Neons & Neutrals: A Conversation with Valerie Ng & Caitlyn Turowski

In this sixth episode of the conversations with the designers of Neons & Neutrals, we chat with Valerie Ng, designer of the Yu vest, and Caitlyn Turowski, who created the sweater pattern called Confluence. We dscover Vaelrie's background and her journey to knitting, her design process and the technique of stranded herringbone stitch. Caitlyn grew up knitting with her grandmother while watching The Price is Right! She loves fashion and crafting and is inspired by the places she travels to. Our two test knitters are Marilyn and Tanya, two experienced and delightful knitters. And we get the funniest response to a funny question we have ever had!!

I really enjoyed Valerie's talk. Firstly she is very brave as a HK Chinese to admit burnout and do something about it. But also - to pick up on her comment about meeting people and making them comfortable with you because you are knitting. I was a business traveler for 15 years and spent 10-20 hours a week in airports and on planes and it was amazing how many strangers would see me knitting, sit down beside me, and start telling me about their history or problems they were having. It was an extraordinary experience for me and i one i felt so privledeged to experience. What a great series this is.

did you ever circle back on the topic of yellow? i would love to watch that conversion and perhaps you could open it up to all people of all colors. i am not Asian, but i grew up in Melbourne where all we ever wore was black and gray. very sleek, but boring as hell. even as a white girl, growing up you were expected to look like everyone else, and any time i tried to be me people were belittling and made fun of me. its only now as a 54 year old living in California have i been able to give up that stereotype of what i should be wearing.
