence known. FYI-- relating to the Tu-95 Bear: they're still in service, will be for as long as the B-52 at this point. The Tu-95 engine noise is something that is inescapable and I think I had read somewhere they experimented with composite propeller blades in an attempt to reduce the noise level. It's supposed to be one of the noisiest aircraft ever built! They said the dB is so loud on the propellers that it's painful to the intercept pilots that approach that plane. You wonder how well the Tu-95 crew copes with that noise level but I would suppose the airframe is baffled to reduce noise levels to comfortable levels for the aircraft or that they wear noise-cancelling ear wear.

Thanks. I've noticed a lot of these conspiracy theories posted on KZbin nowadays. But I mostly avoid those discussion since they're trendy and fall by the wayside in the long run. Cipher, They're CRAZY people. They're as sad and obsessed about these ideas as the kids and adults who waste their time on social media and navel-gazing at celebrities. Now, I don't consider watching old documentaries a waste of time or the same thing as conspiracy buffing and "star-gazing" (and I don't mean astronomy there, either!). I consider documentaries entertaining and informatice -- especially anything made before the last 23 years when it became fashionable to turn everything into a storyline or edit it like a music video. OTOH, it's sad that the Bufords from Bowpatch, Shallow (Gene Pool) can post whatever they want and be a general nuisance to people (the guys who cry "CIA conspiracy" or "CIA shill" are inbred morons) BUT the social media web masters can do whatever the hell they want and remove things without a moment's notice. It's amazing how they nitpick the guys on KZbin who are NOT hurting anybody but let the other abuse from certified morons and crazy's go on!

List of aircraft losses of the Vietnam War From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Aircraft losses of the Vietnam War) Burning American aircraft at Bien Hoa Air Base in 1965 During the Vietnam War, thousands of U.S. aircraft were lost to antiaircraft artillery (AAA), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), and fighter interceptors (MiG)s. The great majority of U.S. combat losses in all areas of Southeast Asia were to AAA. The Royal Australian Air Force also flew combat and airlift missions in South Vietnam, as did the Republic of Vietnam. Among fixed-wing aircraft, more F-4 Phantoms were lost than any other type in service with any nation. In total, the United States military lost in Vietnam almost 10,000 aircraft, helicopters and 578 UAVs (554 over Vietnam and 24 over China).[1] There were about 11,835 helicopters that served in the Vietnam War. The records showing 5,607 helicopter losses or about half (excluding South Vietnam army lost)[2] South Vietnam's army lost 2,500 aircraft and helicopters, excluding UAVs (including 1,018 aircraft and helicopters lost from January 1964 to September 1973[3]). North Vietnam lost 150 - 200 aircraft and helicopters.

@adamfrazer5150
@adamfrazer5150 5 жыл бұрын
@@silvirhunter3607 I hear you - and and I agree completely. I guess my concerns are that throughout history whether its planes, cars or job descriptions, any time we've retired things with specific roles to replace them with just one to perform all those roles, it has been to our detriment. And each time we unveil this concept again, it seems arrogant to think history won't repeat. The F35 has been in development for over 27 years, still doesn't have a complete squadron formed and is the most expensive development in the history of our planet. Time will tell, of course. But time has told us several times already - in the future, an aggressor fleet with multiple aircraft with dedicated roles that they each excel at, versus one expensive plane in lower numbers ? Who would take those sorts of odds ?
@silvirhunter3607
@silvirhunter3607 5 жыл бұрын
@@adamfrazer5150 Personally i think the f35 was a bad move, for the same price we may be able to purchase maybe 2 or 3 F22's as 1 f35, or more f16's and 15's. idk, i guess i prefer more for the money.
@adamfrazer5150
@adamfrazer5150 5 жыл бұрын
@@silvirhunter3607 I'm with you on this man, it's the smart move to make. Actually reminded me of a doc I watched recently - I think it was on the original B1 bomber (it could have been the F111 though, I watch too many docs and now can't remember lol) but the interesting/alarming thing is that while experts in the military and taxpayers wanted the project cancelled, because the plane had soooo many different contractors across the US making all the different components, all these senators representing the different states all decided to vote for the project simply because it kept jobs for their voters ! And given the length of time the F35 has been in development, I'm worried it's gone too far for people to want to quit and sacrifice all it provides in terms of jobs/votes/industries. I'm all about new tech and fantastic machines, don't get me wrong, I just see all this unfolding and feel like I'm watching things repeat, except most ppl have forgotten it's already been done before. It's troubling that America has been pushing heavily for it's allies like Canada and Australia to ditch their fleets of F18s and commit to super pricey F35s when they don't really need such a hot rod, one that is still not ready - I think there's someone in the Pentagon trying to offset the price of development by getting others to 'pre order' their product. (Apologies for the lengthy response)
