Ranger is a surprisingly diverse class. For example If you want to be a Tree.... You can be a Tree. #PrimevalGuardian.

It's important to emphasize the ranger ethos. They are not just fighters with wilderness skills - they are warriors who guard the frontiers of civilization. That's why they aim to hunt particular kinds of creatures (those who threaten to invade), and make friends with animals (to help guard distant outposts). Arguably, Jon Snow and Robin Hood are also rangers - the former because he literally guards the frontier (and bonds with animals), the latter because he stands for a return to justice in a corrupt society.

I created a group of "cave" rangers that guarded an underground "forest". it wasn't trees growing underground but a huge system of roots that grew into the caverns

the one ranger I played (water genasi hunter-archer) I had to kill off when I became the DM in the campaign we play in. But if I ever get the chance, I will definitely make a Goliath axe & shield carrying deep stalker ranger who has a phobia for fungus and therefore mushrooms

I made a Dragonborn Ranger, but he's literally a cowboy. I did it accidentally too, as I just made him a proponent of frontier justice in general and super stubborn.

I was thinking it would be cool to award players with Favored Enemy after they've faced enough of them over the course of their career, regardless of their class.

Wood elf Ranger (hunter) that specializes in killing big beasties from the Underdark, Mountains, and Forests. Fiends, Dragons, and Aberrations beware! Forgot to mention I'm a stealthy DEX based tank that dual-wields enchanted rapiers (more or less).

I’ve started creating a ranger, and I’m a little confused about the aspect of armor vs proficiency. It says a ranger can be proficient in stealth, yet wear scale mail which imposes disadvantage on stealth. How would I go about that in a game? Just use my lower stealth roll and add stealth modifier on that?

I have a question if you play a ranger and want to choose dragons as a favorited enemy because a dragon was hold up in the forest were my ranger came from but my dm said I faced orc and goblins the most so that is my favorited enemy is it ok for the dm to force your favorited enemy and how do I try to get to change his views on it.
@Zadok137 жыл бұрын
To address your question directly, he sort of can but sort of can't (or rather probably shouldn't). You've got to play the character so it should be your decision, but he's got to run the campaign so he can technically veto anything (the idea being that he can stop "disruptive" characters if necessary). It's generally considered very bad form for a DM to "force" a character decision unless the player's being a dick though. That being said, it honestly sounds more like he's trying to do you a favour by not quite telling you that you will face very few dragons but lots of orcs/goblins in the campaign, and the latter would frankly be a much better choice.

could a Scout be a Ranger?
@MrDe4dGuy347 жыл бұрын
Matt You could argue that, but whereas a ranger is a warrior with a focus on nature, I see a scout as more of a rogue with that same focus.

@chaddixon97647 жыл бұрын
ryan rhino Nope, Legolas is a ranged Fighter.
@tanni4897 жыл бұрын
I think the opinion that Legolas is a ranged Fighter is just a good example of how un-ranger like Aragorn actually is seeing as he never really does ranger like things other than being called a ranger
@chaddixon97647 жыл бұрын
tanni489 Your comment is a good example of a non sequitur, your assertion does not support your conclusion.
@Jonatron1016 жыл бұрын
He speaks to animals (albeit only a horse), he is an unrivaled tracker (even the overpowered Legolas who can see around the curviature of Middle Earth steps back to let him make survival rolls to track). The D&D class came after the character and the character was so named because a ranger is a person who is known to "range" IE: out on the range, The Lone Ranger, the Texas Rangers. Miltary people who patrol the wilderness which is what the Dunedain Rangers were - wanderers (or a Strider) of the wilderness who were one of the many things that held evil at bay. Aragorn's job (and training) is that he is a ranger. A wilderness cop. Aside from living in nature and having his racial abilities, Legolas is a really good fighter who is entirely focused on being really damn good at shooting things with a bow. He's comfortable in the wilderness but his job is kill things as efficiently as possible, not to say he doesn't know how to do the things that Aragorn does but they're Aragorn's thing. All comparable quality comes from racial ability and living in a forest, race and background.

Can a ranger use a gun?
@cvernon52567 жыл бұрын
Totally could, given that your DM allows guns. It just depends on how you play your character, whether it requires specific training, and so on. But yeah, guns would absolutely be their thing.
