Fun fact to display how true to science this show is, the creators explained how ships that would experience high G´s, such as military vessels like the roci, would need the pilot to be able to literally do everything with only using his voice or moving the tips of his fingers, since moving your hands or arms in double digit G´s is what one might call unpleasant, hence why the essential controls are that small and close together near where his hand would normally rest. It´s really that level of attention to detail that makes this show feel so special.

It honestly keeps getting better for a while! I think the argument can even be made that every season is better than the last, though my favorite seasons tend to waver as I rewatch. But I think there’s pretty universal consensus that Season 1 is one of the lesser seasons so as incredible as it was, the standards are high. Season… 3 and 5 seem to be pretty broad favorites? Really though, they are all so good.

A little tip for the future...don't look at the OPA as a cohesive entity like Mars or Earth. Think of it like different tribes/factions with the same origin and similar grievances. There is always an effort for unification by a few individuals ( like Dawes ) but it's not as easy.

Much like a lot of movements and broad groups borne of a shared oppression/having been under essentially colonial rule for generations. A hugely complicated mix of dependence, resentment, indifference, and many different people having many different ideas of how to deal with it. Cynically working within/around the system skimming off bribes/theft/etc, direct opposition, quasi political bodies trying to have a legitimate role in broader politics and trying to be moderate/more peaceful… and those that want direct confrontation and violence.

Actually, that thing Alex was using that you thought is a volume nob, is a 3D navigation device from a company called 3DConnexion. They make a joy-stick type device, that accurately tracks how much you tilt it, either side to side or back and forth (that is, pitch or roll), and how much you twist it (yaw), it also tracks how much you push and pull it lineally, either side to side, back or forth, or up or down. In other words, it tracks in 6 degrees of freedom. I actually use that exact device to do 3D modeling in SketchUp. Because of the 6 DoF, it actually makes perfect sense to use as a tool for maneuvering a ship, as you would want to control it on all of those vectors.
@RocketSurgn_
@RocketSurgn_ Жыл бұрын
Also, he’s using it for the thrusters/fairly fine adjustments there so it makes sense to be a different form factor than some bigger more typical joystick. In some other scenes, when maneuvering in combat (though maybe also just later season set changes?) they use more typical joysticks (but 2 of them to have the full 6 deferred of freedom control).

There is no "dialogue for dialogue's sake" in this show. Always remember that. You just don't know (yet) why this dialogue is there. I think the Tac Team is a contracted team. A team from Earth wouldn't make it in time, so it had to be people that lived on Eros.
@RocketSurgn_
@RocketSurgn_ Жыл бұрын
Yyyyeah…. I mean in this world of so much influence Earth and Mars exert on the belt, and it essentially being a Cold War with the Belt caught in between, I’d think they would both have at least some real covert operations folks embedded in/near Eros. So I’ve always been… underwhelmed at the “black ops team”… but I mostly wish Errinright didn’t call them a “black ops” team vs maybe “local assets” or something. They clearly aren’t professionals on a great power special operations team level!
@cameronvincent3122
@cameronvincent3122 Жыл бұрын
@@RocketSurgn_ I can't recall how long the cold war is, though. If it's been a long time then the embedded teams are still going to basically be belters. Unless they're training and shipping a new team out every decade on the off chance something happens in Eros of all place. Seems unlikely to me.

@@cameronvincent3122 Things like that have always been accomplished (in part) with “diplomatic” posts, or corporate positions that rotate in from away. There are plenty of earthcorp interests, and probably plenty among the clearly Earth “influenced” station administration to have at least a handler or 2 there to manage. But I don’t disagree that for the actual assassination attempt it makes sense to be belters. Mostly just a quibble at calling them a black ops team being too grand of a term, Hah.
@cameronvincent3122

It's what makes the end of season 2, in my mind, less fun than the book version of the same moments (Avasarala and our as-yet unrevealed martian) being in a far worse position than they are in the book, as for the show it's a season finale, while in the book, it's a mid-book bit of showing off for just how clever Avasarala is.

Book 1 is covered in the first season and the first few episodes of season 2. So while the season finale is pretty good, it won't answer everything covered in the first book. It is cool how it works out because the show shifts fundamentally after the end of Book 1 in the middle of season 2. Every scene in the episodes are not wasted or are filler scenes. Scenes like those with Chrisjen Avasarala on Earth may seem like charity scenes for the character, but they are not. For example, there was a scene from the last episode (or the one before) where Errinwright told Avasarala that Earth has a spy on Tycho Station. That was the guy with the bionic eye (or perhaps it a smart contact lens.)

Without getting into any spoiler areas, just as a general information (which should be visible in the series already, and was accessible in the book by this point): OPA is not an unified organization with singular governing authority. Just like Belters in general, it's more a haggle of independent groups with the same primary goal ("Freedom/power to the Belt"), led by individuals that can have sometimes significantly different visions of what it specifically means and how to achieve it. For example, of those you have already seen, Fred Johnson's faction is not the same as Anderson Dawes' group, despite both being OPA.

I really appreciate that both of you pay attention and follow the story well - it can be frustrating watching reactors who miss important details (for whatever reason) and then they spend the rest of the video asking questions that they were given the answer to but they missed it. Nerdy... you've mentioned "network television" in several reactions and I think it's important to note that A) the phrase "network television" historically doesn't refer to Cable TV networks (but I understand the point you're making), and B) Syfy only paid for cable broadcast rights to the show in the USA and had basically no input into its content - the show was made by Alcon Entertainment and Sony Television. Nothing in the show is throw-away just to fill time - you'll figure that out as you watch more of the show - but they might be making decisions about the timing of certain scenes in order to fit the contractually obligated time-limit. I'll be curious if you feel that way in a few episodes.

I think one important thing to realise with The Expanse is, that none of the big factions are a monolithic block with everyone working for the exact same thing. Earth is governed by the UN but has quite a few people in powerful position that might have varying objectives, similar for Mars. As for the Belt: only part of Belters support the OPA and the OPA itself is made up of a bunch of different factions that aren't lead by a single person. Fred Johnson is the leader of one OPA faction so to say, Anderson Dawes for example is another OPA leader.

The Expanse was originally written to be an RPG. Right now there is a kickstarter for a comic book written to continue the story set between books 6 and 7, and it's raked in millions of dollars. The word is it was to demo another story to build out the franchise, because both Apple and HBO are interesting in continuing it, but not books 7-9.

The Mormons are not just bumbling around. They are headed toward a likely habitable system and planet though it is not certain of course. But you haven't seen enough of Earth yet to understand their motivation. The situation Holden's family is in as another outlier is the first of many hints. Amos'... Amosness... is another hint.

Nerdy: "The mormons have to have some purpose in this show..." Mansplainer 2099: "FUNCTION. FUNCTION in this show. "Purpose" is a myth, it's always been a myth. I want to bash my head into my desk every time I see people making this mistake."

Another commenter did say this, but I'll reiterate. The next two episodes are a 2-parter of a single story, old Doctor Who Doomsday, Army of Ghosts style. But even more tied together.

It does not matter how much "new-age tech" the Anubis has, it was just ground zero for a tactical nuclear warhead. All that is left of that ship (and the asteroid it was anchored to) is expanding gas and high-energy particles.

The death of Avarsarela's friend which is being ruled as suicide is actually a VERY important plot point and will have consequences down the line. Actually, we don't know who the tac-team is, we are simply assuming that they are Earthers (actually they are locals who have been contracted by Errinwright.)

Alex does a good job of explaining the order of events this episode when they are on the Anubis. And, then you'll get even more answers next episode. :) But so far, some of your guesses are pretty good. Not quite exactly right, but solid thinking.

Yeah.... I don't want to spoil anything but James SA Corey as an author is actually 2 guys, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. They both have major ties with Game of Thrones and George RR Martin - writing for the TV show, Ty Franck was George RR Martin's assistant, etc... So think more GoT and less Mormon.

Good job with your explanation of Julie’s mission, just one correction: It wasn’t Fred Johnson that sent Julie on the Scopuli to investigate the Anubis, it was Anderson Dawes. This show is so damn good… so not to spoil anything, just saying… this virus thing, just when you think you know what it is, you don’t. That’s the whole fun of The Expanse.

Fred did supply the ship to Dawes, but he didn’t know the mission or the crew (just the code name “Lionel Polanski”).
