Can this only be done using porcelain? Or stoneware clay can also be used for making something like this?

you can use any type of clay, porcelain is often used because of how easy it is to tint with mason stains (and some nerikomi artists also use its translucency), white stoneware will work fine though, you can also use any type of red/brown stoneware but your color options will obviously be more limited, you can also mix and match clay bodies if the shrinkage works well together
