I've been rewatching a lot of Scooby Doo lately, as an adult, and also as an artist, and I just keep having to pause to admire the background art. It's always wild to me, how much detail is it into the background of certain animations, and yet how little time we spend focused on those scenes and environment.

When I think of my childhood, this specific Scooby Doo series will always be a part of it. No other Scooby Doo series after this one is up to par. Point blank. And that’s probably the exact sentiment behind, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Yeah they were probably paid a decent wage, but I’m sure they weren’t getting rich (with the time period here being LATE 60s and then into the 70s, for this show specifically) still said “fuck it, lets spend a week or so on this extremely brief scene, or still shot that’ll only be seen for seconds”
@Haley_Halo

The funny thing about "only for a few seconds" is that while it is only a few seconds within an episode, it is a few seconds for millions of people every time they see it throughout decades and generations falling in love with the show... and it wouldn't be what is without them.

The focus is on background artists for an old kids cartoon but we’re still seeing artists being exploited and undercredited for work that may not even be made available or stay available to the public. Now studio heads are trying to write creatives out of the equation entirely. So thank you for bringing attention to these artists and to this long time problem in entertainment, and great video!
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 28 күн бұрын
This is because you're mistaking studio heads for creatives and studio for being art houses. In both cases, they're only interested in one thing, making money and cartoons/art just happens to be the way the make their money. As a result, they're going to do whatever they can to save money in order to maximize their profits. If you want pretty much just ofr art's sake then you have to look at the small indie studios, but you're not likely to get rich and famous by working at an indie studio. Well, you're not likely to get rich and famous at a major studio as a creative either but you'll likely have better pay, a more stable job, and better benefits.

It was definitely creepy. I remember discussing one episode at school the next day with my friends, "that one was freaky wasn’t it?" "Yeah, my brother was screaming when the girl turned into a vampire." I don’t think anyone had nightmares, but there were certainly moments that creeped us out.
@darkness988
@darkness988 Ай бұрын
There's distinctly one moment in an episode where like a black suit of armor comes to life that scares the shit out of me as a kid and gave me nightmares as like a 4-5y/o. Then, I believe it was a movie. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets mentioned in this video but I haven't finished it yet. Anyway, the plot has to do with zombies. Zombie pirates specifically maybe? The scene where they become animated and come to life fucked me up at maybe 7 or so years old. Like seared into my little mind how horrifying the imagery was for my underdeveloped mind. It was right up there with the original Resident Evil game when the first zombie you encounter turns around. Particularly on PS. The gray skin on the face is just so uncanny and unsettling. I mean, a lot of little details are, but that's the most overwhelming and apparent one. And I experienced even both back to back around the same time/age. Which, even when I see the zombie in question in RE1, even as an adult, my first thought is always "Oh, I totally see how that fucking horrified me as a kid." Can't speak on the Scooby Doo stuff as I haven't seen it since. Maybe I'd think it's silly now. Granted, however, as someone else mentioned, I myself was also something of a more sensitive kid than others. I got diagnosed as autistic not long ago and that helps explain why I've always been the sort of lonely creative sensitive kid. So my experience definitely may not be universal. Then again, on the other hand, my friend growing up was scared of Mickey Mouse. Come to think of it, so was my sister for some reason.. I could never figure out what's even remotely fear inducing about that, but different people are different I guess.

The long-awaited Scoob background art episode! I'm glad you were able to finish this, I know how long you've been working on it and I've been looking forward to it since you first mentioned it. I want to note that it is never 'silly' to get heavy while talking about children's cartoons- Art is art, regardless of it's medium, and it all has a story to tell. Sometimes that story is light and fun, and often that story is not just deep but heavy, painful, and heart wrenching. It's just as important to look into both of those sides of the coin, regardless of its intended audience, when it was released or created, or whether it's considered 'background' or not. These artists, who created and carried so much of the atmosphere of a cartoon that shaped and changed millions of childhoods, deserve to have their names spoken, and remembered. Thank you, for doing so, so that we may hold space, at least for a moment, for their legacy, lives, and passion.

I recall, vividly, getting up early on a Saturday morning, pouring a bowl of cereal with too much sugar and plopping down in front of the tube (on the floor, of course) to watch Scooby-Doo like a worship service. Daphne was so hot! And, as the video relates, the background art was seminal to my concept of spooky. Purples, water-colored clouds, no straight lines, a flash of yellow or orange in the dark. Dude, you did AMAZING on this video. A fun, engaging watch with good notes, and even better points. I've always loved when folks make a note to point out some more easily missed details... Especially ones like these that are so briefly seen, and more and more lost to time every single year. Preserving art, visual or otherwise, is important. Preserving the memory of the people who worked on them is even moreso, in my opinion. So, from an overly-sentimental world builder? Thank you for ensuring that some artists are much more likely to be remembered. Nobody deserves to be forgotten. Kind of gives me the same feeling of melancholy that I get when I read through old fairy tales... Yeah, we have a written record of stories that were passed around only verbally for years beforehand. That's a wonderful thing, and I'm glad that we have them! Many of them are staples in animation, funny enough... But honestly... It leaves me feeling a bit sad that the origins of these stories are lost to time. I mean honestly, they are likely DRASTICALLY different from the originals... And we never knew, and will never know, who made the stories first. (Btw, if you DID happen to read this far? give The Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was a read, if you can tolerate the very VERY wordy phrases and nonsensical story beats... Shockingly engaging, and honestly the ending got me to ACTUALLY laugh)

He appears in Umbrella Academy S2 too, and Lee Harvey Oswald appears in Inside Job. Both Netflix shows have episodes about JFK assassination and conspiracies sorrounding it. Also a random thing to comment.

They should have had a Scooby-Doo story investigating the JFK assassination, but as soon as they go to pull off the mask the screen goes black and states 'Information to be released in 100 years.'

This is exactly who I thought of but also with a further animation connection; There's a few episodes (one episode with multiple references) of King Of The Hill where Dale Gribble brings up Jack Ruby in conversation.

Scooby Doo, Where Are You? were aired right about mid-morning during Saturdays from where I was as a kid. So I associated the shows "creepy" presentations to warm, lazy, relaxing moments right before lunch time.

Heck yeah. At 5 or 6 years old I would get up plenty early to see the Saturday morning cartoons. And in those days most cartoons featured characters trying to do harm to each other. Scooby was pretty mild in that milieu.

Thank you. Parent 45yo. My oldest turns 14yo next week, and they are a budding artist. They also really enjoyed the more recent scooby doo, the one with Patrick Warburton voicing the sheriff. I will be watching this video again with them tonight. I want to give them a perspective that art isn’t just a hobby that you have to drop to take a desk job; that art can be a job itself.

I was always so fascinated with the backgrounds of Scooby-Doo when I was a kid. They all really were their own unique characters and were perfect for setting the vibe of the show. It's a shame the names of the artists have begun to fade, but I greatly appreciate, especially as an artist myself, your passion for recognizing their names and efforts. Wonderful video, as always :)

It's also amazing to learn that, outside of Gary Niblett, season 1 and 2 have a completely different animation staff. That's always fascinating when I'm poring over credits, seeing how similar or how different its creator composition was to the previous work, or if it has a similar lineup to a completely different work.

"Too dark"? "Too scary"? What? I remember watching this at 4 and didn't find it scary. I always just laughed at Shaggy and Scooby anticts, and it was always some dork in a mask. I later went on to love the Twilight Zone and Xfiles as I got older, like 10 years old. Courage the Cowardly Dog and Grim Adventures were my favorite cartoons as a kid.

I'm so glad you did a video on this. I grew up in the 80's watching Scooby-Doo every chance I got. Specifically because I loved the background art. It was so effective at conveying fear and sometimes was really highly detailed. I thought I was the only one who loved it more than the characters.

Thank you so much for devoting a video to the hard work of people who largely go unnoticed! We are the keepers of each other’s memory, through blood relation or choosing to remember, whether we realize it or not. The fact that people sat down and got to do this as a trade should be remembered, as all tradesfolk should be remembered.

I grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s and Scooby Doo was a staple of my childhood. I remember when I was about 9 or 10 my mother and father were commissioned to bake and decorate a scooby doo themed cake. They knocked it out of the park! The background is what made the cake. The same greens, blues and stark blacks really made it feel like it was one of the Hana Barbera episodes. Definitely one of the fond memories of my childhood and I am grateful to have such creative and artistic parents. I have done a good amount of artwork myself and I want to do more. Thanks for doing this episode and showcasing the artists that helped so many people grow up with fond memories of these works of art that are so under appreciated.

People always say that Scooby Doo is formulaic, silly, goofy, barely scary. But while it is formulaic and silly, there is a sense of daring adventure in every episode. While the ghosts aren't real (usually) the danger is. The villains are dangerous desperate people. Even as a kid, I saw the creativity of the traps, the creativity of the villains' ploys. Most of the old show's tricks were realistically credible, stuff you'll see in Disney's haunted mansions or other horror movies, and if you're running for your life, you could miss the man behind the illusion and even if Velma saw the trick, the danger of losing your head might still be real.
