YES! EXACTLY! The whole anime is not that dark and depressing, the message behind it and specially parts like this one is actually really hopeful and bright. For me it's more like an empty canvas rather than a blank wall. I don't know how to explain this but Jason Mraz said it in an interview a few months ago, life is empty and meaningless, but that's not a bad thing, it's up to us to give it meaning, we are hungry for meaning, like an empty cup, it's up to you what you fill it up with.

It’s so sad to me he was sent death threats because of this and he made EoE to spite everyone. He must have felt so hurt that he put his whole experience with depression out there and so many people rejected it
@kamenridergnostikos40843 жыл бұрын
@@MangoMagica He didn't make it to spite people. End of Evangelion was very, very true to the original concept for the ending. They ran out of budget and had to do an internal view of Third Impact instead of actually showing it on screen, which was fine because they'd intended to do that part anyway, they just had to extend it much further than intended. You can see large parts of the EoE story, including multiple deaths, in the anime ending. If all that was to spite the audience, it wouldn't have been in the "good" end. IMO EoE is the same timeline of events. The (majority of) the last two episodes happens during EoE, RIGHT BEFORE the real-life eyeball shows up. The eyeball is immediately after, and it represents Shinji waking up to reality after the "Congratulations" scene. The anime ending was internal - you have actualized, congratulations. The movie ending was external - you have actualized, good luck living in a world that is shit. The movie ending follows axiomatically from the TV ending. They are different perspectives on the same sequence of events. The anime portrayed actualization as liberating. The movie portrayed the fact that an actualized person still has to exist in a broken world. And that doesn't touch on the religious symbolism. Which, for the record, they claim is nonsense... but from the perspective of a certain religious sect, everything about that story, including the fact that the writers will not explain the symbolism and will instead explicitly tell you that it isn't there when it clearly is, weaves a very clear and much more complex interpretation of the narrative. But on that front, as Anno says, those are answers you have to find for yourself. Nah. EoE was the culmination of everything Anno was doing with that series. It was harsh because it was supposed to be harsh, not because he was angry. While I'm sure it irritated him that people didn't get it (and I'm sure it irritates him more that to this day most people still don't get EoE... and that they still think the Rebuilds are a rehash of the same ideas and not the very complex meta-narrative about the series itself and its fandom that he's clearly weaving...) I'd wager he was more excited he actually got to do the ending he wanted, than irritated at the reaction.

It really breaks my heart when people say "Shinji is a whiny bitch." He defiantly suffers from Hedgehog dilemma & is afraid to socialize with others! This is most likely because his father left him when he was a child, most kids that grow up without a father deal with people differently because they didn't have a father figure in there life to look up too. It's worth mentioning that Shinji's mother was for the most part not around, she was around when Shinji was was much younger but she's gone. Shinji doesn't want to polite unit 01 because he sees the world as it is, he's not getting anything out of it, his father still doesn't talk to him or want to live with nor does he have a special person in his life at all! He has low self esteem issues and can't express his feelings towards anyone. One parent is dead while the other like Rei instead of Shinji. So when I hear people say " Shinji is a whiny bitch." I hope people will look deeper into Shinji, because he's been threw a lot in his life!

At first I tought he was just an indecisive kid ruining everything. @dastanjan3203 жыл бұрын
There is no ”whiny bitch” in this world. Those whom we tend to call whiny bitches are people that have the wrong personality regarding the trouble they face ahead. The real whiny bithces are mostly sopiled brats and ”daddys girl” because they had someone to care for them and offred the all the needing. This is why they are those spoiled kids that sometimes grow into adults and annoy the people around them. Regarding Shinji, he is anothe story. As I said, he has ”the wrong” personality when fighting his own problems and goes ahead with inertia, without having a real purpose that he tries to achieve. Look at Asuka. She had a similar problem like Shinji, but her personality helped her face her problems and she did not care for most of the show. This is because she fought her problems with improving herself and aiming high, being the best and only the best. When Shinji overpassed her skills, she became like him, mentally brokedown. Because her will to continue living was killed by the simple fact that Shinji was improving. Regarding Shinji, his will was to be recognised and loved by others, but mostly by his father! His father was a dick(ok, he had his reasons, but still a dick)and that attitude towards parenting a child led his kid into looking for praise and the mention why he is important. Shinji wanted others to tell him his personna is impornant. But Everybody around him, (Asuka was a dick to him because she did not had a ”right personality” regarding helping someone with poor self esteem; Misato simply did not get involved into helping him mentally, she was just there to take care of him phisically, but almost no mental help; Rei was identityless, she had no personal thoughs and so she was not for much help) were not enough to make him feel that he matters. Look at Rei for example: Genbu made her feel important when she undertook that failed test because he sacrificed himself as a father to rescue her. He made Rei feel important. Nobody made Shinji feel important other than the guy who claimed he loves Shinji and he had to kill him in the end, complete mess up. In the end, Shinji had to go throught that weird simulation to accept that his personality in another world would have made him feel he matters truly.

TL; DW: It's better to have suffering with the possibility of happiness, better to have definition than ambiguity, better for there to be noise than comfortable silence, even if it hurts. Because silence is boring nothingness. Because love can only exist between distinct things. Because suffering is the cost of happiness. And it's worth paying. Even if others hurt you, even destroy you - you owe them everything. Without their lines to delineate your own shape, you are formless. You only have existence, and no meaning to attach to it. Everyone's truth is defined by everyone else's truth. When you unconditionally accept the truth of another, that is love. Completely independent truths, all different, all simultaneously true, all simultaneously accepted. What we seek is, has always been, will always be, the harmony that exists when separation is dissolved, without the ennui that comes from having no definition of the self. Life is the delineation of separate forms, love is learning not to reject the boundaries formed by that delineation, but instead to be thankful for the definition they provide and to work with them, instead of against them. And also, if everyone's Tang, then no one can drink it. Delicious, delicious Tang.

To be fair, you cant expect (most) 14-16 year olds to really appreciate this, let alone younger children. I think that is probably one of the main reasons why this ending got so much hate initially. Its only that we're older now that we can really appreciate this. Its kind of like the Matrix sequels, heavy philosophical and insightful ideas aimed at an audience that still have to ask to go to the bathroom at school, it just doesnt work. The content of the ending though, the way its presented and what its trying to say truly is beautiful

Coming back to this show again. When I first watched it was a teenager and was relatively comfortable with myself. I had dreams and goals to look forward to. At the time, FLCL resonated with me more due to trying to fit in or be “cool.” Watching again now at 30, I have severe depression and have no aspirations anymore. Nothing panned out like I thought it would. I feel like I’m having an identity crisis everyday and I don’t relate to people. I feel so detached from myself and others. In short, this scene is hitting me like freight train and I’m bawling.

For many of us the difference between our child-selves and adult-selves is the loss of hope, of the idea that the future is welcoming and bright for us. And not to sound naive, it obviously isn't always the case, but to view it completely opposite and say that the good days are past and the future holds nothing for you is also ignorant of the different good things in life that can happen, will happen, and that are already present in one's life. We should all strive to regain a bit of that optimism that we lost sometime growing up. Hope all works well for you! Take care!

There are so many people in this world who hate themselves. They think they're worthless. Rei said in the ending scene that "if you do not love yourself, you won't be able to love others (or something along those lines)." I'm a Christian. I find value in myself for the fact that I can love myself and accept myself for who I am with the ability to show love and kindness to others through the Holy Spirit's love dwelling in me. If I was filled with hate and bitterness, I would be unable to love myself, and therefore wouldn't be able to love others and show them the kindness and appreciation that I share towards myself. Your self image...what's in your heart....is what makes you...you. If you close off yourself from others, you're insecure, and in a way reject yourself because you cannot get in touch with yourself or others. Deep isn't it?

supertechnoman11 he literally made EoE because he wasn't happy with the series ending... the hell you on about?
Your value in life is determined by you. Why? Because your mind = your own world where you are limitless and can mold into whatever shape you wish. But if your own little world has nobody but you, you won't be special at all. No matter what shape you mold into or whatever value you assign yourself, if there is only you, there is no difference between you and mundane nothingness. The way to fix this is to introduce the influence of others and external factors in your little world. The presence of others distinguishes your identity, because now you can use the barriers between you and others to differentiate each of your identities. In other words, the presence of multiple people (rather than one being) allows distinct identities to exist. So: While it is true that your value in life is determined by *you*, if you are all that exists, your self-determined 'value' would be meaningless and completely un-special at the end of the day. To give meaning to that "value" you've given yourself, you need the presence of others to distinguish your identity.

I thought I had not understood this anime, and thought it only left more depressed, and right now, after thinking I could feel no more, thinking I was totally depressed, and then I saw some Eva vids and I broke down in tears. I understood, not life, not me, not my feelings, but my worth. I understood that I choose my own path, and what makes my life worth to live is my will to live it, I can have the best life ever, I only need to live it and work hard, my life is worth living because I can learn to love myself, my life is worth living because I am me, and only myself can turn my life to the best turn. Evangelion isn't only about individuality, and giant robots, and it certainly isn't a anime that teaches you how to win against depression, but teaches you how to cope with it. Nothing in your life will take away your failures or bring back the "better days" but only yourself can choose to live, and even if you're at rock bottom, as long as you keep living, your life can be as good as you want it to be. You are yourself, and that makes you you. You are yourself, and that's what make you loveable. You are yourself, and that's what make your life worth living. So even if times are hard, live, until you love yourself, and until you can find your true happiness
