As a reenactor (even though my group isn't super strict on "accuracy" we aim in the direction) it was SO BEAUTIFUL so see actual Medieval Nordic culture showcased and not just the fantasy TV show. It must be so awesome to reenact this history in the place where it happened, with people who've studied it. "I don't wanna be a normal person" when you have to go home is SUCH a reenactor feeling! You did great at learning the fighting for what you were able to pick up in such a short time!

To anyone being sad that they won't experience this because they don't live in Norway: You can do this anywhere. Despite the portrail in media, vikings were not that special, just normal people who hadn't have enough to eat and therefore raided other regions. This happened all over the world, so I can guarantee you, the culture of your country is equally cool if you learn about it, no matter where you live :)

Viking stories are quite interesting, they are short, they prioritize highlights, and they are often exaggerated, because in the Viking age, disputes were often settled with axe, it was important scare potential rivals. If did die in battle you ended up in Walhalla, being sick was biggest sin, and end in death empire where Hel ruled the underworld. Already locked into this video the moment she said "And Hansi has already been training with the local Viking group for a while". First of all, that's delightful. Second of all, the phrasing of this implicates the existence of multiple scattered groups of viking groups all around Norway as a fun and cool hobby, like signing up your child for karate or taekwondo. Which is, again, delighful. I love it Edit: I am immediately going to be looking for nearby medieval fighting clubs. If I can fence, I can do this, right? XD

I used to do viking re-enactment for about 20 years , I used to make my own swords, shields, tents etc- even my own tunics and shoes, it was great fun- remember take the fight to your enemy, when outnumbered- attack, when faced with a longer weapon, your safest place is closer to your opponent. I have taken out opponents without even slowing down in a charge. I once entered an arena of over 200 warriors, to find myself on the wrong side of the battlefield- alone against the entire other army, they got me- but only after I had got their 3 main leaders (at which point about 20 of them jumped on me) but it disorganised their army enough for my side to win.- the reason that the tunics were made from lots of narrower pieces- the viking looms were not that wide (I have built and used one of those too to weave my own cloth.)

Yea... Human hands are somewhat fragile. Thats why in my HEMA club we do recommend at least something like hockey gloves or motorcycle gloves when sparring with padded swords and full HEMA gloves when sparring with steel. But at the same time modern medicine can do a lot reattaching fingers. Losing fingers isn't that uncommon. People cut themselves with tools, get into mashines, get hands stuck in heavy doors, have heavy stuff fall onto them or their ring gets caught on something and rips of the meat of their finger....

I got such a nice feeling thinking we now fight like this for fun, people have learned to leave differences back, hopefully in the future people will play war like we do today just for fun/culture and no real wars would exist :)

I think this is my favorite video you folks have made. It’s tough to know for certain because you’ve had so many fantastic projects, but this was epic. You should do occasional history period crafts and whatnot. Also, some whittling and woodcraft projects would be fun. Of course, I used to enjoy going to history reenactments.

Hi Martina, ❤ Long time reenactor speaking here... I love to see you growing into this, and enjoying it. I am always a bit scared to see anyone practicing without a helmet... I had my bit of breaking body parts fighting battles. In 30 years of cavalry reenactment I did Napoleonic cuirasier (14th Dutch in French service), medieval foot knight, Norman foot and Norman Cavalry and did the Hastings battle twice. Most Important: your friend Hansi enjoys it too! My girlfriend didn't like it at all, that was real trouble... So, more of this, I really enjoyed this episode ❤

Hi! Not Martina, but I was very curious - is this a geneal reenactment they were doing when fighting? As a fencer and now a HEMA practicitioner, I felt really anxious watching them fight without any protective gear, especially with steal weapons! Is there a certain technique how it is done "safe" in reenactment? I always thought reenactment was sort of theatrical exactly for safety reasons - it is easy to get overexcited in a bout or even just to hit someone by accident, especially with beginners.

@@a_karch I believe they are doing a western style of fighting in the Viking reenactment. The hits are generally pulled back a bit but when I did this we still hit each other and bruises were a thing, accidents happen still but it was generally pretty safe. There is also Eastern style fighting that allow head shot and you are required to wear a helmet hits are generally a bit harder but still safe. You also have Huskarl which is more a full contact hard hits with a face mask if I remember correctly. I only did western fighting so can't speak too much on the others. Most of the western style is actually very safe (minus the accidents that happen from time to time) most people know when they have made a miscalculation and the pull back their blows. The only bruises I ever received were on my thigh, arms, and torso.

@@a_karch as nachtmare says, this i s western style reenactment fighting. The techniques are designed to not hurt the opponent. Just as you probably know there are things you do in HEMA to maximise the effect of your strikes, twisting the leg just so, hitting through the target etc, you can reverse those things, make the hit max out just before the target etc. We do train this, and fight, competitively though. We pride ourself on fighting safely, you should be able to fight this safely naked. in 20 years I have never regretted not wearing a helmet.

@@a_karch I have also always wondered about how realistic fighting practice can be without extensive protective equipment. I would assume the movements must be very slow compared to real fighting as it's almost impossible to hit fast but not hard if the weapon has any weight. After all, without protective equipment you can very easily kill someone even with a blunt weapon if it's made of metal and used at realistic force and speed. Even a wooden practice sword can break bones and even be deadly if used against the head. So yes, probably more teathrical than an actual martial art but obviously great fun still.
@Nix6p
@Nix6p 3 ай бұрын
Part of the safety consideration is your level of "assumed armour" in a competition vs what you're actually wearing. HEMA generally assumes no armour, but you still hit each other at full speed and so you need protective gear to stay safe. The SCA assumes chainmail, which means their strikes need to be harder in order to count as a victory. But it also means they need wooden swords and heavier armour, which is obviously more protective than actual chainmail. The increase in martial accuracy in both of those cases means that they will never look historical, even if they really try. In reenactments, they choose to focus on the accuracy of the equipment at the expense of the accuracy of the martial art. In this case, by pulling their shots and banning head strikes. It's always going to be a tradeoff, it's just about choosing what matters to you.

I am a huuuge fan of Norse culture especially Old Norse (to the point I have even slightly studied the language) and whenever Martina touches on Norway and her roots it makes me giggle with happiness. I am pretty good in swords fighting as well (free style and have trained fencing), good with the bow and love horse riding so I am ready! Where is my legendary path of a great shield-maiden ahahaha

So cool. Though I would've loved to see their faces, if after her demise at 25:25, Martina 'respawns' as full Dark Sorceress, with her Armor, glowing Crystal Blades and her hellhound Nori in Armor. Also their amazing fight needs to be immortalized in a cool painting from Martina. Maybe even in a kind of medieval painting style?
