This was a blast to make! Regarding the deep resin pour that cracked, we were way within the 40-120mm thickness and 80 liter range that it was rated for, so that was a bit of a bummer! The room temp should also have been okay. So I guess we're using another brand for our deep pours next time 😅But luckily I think it worked out in the end nonetheless!

I get where yall are coming from but hear me out. If we look at every time something astonishing is discovered. You never would have thought about it before its existence right? Would you believe humans could watch anything or contact anyone from anywhere around the world a 100 years ago? Heres why i doubt youtube will still exist 2000 years later. There will be something completely different than what we expected that will defeat youtube. And you really think that the owner of youtube will be passed on the perfect person EVERY time for 2000 years? A lot of things can go wrong. I do not expect any app to survive more than 200 years on the internet. There is waaay too much space for something other than youtube. It could be similair to youtube like being able to post videos on the app, but it will come with its differences. I havent mentioned this, but in response to Amanda Galletti; is it really possible to find this video 2000 years later IF youtube would still exist? By that time too much stuff will be on the internet. Sooo many videos would exist that this video will get lost in history. Maybe there will be something completely different than videos that the human hasnt even thought of yet. So to sum it all up: yA never know 😂 Edit: I just realised that what Luthril said can go against the part where i said that this video will get lost in history. That can very much come to exist. Another point i made tho is the fact that youtube will probably not be a thing anymore. To be more specific. Nobody will use it anymore. And yes with the help of data archeology this video could be found. But how specifically this video? How would they know the title or channel? Cross off every single video till the right video is found? Maybe other apps will come into existence similair to yt. How would they know what app to search? How would they even know if there is a video about it? Soooo its very much impossible to find specifically this video.

I actually love the bubbles! the one with the Mermaid is such an incredible accident because it looks like she moved her hand from bottom to final position and created a trail, with the bigger bubble around her hand AND she's looking at it? It's actually perfect? And the ones around the bridge ad so much life to this, I actually wish there was a few near the fishes as now they look a bit less realistic compared to the bridge/mermaid, it's mad! But it's a tiny tiny detail and the final result is mind blowing xx

The bubbles came out of the bridge because you used foam. The air was trapped inside of it and it managed to get out of the epoxy to form bubbles. You can avoid this issue by locking up the air in the foam with a thin brush-applied layer of epoxy on the foam. You let that layer cure separately and put it in one's the protective layer is hard. Then you can use it in the diorama without having to think about the air coming out in bubbles. (At least I did it that way and it worked perfectly fine)

Any porous material needs to be sealed, if you don't want or expect bubbles. Definitely stuff like foam, wood, sponge, etc. But, her mistake actually added to the scene. That big bubble can be drilled and filled with a syringe but again, works out for effect.
@mockier

A good alternative would be to use clay or putty to make things instead of foam. As far as the mermaid's hand goes it could have been air trapped in the FDM print, especially if it was hollow.

I am late to the party, but I was wondering if you or someone has a theory on the forming of the bubble on her hand too, thats an extremely odd one. its like it bursted out from somewhere and started to raise to the surface, but it followed the orientation of the scene and not the physical realm :D (cause it was poured laying on the back)

Absolutely incredible! Now about the bubbles - the foam is mostly air, so when you put pressure on it with pouring the thick resin, the air inside is escaping. There is a trick to get the air out of the foam before you start working. Put a piece on a plate inside a pressure cooker, fill with water just to the edge of the plate, close the cooker and put it on the stove. After it stars letting steam out, leave it for 10 minutes, then get it off the heat, release the pressure and open it. The foam piece will be shrunk considerably, because all the air will be out. That's the way not to bubble up inside resin 😊

The vibe I get from the mermaid is that she’s somehow drawing/bending oxygen gas out of the surrounding plants into her hands. It also reminds me of ‘pearling,’ a phenomenon where so much oxygen is produced by plants or algae underwater that they send a visible stream of bubbles to the surface, a sign of rapid photosynthesis :)

I think the bubbles around the bridge were probably due to the air trapped in the foam. Maybe pre-sealing foam pieces in resin could prevent this from happening in the future? @tantamounted
@tantamounted 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that pre-sealing the foam with some clear resin or paint could have helped. Another thought is that I've seen woodworkers who pour acrylic, using a pressure chamber or a vacuum chamber to reduce bubbles in their castings. But a pressure chamber can sometimes wreak havoc on foam, since many foam types have air bubbles in them to give volume.

As for the deep layer of resin warping: That's most likely because resin releases heat as it cures, so the more resin there is, the more heat is produced. Some resins are formulated for deep pours, which cure more slowly so there isn't so much heat produced in the reaction. One thing you could do about the bubbles around the hand is to drill two holes into it, one as an air vent and one for filling resin into, so that you can fill the bubble. The problem with this, though, is that you would need to color match with the blue pigment. I think the bubbles around the hand actually do look pretty cool, though. I think all the bubbles around the bridge are from air trapped in the foam. Next time you want to cast foam in epoxy, first try coating it in a layer of epoxy and letting it fully cure before encasing it in resin.

It's honestly awesome, and I've had some great convos with them on there! During one they asked what people wanted them to focus more on and I said, "Oh! Please do more videos talking about the differences in resins and how to choose one!" Because that's one of the hardest, most expensive parts of the resin learning curve. Especially if you started a few years ago when there were less resources. But I still see very experienced casters make mistakes in resin choce all the time. And it's easy to do! Like, no shade to anyone who's learning, or even experienced, who's making these mistakes. The more we can proliferate the maker scene with knowledge, the better we can all be in our crafts!

When using foam (styrofoam mainly), you want to seal it before putting it into. Foam has a lot of air inside it, and it will absorb resin and gas out. You can use light wall filler or a fine resin layer before pouring the whole resin layer. But crazy work you did here ! So impressive !
@AaronAlso
@AaronAlso 2 жыл бұрын
I was just about to explain about the foam, any open cell foam will do this as the resin migrates into the voids the gas must escape. Not sure what caused the gas inclusion around the mermaid's hand, maybe the hollow space inside the 3d print? Either way a layer of UV resin painted on should seal it.

Awesome! The foam has gas/air in it and once it is encased in resin, that needs to be released, thus so many bubbles around your bridge. I've discovered this with many different items placed in resin. Sometimes you are able to pre-seal it with a layer of two of thin resin before placing it into a deep pour.

I like the mermaid bubble "mistake", but if it happens again, a tiny drill into the bubble, and a syringe of mixed resin squirted into it will make it much less noticable, and will often completely fix it. Great job!

Agree with everyone that the mermaid bubbles turned out pretty cool. When you mentioned using an FDM model, I thought immediately about the trapped air. Even with %100 fill, the layers are going to trap air and the material itself is hygroscopic. I wonder if your pour sequencing and the cure dynamics created a path of least resistance because it looks like the air was forced out of a weak spot in her hand after the top layers had solidified. In this case, it would be fascinating to have had a time lapse to watch that form, even though it is as close to 'watching paint dry' as you can get.

So the resin was too big of a pour and it heated up and warped the edges. Also the bridge was made by foam, foam is porous and why you had trapped air. The mermaid was suspended in the resin and could have shifted while it got hot making that weird bubble. Hope this helps on your next resin project

That unintended bubble around mermaid's hand looks cool. I don't know if it would work, but other people working with resin use a syringe (if the resin still soft) or drill a small hole (if the resin is hardened) and fill if with new resin so the mistake would disappear.

Even the bubbles seem to do what you want them to do!! They might creep out of the foam btw! You gotta seal it before you cast it. Oh and you dont need a mask for EP. There is nothing coming out that might harm you in any way. Not the educts not the product. Tip#2: Dont use 5 min Epoxy for EP casts. It turns yellow in a heartbeat and then you might see it sticking out. Tip#3: Keep the sun away. Even if you have use UV additive, its gonna turn green, then yellow with too much sunlight! For all you clearly non-chemist guys: Epoxy is NOT dangerous...unless you drink it. People pouring it on their floors for a cool and unique coating dont wear masks. They just move it around. Same for epoxy tables. Get your facts straight before spreading misinformatio!

I agree with you that she should have sealed the foam and the 3d print. Air gets trapped in all those little pores and eventually they will come out. I disagree with you on not wearing a mask for epoxy resin. Some are non-toxic, sure, but not all of them are non-toxic. For the ones that are non-toxic, you are good to go. But the ones that are toxic, are extremely toxic. Better to just wear a respirator to be safe. especially considering she does stuff like this on a regular basis. I'd rather she show extreme caution to her 1M subscribers. It's the right thing to encourage.

@@TechnoDewdrop First, that depends on the resin... that's why you read the labels... also, "extremely toxic"? Really?!? LOL Maybe if you try to eat it or smear it all over your body... There is a thing called a Safety Data Sheet that will describe *EXACTLY* what hazards are present. "Extremely Toxic", by definition, is classified as less than 50mg/kg.... you know what falls into that range? Nicotine... Caffeine is another "Highly Toxic" substance at 200mg/kg... She is using Glass Cast 3 as her resin, which actually presents a far greater "hazard" to exposed skin during the curing process than any respiratory distress. This means that only Gloves and eye protection is required/recommended. The next qualifying measure is duration of exposure... A few seconds or even minutes of exposure are not as potentially harmful as several hours. if you are going to spread "Fear" then at least get your facts right. Your words prove that you do **NOT** know what you are talking about and are yet another uninformed "Chicken Little"... leave the work and the crafting to the adults. Maybe go read up on the *Real* hidden killer, DHMO
