These roofers are having both skilled hands and an impressive amount of patience... They show us how people should work at low speed and without stress to get a perfect result. That's the exact opposite of how 'modern' people work nowadays...everyone is always in a hurry, why we don't know exactly, and the result is badly executed work that will never last over centuries as it used to be.

It’s a real treat to watch masters at work. I’m obsessed with how well they observe, measure, observe, measure - to get it just right. That’s quality workmanship ❤. 😊. I’m not a builder or an artisan but I have helped a tiny bit with Habitat for Humanity home building…& I do consider that repairs must be made as the government requires it to be historically accurate as possible. This leads me to my question: since it wouldn’t be seen and it may help prevent future water damage- why no “flashing paper” laid before the tiles go on? Just my curiosity as usual. Thank you so much for your time. Have a blessed day ❤from Texas 🥰

Excellent update! Question: why arent screws used to install roof tiles. Seems like nails will loosen over time. Thnx
3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question. Essentially, different fasteners (nails, screws, bolts) for different purposes. Nails are excellent for roof fastening and sometimes for sheathing due to the type of stress and pressure placed on these types of joins. The nails are made of copper which will resist weathering and rust for an extraordinarily long period of time. We're thrilled you're following our journey.

At the risk of wanting to peer into your private business. You have been totally occupied with Purnon for 2 1/2 years, you could surely not still be living on previous savings and assets, could you? I know you won a massive financial award from Monuments Historiques, for the build, but how do you manage? Your KZbin following is not very large, and I don’t know how well your Patreon is going but I think that is for the build isn’t it? You could not have enough time or energy left to work remotely at something could you? I cannot think that you have an easy time covering your everyday costs, clothing medical food etc. I hope you are both enjoying life outside of Purnon, from time to time! 🌹🇦🇺 Proud of you.

Thanks for your question Kate. Purnon is our home - we live here full-time and work full-time on the chateau restoration. We have committed our life savings to the project. We have been generously supported by the French Government (including receiving the Mission Stephane Bern). We have received several philanthropic grants. And we fundraise - we've released a book called 'Chateau Reawakening', we give the discarded slate tiles off Purnon's roof a second life as boxed drink coasters. Our KZbin channel supports us, as does our growing band of Patreon supporters. All of this will not be enough to save Chateau de Purnon, but we will restore as much as we can in our life time. We are committed to respecting heritage at every step - through the materials we use, the techniques deployed by the artisans and the presentation of the history of this wonderful place. It's exhausting but we love it. And we are proud to share the skills of our amazing artisans with a global audience.

What is amazing about this restoration is the level of detail and craftsmanship that is being employed to bring this into authentic preservation. It would be so easy to "cheat" and to "chinese" this by employing foam and faux stone covering. When I was watching this my head was spinning on the cost of the stonework AND the hourly fee of the crane to get the items to the roof. First rate job! And the roof work watch each touch of the tile being precise in shaping and nailing is stunning.

They use a special hammer shaped a little like an ice pick that has various applications (it cuts, pierces, extracts like a claw etc). The pointed end is perfect for creating the holes to receive the nails without shattering the slate... but be warned... you must strike the slate tile in exactly the right way! Therein lies the skill. Thank you for your message and for following our journey!

It looked like on the back of the first cornerstone that was laid into place, there was an Australian convict arrow. In Australia, convict bricks were marked in a number of ways but the most well-known is the broad arrow imprint - the same shape that was printed on convict uniforms. When I say ‘convict’ in Australia we mean from 1788 to the 1850's, the (mostly) British and Irish criminals transported to the penal colonies down under. I assume it is not this marking, but if not, I am interesting to understand what it was for?
3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question and for following our journey. The new stones that are being placed on Chateau de Purnon's facades have all been recently quarried. The divots and markings on the non-visible faces of the stone pieces are made by the stonemasons for 'keying up' the stone. These abrasions act as receptacles for the mortar to ensure are much stronger grip.

Sometime, when you have a chance, please say how the walls are engineered? Looks like the load of the new stonework is passed right down the corner column to the foundation. 👍 But the frame is wood? So had they gotten better at framing strength by 1780? Or is the wall just not tall enough to be a problem? There are lots of windows, and I'm thinking about flying buttresses in old cathedrals. Maybe it's as simple as the fact that there are interior supporting frames, whereas a cathedral was a huge open shell inside, for grandeur and light... and vast vaults... I'm always blown away by how long ago people solved these monumental structure challenges. Hence my questions. Oh! I see in your video #14 about the architect... the roof structure maybe is more weight-efficient than before. I'm trying to see the technical evolution in my head. The Bourgeois guy is, himself, using an arch technique developed two hundred years (?) before the 1781 design of Purnon? That would surely reduce the load in the exterior walls. ...but I'm now thinking about the cumulative load on the lowest stones in those stacked corners... I don’t want to assume anything. I'm curious about the engineering at about the time the US was getting its independence, and only about 50 years after Isaac Newton. 🤔

When the outside of the Château is finished, could these KZbin shorts be made into an episodic venture? Tim could give us the ongoing history, which is fascinating. He could instruct us on how much labor, pulleys, etc. would have had to be employed to get a cornerstone lifted, for instance, when it can be done in less than a day now. For your non-metric folks, could measurements be termed, "this is 5 meters--that's just over 16 feet?" It would be more enjoyable if instant visualization could take place instead of stopping, getting out the calculator. Also, am enthralled with your workmen and their discourse-get Tim to tell us how long they’ve had to train to learn what they are doing. In this last episode, I recognized the cornerstone from last week-it could be merged with this week’s offering to show how the stone was shaped. Keep up the great work-it looks fantastic!

Is there any record of how the original builders got the stones up? What you've done is astonishing but the mind boggles at the achievement of those long-dead artisans who built the thing in the first place.

Would someone please describe how these huge stones were installed when the chateau was originally built? Maybe some kind of hoist system? How many men would it take to pull it up? Maybe they used horses to pull? I'm clueless but curious.

Can’t help but wonder why the corner stones deteriorated and the field did not? JIM ❤
3 ай бұрын
The corner stones deteriorated because a zinc guttering system was installed on the ledge above them at the end of the 19th Century. This damaged the stone work and allowed water to seep in, weakening the huge corner stones. We're not sure what you mean by 'the field'?
