The stupa was most probably built by Newar king. But Tibetans have strong influence on Buddhism in Nepal. 500 years ago Mallya dynasty prohibited the monks in Nepal learning Buddhist scriptures. Tibetans have a mythical story how this stupa was built and named. The relation between Tibet and Nepal began in 7AD when Tibetan king Songsten Gampo married Nepalese princess. Since then Nepalese artisans were employed by Tibetan royals and monastery to built temples, make statues etc. From 8AD onwards Tibetan adopted Buddhism as a state religion so many Tibetan studied Sanskrit in Nepal before going to India to study Buddhist philosophy. The Vikramshila university is most sought after by Tibetan monks. Bihar and West Bengal and Kashmir region were Tibetan student came to study from 8-12AD. After destruction Budhism in India Tibeyan stopped coming to India except occasionally as pilgrim to Bodhagaya, Varanasi etc places connected to Buddha and Buddhism.

Yeh stupa tibet ke raja nahi banaya. Yeh stupa 3-4th century ma banaya tha. Tab nepal me licchavi king viikrama ditya(shiv dev 1st) huwa karta tha. Unka palace haal ki narayanhiti durbar me tha. Unhone apne palace ki paas hi ek stone spout banaya tha jis se paani nahi aya. Jyotishiyo ne kisi 32 gun yukta purush ke bali di jane par hi paani aa sakta bataya. Tab unhone apns bete ki hato apna bali diya aur us stone spout me se paani aya. Us raja ka sar udkar bajrayogini temple sankhu me ja gira woh patthar ka ban gay. Dukhi huwe beta ne sankhu ki us temple ma jaakar ek murga ko udaya aur jaha par woh murga land karega wuha par stupa baneka ka bichar kiya. Woh murga usi jagah lar jaakar land kiya aur stupa banaya. Us bakt drought tha to drew drop se water collect kar stupa banaya. Isliye is stupa ko khasti mahachaitya kahate he.( khasu=dew, ti=drop, mahachaitya=great stupa) . Baad me shah raja is ko baudhanath namakaran kiya.
