Before I forget... before they invented xenon automotive timing lights, there existed NEON timing lights. They were deceptively simple affairs, and consisted of a large, coiled neon discharge tube behind a strong magnifying lens. The tube was connected in series with the #1 spark plug via a generously long cable and at the cable's terminus was a dongle of sorts that you plugged in between the spark plug cap and the spark plug cable. The HV pulses from the ignition coil fired the neon tube before reaching the spark plug. These timing lights usually came in a black plastic pistol-shaped body.
