How do you get to use all of the Mario and Sonic characters on the tournament events 😕🤨🤔😶?

I believe you have to just use your Mii for tournaments. When you play the events on their own you can play as any other character.

@NeoTechnoman The reason why I ask ❓⁉️❔🙋‍♂️ is because I watched videos on KZbin of the he tournament 🏟️ gate and I got to see all of the characters of Mario and Sonic used in those ones.
