I met Mr Nimoy in 1980 in the Sioux Falls Down Holiday Inn where I was a Bellman. I had been dispatched to the airport to retrieve his wife and bring her to the hotel! As I carried her luggage into the suite Mr Nimoy was seated at a desk and turned to thank me! If I hadn’t known ahead of time whom I was sent to pick up I probably would’ve been awestruck!!

That slip and stutter in The Wrath of Kahn is a great example of Shatner's underrated acting ability; He couldn't have played it any better, showing a grieving Kirk who is fighting, as Admiral, to keep composed. Great scene.
@kitcat75384 жыл бұрын
Shatner's acting ability is indeed much underrated. He can say anything with his face alone -- in Spock's death scene, his childlike expression of helplessness and despair is the emotional heart of it. William Shatner was a member of the National Repertory Theatre in Ottawa. He acted in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. He was Christopher Plummer's understudy in Henry V on Broadway. He is a superb actor. Accounts of the making of Star Trek mention the fact that Shatner's classical training made it easy for him to try out alternate readings of the same line.
@comatoo7 ай бұрын
Look up Walter Koenig's defense of Shatner's acting ability - I found it quite moving. Something else to look up is his excellent re-do of Kirk's death on Jimmy Kimmel - he improves it very well. Finally, his reaction to his son's death in Search For Spock - chokes me up.

I was never a Star Trek fan and never watched the show but Mr. Nimoy was the very first person to host Ripples Believe it or not, and he had such a captivation voice you couldn't help but watch it. Then I watched him on re-runs of Mission Impossible and even in that he was fantastic. Then it was just after the release of the third Star Trek film search for Spock and yes that one I saw, I meet him in a air port just out side of Colorado springs and I remember he came up to me and said, "you look sad is something wrong" at the time I was sixteen, I said I am waiting on my Dad he is a Sargent in the Army and he is late" , and he literally talked my ear off but the guy was so smart he would blow your mind. So he asked me if I knew who he was and I said yeah you used to be on Mission Impossible and he had this big smile and told me I was also on Star Trek. And I said something that had him laughing so hard I though he would fall out of his chair, I said "Star Track what is that some racing movie?", he started laughing at me and then I saw the move poster for Star Trek III on the side of a bus and I had this sinking feeling of stupidity roll over me. He said "Don't worry about it you made my day, what is your name since you already know mine", I said my name and my father finally got there and thanked him for keeping me company and he thanked my dad for his service to this country. The man was one of a kind and his will always be missed.

@Centurian HATED Enterprise -- watched it through once and never watched an episode a second time. It is in every way a regression and a disappointment from the first second when, instead of the beautiful, sweeping orchestral music one associates with TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, there is an absolutely ghastly, cringe-making song about aspiration over the opening credits. The three previous shows are ensemble shows with a huge variety of interesting characters. Enterprise focuses entirely on one invincible captain and one boring Vulcan. The sets are dark and dull, the costumes are drab, the scripts are boilerplate sci-fi. The thing is a prequel, so there is no sense of facing an unknown future: they are boldly going where everyone has been before. And the prequel tries to change for its own convenience principles established in previous series, so you don't know where you are anymore. All the wonderful worlds created by previous series and all the fascinating species we have come to know -- Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans, Changelings, Vorta, Jem'Hadar, Bajorans, Breen, all the species Voyager met in the Delta Quadrant -- are gone; it's a wretched prequel and no one has met them yet. We never learn what happened after Voyager returned to Earth and the Dominion War ended. And the acting is awful! WIlliam Shatner and Patrick Stewart came from the Shakespearean stage. Actors like René Auberjonois, Nana Visitor, Avery Brooks, and Kate Mulgrew had years of stage experience. These people knew how to act and they knew how to be part of an ensemble. The acting in Enterprise is just wooden. Of course, Enterprise is better than JunkTrek -- better than Discovery, better than Picard, better than Strange New Worlds will be -- but JunkTrek consists of the worst television ever made. Compared to the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, Enterprise is a huge disappointment.

No, that was Kirk's line. You're getting confused. Spock's line was, "Use the force, Luke" Remember, after Spock helped Gilligan get off of Fantasy Island, they both worked at the bank with Mr. Drysdale and Mrs. Hathaway.

His was one of the voices that made me want to be a voice actor. I used to watch "In Search Of..." just to listen to his voice.

I’m sure, as a serious AC-tor, he never imagined what would come from playing an alien in 3 seasons of some random TV show. But what an influence and legacy he has left, a role like that is something the vast majority of actors never even come close to. He became a cultural icon, if you flash that hand sign at virtually any American, they’ll know exactly what you mean. I’m sure he never imagined during the filming of the show that he would be a beloved character for generations to come. Star Trek was already cancelled way before I was born, even as a Gen Xer, but I grew up watching the reruns, my mom took me to the movies, I still watch the original series now and then. Star Trek lives on to this day, and Leonard Nimoy is a huge reason why.

This was such an informative and cool video. To finally find out how spock's hand gesture came about was really cool. Leonard was always one of my favorite actors. From mission impossible to Colombo to star trek. Great interview ! May Leonard rest in peace. He will always Live long and prosper.

To his credit, knowing what a die-hard fan I was, a long-ago boyfriend surprised me with tickets to see Leonard Nimoy in "The King and I", late summer of 1974. As it was "theater in the round", the cast would exit between acts by going up the aisles. Since my seat was on the aisle, as I applauded with gusto, imagine my big thrill when Leonard Nimoy walked right by, briefly making eye contact with a little nod and smile, as he did. I was just another face in the crowd but it was a gracious gesture, which I never forgot. I was also pleased that, for just a minute, in a small way, I'd been able to convey my appreciation to him, not only for this performance but for so many others I'd enjoyed, over the years. Nimoy did appear in many shows after ST, from Mission Impossible to the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and tons of other TV, movie and stage productions, not to mention his directorial accomplishments. As he said, he was never out of work, after ST. However, he also appeared in a great many shows before ST! If you keep your eyes peeled, you'll see him pop up in any number of different parts, from war stories to Sea Hunt to a myriad of westerns like Rawhide, as both cowboys and Indians. (Side note..McCoy (D. Kelley) had a well-established background in westerns, too, typically playing some bad guy. Since Roddenberry wrote many western scripts, it's said this was how they first met. Evidently, when he had some down time from his scenes on ST, Kelley would mosey over to whatever Paramount set was filming a western, his "first love", and just hang out.) To this day, I can't believe what an impact this low-budget, three-year series has had on so many lives, for so many decades. It literally created a culture of its own, while continuing to expand into everyday life, in so many unexpected and significant ways. We've been privileged to enjoy the amazing talents of so many extraordinary actors, writers and other artists, all integral components of the ST universe, yet unique and inspirational on their own, as well. As we are so quickly losing so many, may we offer our greatest thanks for all they've given us..not the least of which is a brighter picture of our future..and hope we'll meet again one day, in the next galaxy!

The original Star Trek was a groundbreaking brilliantly written series that could almost be pinned as evolutionary . The episode Leonard Nimoy refers to with the half white and the other half black races , with the captivating actor Frank Gorshin was nominated for an Emmy award . You've got to keep in mind that in 1966 the Black man was just emerging from years of subjugation , this episode brought home how ridiculous racism had become and for America to evolve the colored races had to be recognized . I enjoyed this video and it brings back a time of innocence not just mine but the worlds it was feeling it's wings , and looking in wonder at what the future would bring . When you heard William Shatners voice open each episode with , " These are the Voyages of the Star Ship Enterprise , on its Mission to go Where no Man Has Gone Before " . And then the most beautiful space craft in all of science fiction rolls out and blasts away . Thanks Mr. Nimoy , you'll live forever .

Exactly! This is why I love TOS so much and find the subsequent versions to be quite 'meh'. The recent films got tackier and tackier :/ TOS was revolutionary because it was the 1960s and they were the first to have a smart and classy black lady lieutenant! And TV's first interracial kiss! And all that 'technology' they already thought of decades before we had them today (despite the fact that the set was pretty low-tech haha)! And Spock's quotes that can amazingly be relevant to a lot of political situations, or life in general :)

@@JiFan There were a lot of morality plays in their series. I thought the characters were colorful and the sets were cheesy. The people who produced the shows showed a deep understanding of what entertainment and storytelling is.

Amazing to hear talk about the emotional ties of the characters played on trek. It wasnt just acting but instead you get the feeling it truly was heartfelt. Amazing to be in a character that deeply and appeared they were. Nimoy went on to host a series I liked a lot "In search of" which only lasted 3 years.
