Nerdy Gurdy Basic : How to finish the wheel!

In this video we will show you how to finish the wheel
on your self-built Nerdy Gurdy or Nerdy Gurdy Basic!
One of the most important bits on the hurdy gurdy is the wheel. In order to get a smooth and consistent sound, you will need to finish the wheel so that it runs as true as possible.
When you bought a pre-built Nerdy Gurdy Basic directly from Nerdy Gurdy,
we have already finished the wheel for you. You do not need to do this yourself.
The video shows you how to:
- scrape the wheel
- sand away the last wood fibres and edges
- add rosin and cotton
- Adjust string pressure
What you need:
- Your self-built Nerdy Gurdy or Nerdy Gurdy Basic with the wheel already mounted
- A strap
- Proper lights
- A sharp, single sided or Stanley blade
- 600 - 800 grit sandpaper
- Vacuum cleaner
For the second part you will need:
- violin / viola rosin
- lint free cotton cloth
- strings
- cotton / viscose fibres

What happens if you make the wheel face rounded, so it had a smaller contact with the strings?

The instrument will sound weaker with less grip on the strings and much less control over the trompette coups.

Thank you for the beautiful and thorough instruction. I am not quite there yet, and wondered if you could help me get closer. I am building a 6.3 It seems that either the moulded insert for the rod is slightly off axis, or the drilled hole for the rod has been slightly off axis. This results in about 2-3 mm wobble on the wheel, when mounted and turned. Do you have any suggestions on what to do about this? How will it affect the playing if there is a wobble of that scale? I hope you can give me a hint, since I would not like to make a bad decision at this place. Thank you again for the time and effort you put into making gurdys available for us - Andreas

The inserts can be troublesome, best to print a few of the wheel core inserts until you have one that is completely straight. There needs to be a nut against the wheel core, the helps to stabilise the wheel core. 2-3 mm is far too much, get a few spare cores and try again.

If you buy a pre built Nerdy Gurdy Basic directly, this already has been done by us. All of them are built, finished, setup, adjusted and played before shipping. When you purchase a DIY kit you will need to do all that by yourself.

I used this to true the wheel on my 6.3. It is very true but my strings were all high and I had to do a lot of work to get them down. I didn’t take off as much as this. Is this video only for NG basic?

This method works for both the Basic and the regular Nerdy.

Thanks. I also set my blade into a scraper which helped me keep the angles consistent
