As a tech guy, even I am perplexed with modern TVs. And honestly, anything with "Smart" in the name, bar for maybe phones, is needlessly difficult to use. You should not have to jump through a single hoop in order to use a device you purchased to perform a task that its designed to do. No accounts. No loading screens. No downloads. No network connection. No menus. Just plug the damn thing in, press the button and go.

Floppy disks (or sometimes called diskettes) were the ancestors of the USB thumb drives. 90's kids put their Diablo 1 & 2 save files there to play LAN with friends on computer shops. The common floppy disks were just 1.44 MB!

It was like years later after moving to US I thought back and figure out wtf system it was based of the games I remember playing.

@@Dracobyte Most CDs weren't writable, and even most people with PCs only had read-only CD drives, but floppy disks were generally writable, and you could keep files on them like you would a flash drive or an SD card. Most likely Diablo the game came on a CD, but you could keep a save file on a floppy disk like how Gamecube games kept save data on SD cards.

@ShenanigansExtraordinaires 8 ай бұрын
@@muphrid7799 You're right. The game came out on three CDs actually, and wouldn't have fit on a floppy disk. I still have mine, in fact. The Diablo II install CD was 555.6MB by itself, with the Play CD at 610.5MB and the Cinematics CD at 443.8MB. This is for the original version 1.0 of D2. The save files were single digit to a few dozen KB in size. A floppy was more than large enough to carry several characters worth of save data.

I'm old enough to remember: Windows '98, rewinding rented VHS tapes before returning them to Blockbusters, the horrible noise of dial-up internet, when NSYNC and Backstreet Boys were ridiculously popular, the Furby craze, listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Hootie And The Blowfish, and hearing AOL's iconic "You've got mail".

This intrigued me so I quickly checked some of the softwares on my computer. Turns out most of them don't have an icon for save function. You can either save directionly with ctrl+s, or you can go into the dropdown menus and there is no icon. The only ones that I can find using floppy disk as save button are Microsoft Office and Microsoft paint. So I suspect that even though it has become a meme that everybody knows/not know save button is a floppy disk, this is not an industry wise practice at all. Only Microsoft use that representation, and since these days Microsoft Office is not the defacto word processing/slide show/spreadsheet software anymore, a lot of people probably have never seen this button. For example, google doc doesn't use floppy disk as save icon, they use something else. And even though I can't confirm this because I don't have a mac, I suspect that Apple probably use something else as well. P.S. Missed opportunity to talk about that Netflix used to be a movie rental company there.
@sikthehedgehog
@sikthehedgehog 8 ай бұрын
In more recent times the trend has been towards moving away from using the floppy disk as a save icon _because_ it turned into a meme of being something too old for new users to know about. Though the overall trend nowadays is to autosave altogether (especially the on-line stuff).

I remember we had to fiddle with it a lot for a few years, then either the TV stations got better broadcasting or we hit the perfect angle, because at a certain point we never had to move it again. As far as not gaming on the living room TV, it was probably more my mom didn't want the clutter of the console and games being there, or having to ask me to turn it off so they could watch things, etc. My mom was kinda unreasonable that way, where our house was always "too messy" to invite friends over to play, but it was fine for me to go to everyone elses house... who were all way messier than our house.
