I played a Ranger/Scout with the relevant multiclass feat from Complete Adventurer. Those feats were bonkers! I think though, that if someone were to bring them back into 5e, they would have to be significantly changed. To update ascetic rogue, I'd do something like this (and this is probably still overpowered): *Ruthless Discipline* Prerequisites: Sneak Attack class feature; Martial Arts class feature; DEX 15, WIS 13 Increase your DEXterity or WISdom by +1. You now may add sneak attack damage to your unarmed strikes. IF you used an ability score increase from the Monk class to gain this feat, you also gain one sneak attack die. IF you used an ability score increase from the Rogue class to gain this feat, you also increase your Martial Arts die by one step (d4 to d6, d8 to d10, etc) And hey, let's make it a feat-tree! *The Way of 1,000 Moonless Nights* Prerequisite: Ruthless Discipline Increase your DEXterity or WISdom by +1. Increase your Ki pool by +3. You gain the following features: --Shadow Palm Technique: If you attacked with an Unarmed Strike as a part of an attack action and used your Step of the Wind feature to Disengage, you may spend 2 additional Ki points to perform the Hide action. --The Pain of Darkness: If you deal Sneak Attack damage and choose to follow-up with Flurry of Blows you may spend an additional Ki point to attempt to leave your enemy blinded by pain. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be blinded until the end of your next turn.

I noticed in 3.5/PF1 the game was full of "Oh no, you can't do that, you need a very specific feat to be able to do that" 5e is a lot more "Oh yeah you can do that, might have disadvantage but sure, give it a go" in 5e feats are overwhelmingly brand news things players would never think they'd be able to do, like Magic Initiate.
@slydoorkeeper47834 жыл бұрын
I house rule a bunch of stuff for PF1 (my favorite system so far, I haven't played 5e) and so if something seems reasonable to just do it without a feat (treating feats like skills you trained to do) then I'd say just do it.
@Treblaine4 жыл бұрын
@@slydoorkeeper4783 I gave up on PF1 as while I could figure it out, I could never get everyone else on the same page. Every time any player wanted to do anything I'd have to talk it through with them and "nope, can't do that, unless you have this feat" and a lot of people THOUGHT they knew the rules but they misremembered them and thought I was changing the game to screw them. What I found so frustrating about PF1 is the rules were pointless, they'd say "you can't do this, unless you cite this particular rule" well then why not just let people do it? It's not as if the rules were there to stop the players doing something that would be game breaking, the game clearly thought it was okay to attempt that thing... but only it you jumped through some hoops first. Also I LOVE the "bounded accuracy" of 5e which means AC doesn't massively change at higher levels. it became a mocking phrase at my table "add it aaaaaall up" because everyone had so many different bonuses, the roll didn't matter... the weird rules on stacking bonuses was what mattered.

What I absolutely cannot stand in PF1 is that even after all fixes and streamlinings Paizo did, it still was, at core, a D&D 3 game with all problems. And even though it's fun from time to time to deal JRPG amount of damage because of feats and stuff, I'm 100% glad I changed it at first to D&D 4 for more robust tactics and later to D&D 5 for simply being way easier to start playing it and spending more time actually playing game rather than having either over 9000 preparations (hi, D&D 3), or combat that takes about 8 hours to finish (hi, D&D 4). Cohort stuff should remain in the domain of roleplay. A character that levels up and gets a feat in the middle of a dungeon shouldn't just be able to have a servant all of a sudden. Stibbles Codex of Companions?
@theodorehunter47654 жыл бұрын
Eh. Roleplay should give you non-mechanical benefits. I'd consider having a side-kick as a mechanical benefit, unless said side kick just manages your gear or looks after your estate. Once your side kick starts helping you in combat, then it becomes something worth a feat. My biggest issue with mechanical rewards based on roleplay is that some players suck at roleplay, or just don't like that aspect of the game, and then they get punished for it by not getting all the cool toys the roleplayer gets. Also, some players' definition of "good roleplay" might not mesh with what the DM considers "good roleplay" and then you get into an instance where there is a large gap in versatility or power and the weaker player has no idea what you want him to do in order to close that gap. Granted, I would be okay handing out feats for free to mesh with someone's roleplay, but I would give EVERYONE a feat if that happened.

To each their own--I am not here to judge the way anyone wants to D&D--but for me this is recalling the main thing I did NOT like about 3.5: power creep. When the game became all about builds, mechanics, planning trees, and getting cohorts as additional chars, something was lost for me. It didn't feel like it was about story as much. Just my experience, but I prefer 5e, and actually kind of appreciate the simplicity. Far from being stale, I think the reasonable range of options has just moved choices in a different direction.

The way I always saw it was that 3.5 had the rules and info for enabling whatever I wanted to do through roleplay. Sure a munchkin could come in and min max to thier heart's content. Some were fixed to only 10 years which would rarely matter to an elf, but to a human or dragoonborn they could be very painful in combat. and there were those higher lvl spells that would throw you an age class higher no matter how many years that was. 10 - Ranged Pin: I think this should be a plain subset of the grapple action. It's a situational ability and really just adds depth to combat, which I want to see more of for the martial classes. 9 - Mercantile Background: As other commenters have recommended, it would serve better as a background. I personally really like Alex Belden's comment. 8 - Zen Archery: I don't like how it strictly applies to Druids, Monks, and Clerics, but I like its intent. I don't expect it to be useful for martials who use heavy armor, since they are usually maxing CON instead of DEX, so it wouldn't solve MAD. 7 - Leap Attack: I don't like it. Not one bit, even if it is flavorful. GWM does this but without risking attacks of opportunity. 6 - Shock Trooper: I like this. Being able to slam people into walls would be cool too. 5 - Energy Substitution: Nah. It's cool on paper, but in practice, Acid is the obvious best choice with Thunder as a close second, given that they are the elements which monsters are generally least resistant/immune to. It's just an illusion of choice/trap pick. Spell damage and monsters resistances and immunities are already so baked into the design of 5E that this seems like an ultimately harmful feature to add, as this bypasses the design of spells like Fireball or Cone of Cold, which are designed to deal profoundly good damage but are balanced by the many monsters resistant or immune to fire and/or cold damage. 4 - Leadership: It's interesting. It applies numbers and stats to what PCs can already technically do in game, so I'm unsure if this is really worth it. I would just adapt this to be an option rule. 3 - Obtain Familiar/Improved Familiar: I love it. 10/10. If Improved Familiar can apply if you already have the Find Familiar spell, then even better. 2 - Ascetic _____: Cool but also super specific with its requirements. 1 - Dragonwrought: That's a really cool racial feat. I love it.

for merchants background I would probably call it master merchant if I was to make it a feat. As for design for use most feats have two effects, one that is specific and one that is more general for this one I would say +1 to CHA or INT (ie appraisal of items). Then I would throw in a benefit where selling mundane and common items sell at 75%, and grant a bonus to the checks for buying and selling magic items. Buying at 75% might be harder to translate in just because a once a month structure is a little odd to see in 5e but perhaps maybe once per downtime period. So whenever the DM gives out downtime and limit it to mundane or common items so they aren't cutting the cost off of a powerful magical item.

One feat I didn't see in either video is Arcane Strike from Complete Warrior. The 3.5 version required a +4 BAB and ability to cast 3rd level arcane spells. The caster then gained a +1/spell level on each attack and a +1d4/spell level on damage. Incorporating this into 5e could be as simple as using your Bonus Action to gain advantage on your attacks and deal a +1d4/spell level on damage. If you don't want Eldritch Knight subclasses to have the advantage and extra damage for each attack, making it an Action on one attack could help the party balance. But I would recommend this just becomes closer to an arcane version of a Paladin's Divine Strike class feature.

For the multi-class feats, I'd probably look at multi-class spell-casting for inspiration. Half-casters are already a thing, that logic could easily apply here. Ascetic Monk would have three effects: Unarmed strikes can trigger sneak attack. You add half your monk level to your rogue level when determining your Sneak Attack dice. This stops the multi-class from running away with the game while still rewarding them for a fun flavour combo.

So I personally would like to see class specific feats so for example a fighter using their second wind would recharge their other short rest abilities instantly allowing them to use all of their fighter abilities one more time before they need to take a short rest which would really crank up the power of the fighter quite a bit
@NobodyDungeons4 жыл бұрын
So one feat I would add is a bunch of AOE feats for melee and archery play styles for example a perk that gave you an additional attack for killing an enemy then another for killing two enemies and so on this would obviously be limited by the increasing number of enemies required to have been killed and actually hitting and killing the enemy so a rogue might one shot an enemy, but would not be able to kill two more to get another extra attack while a fighter could kill a weakened enemy with one shot then kill another two enemies with 4 shots then hit another enemy with one shot

I'm thinking of doing some Multi-Class feat stuff in my homebrew Such as Second Wind, Lay on Hands, Ki etc. scaling with total levels from a various class GROUP EG. Second Wind scales on WARRIOR class levels (Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, Ranger, Monk) as well as Warrior subclasses (BladeSinger, War Domain, Hexblade), you still need to have a Fighter level to get Second Wind in the first place. It might be a bit unhinged but I'm not an expert at this stuff. BTW my homebrew intends to make everything more powerful than vanilla 5e, it basically scales differently while using 5e as the base

The thing is that people dont do Pact of the Chain because the one really good Invocation for it is only in UA. You could make your familars save DC is equal to your Warlock DC (I think it was called Boon of the Pact Keeper?). Which really helps the Chain Warlock. I played an espionage Rogue that used their familar to knock people unconscious cause Sprites and Imps do that. Typically your adding around +5 to the DC which really helps the consistancy. Really funny cause the main focus of that UA was a Talisman Pact.

(Not finished the video) I played a Pact of the Chain Warlock in a one-shot recently, and if your Familiar goes down, you are screwed. I even used the extra Chain Warlock invocations from the CFV UA, and it still felt really underpowered. I think a Feat to improve your Familiar in any way for more survivability would be a great thing, even for a Chain Warlock, which is already better than a base Find Familiar.
@Hey-Its-Dingo4 жыл бұрын
I'd also say give the Feat the ability to work with Beast Master Ranger as well, maybe it let's the Ranger cast Find Familiar to revive their Animal Companion if it dies? Like, Wizards can improve their Find Familiar beyond normal, the Chain Warlock has it improved beyond its base, and the Beast Master Ranger gets its own special use out of it. Idk, that might be too complex for 5e, but I think it'd be cool.

The ranged pin could be tacked onto the grappler feat. The feat isn't too powerful.
@abiggs48284 жыл бұрын
I can see this as a decent quick solution, but I kinda like them separate for flavor reasons. A Grappler wouldn't necessarily have the precise aim to pin someone to the wall by their clothes and vice versa. I like this as a quick and dirty fix, and it WOULD improve on the so-so Grappler Feat, but I think the skill sets to pull them off are pretty different. Now....a character with BOTH would be a battlefield control MONSTER.

@@watershipdowneyjr I don't think that's good from a balancing perspective as archers already have advantages over melee. The only thing I find to be weak in 5e is combat. Even when I put enviromental stuff, players try to find a safe spot to stand and just attack/cast and pass... I found an easy fix, I changed grapple, shove and trip, added back the charge mechanich (but it gives adv on the first attack instead of +2) and made flanking only give adv on the first attack, and if a flanking creature gets flanked everyone loses the benefits and deficits of flanking in that line. Also made Attacks of Oportunity harder to execute by leaving attack range to promote movement. It works pretty well! Combat actually moves around now, at least. Trying to charge, flank, lose the flank so repositioning to get it again, pushing someone out of flanking position so your ally gets the flanking bonus next turn... things are looking up.

10. Battle master manuever, make a ranged weapon attack and add a superiority die to the result. Enemy must make a contested grapple check (Athletics or Arcrobatics, their choice) against the result, if they fail the target is grappled. This'll allow fighters, the weapon focused class, with the battlefield controller subclass to have it, while opening it up to other classes through the Martial Adept feat, and if they're using the class variants UA through a fighting style. Would also like to see an addition to the arcane archer subclass to do something similar, like the arrow transmuting into a net mid shot. 9. Guild Artisan (Merchant) background change, can make a cha(persuasion) check vs opponent's insight to either buy one item for 75% of listed price, or instead sell one item for 75% of market price. If you succeed this feature cannot be used again on this npc for a week. 8. Slightly tweak the magic stone cantrip to work with other ranged weapons. Accessible through Magic Initiate: Druid, and add it to the cleric list. The only other classes that would really want it are ranger (and with the UA class feature's list they can grab a druid cantrip) and monk, and I'd be totally okay giving it as a freebie to 4 elements monk. 7. Just use the charger feat. Jumping counts as movement, you get a +5 to damage, can stack with greatweapon master. Maybe add a line onto the feat about using a dash in this manner increases your jump length by your Str modifier (so it'll be 2x strength mod feet of movement). 6. Mechanically you can already shove in any direction, and the extra distance is already wrapped into the charger feat. The last part is spiritually the same as the barbarian's reckless attack. Adv to hit hit enemy (roughly +5 to be hit, for +5 to hit). So, mechanically, it's GWM and reckless attack combined, which is a go-to combo for many barbarians. 5. Honestly I would love for Sorcs to get it through metamagic, as well as rolling it into the Elemental Adept feat. Something along the lines of as a reaction 1+Spellcasting mod times/long rest you can substitute all damage of one of the listed elemental types to the element you specialized in. Example: Elemental Adept Cold, you can use a reaction to change all the damage of a fireball into cold damage, which'll stack with your ability to treat 1s as 2s. Add some fluff text about using your reflexes to transmute the arcane energy of the spell into another form, that way it's limited and has a cost so you can't counterspell/shield, so they're not abusing the free damage bump. Metamagic version would not cost the reaction, as it's an innate part of their being, and costs sorc points. Keep in mind, feats are a lot more costly in 5e than 3.5, giving up an ASI and waiting 4 levels instead of every other level. 4. Any player can have hirelings out of the PHB. The stronger cohorts, like peagasi I feel are more in the realm of a paladin's greater steed, the ranger's animal companion, and several caster's summons. The main issue bringing it into 5e is that action economy and bounded accuracy are much more central to design, so a 3 level weaker NPC is still a lot closer to a pc in power than in 3.5. Especially since magic items are more of a secondary buff, not considered a standard part of progression, you don't have the extra burden of equiping your cohorts. 3. Hesitant to give an entire subclass as a feat. As you mentioned, it's already pretty much covered through warlock and Magic initiate: Wizard. 2. I think the whole rational behind subclasses is this feat. For example, and Eldritch Knight continues to gain their full fighter abilities while getting a slowed progression in their spells. For the ascetic rogue, it sounds similar to the way of the shadows, but could be it's own rogue subclass like the rogue: Ninja. At level three you gain the ability to use unarmed strikes with dexterity. They are considered light, finesse, and deal 1d4 damage, which improves based on your unarmed strike table. 1. The sideeffects of aging just sounds like justifying ability scores. Yes, my wizard is older, and sagely, therefore I will put his con lower, and his Int higher. If you want to play a character that doesn't suffer from it, put your ability scores in a way that reflects that. As for eliminating the humanoid subtype, iirc there was an interview with Jeremy crawford stating the balance issues with that, which is why many of the UA races like minotaurs and centaurs got the monster and the humanoid subtypes. The ability to unlock dragon wings and scales sounds like it was wrapped up in the dragonborn race, with the dragonhide feat selection, and I would be totally down for more variation between the races. I dislike that V. human is my go-to for most builds, and the elven accuracy gives a counterweight to that. As for a kobold specific feat, might I suggest one that gives +3 int (to undo the heavy penalties, as well as make it a "half feat" boost) , gaining the dragon subtype, the 13+dex AC from dragonborns, and small wings that reduce fall damage at low levels, but by level 11 give a small fly speed of 20'.

Love the channel! Keep up the great work. I just wanted to add that 3.x was a different type of game in almost all respects and 5E is much easier, less complex, and is more balanced. For instance: Dragons in 3.x had 12 age categories from wyrmling to great wyrm which gained strength as they grew older. Humanoids have 3 and as was stated, physical stats weakened and mental stats increased as they aged. A kobold with the dragon wrought feat lost the humanoid type and became a full dragon. Dragons stats increase as they age, and no stat penalties for aging which humanoids do. 1200 years max age? essentially ageless. I miss the 3.5 ability to customize also.

Dude, #1 make sure you take care of yourself. Sounds like you have your hands more than full. So thanks for taking the time to plough through the many 3.5 feats for us 💜👍 5e has been short on character options from the get go, and a huge reason for that is how they handled feats. Never liked it, beginning to hate it. Personally I would love it if feats and ASI's were linked to character level instead of class level again, and it wasn't a choice you had to make. Doesn't need to be as many feats as in 3e, but more than in 5e and at least more regular. ASI at every 4 lvls, and a feat at say lvl 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20. Then throw in a couple of feats like you mentioned to choose from, and we get to make some choices during a character's career. Best of luck with your floor and all that.

I agree with you. I'd probably also break up each of the existing feats into 2 smaller feats (or just erase the stat bump from the feat). Some of the feats are REALLY strong. As it stands, I give my players a bonus feat at level 1. I have seen numerous character builds struggle until level 4 because they NEED a feat to work properly. I like these kinds of videos a lot. Converting stuff from older editions to give more options is a great idea. My only qualm is that some of the videos you've done for these seem a little scattered. I know you're having some personal issues with household appliances atm, and that you work full time and have a family, so balancing things can be hard. That being said, I think these types of videos would be better if you took some time before hand to look at the fears and make some bullet points about how best to convert them rather then just "spit balling" them as you go. Other then that, great video and keep up the good videos.

Side note, the familiar concept could just expand the list of familiars by making the familiar able to be a CR no greater than half the player's level, and a small selection of familiars of 1/2 through 10 CR. Additionally, there could be a feat if you multiclass into another class, you grow with it, though at a slower pace. For the rogue example, maybe gain sneak attack dice equal to (half?) your proficiency.

Ranged Pin: Since the Martial Adept feat exists, your cleric an still get this if if becomes a maneuver for battlemasters. And then you can make the DC 10+superiority die Energy Substitution: I disagree. The only reason why this is a feat in 3.5 is that all metamagic has been feats. Thus it should be a sorcerer metamagic now. (Or a feat with the prerequisite that you have the metamagic feature)
