Wearing Jason's mother's sweater makes your counselor take less damage when Jason hits you. In regard to lighting the fireplaces, on Day 1, Using Mark, wander around the camp for awhile, collecting potions and lighting all the fireplaces. In one of the cabins in the camp, you should find a letter saying "You will find a torch in one of the cabins by the lake". Once you find that letter, go into the trail that circles the lake. Look in one of the two big cabins, you will find the torch there.

Until now, I never knew that you could fight Jason's mother on all three days with different rewards. As a result, I never knew the sweater was a thing, and, while I'd heard rumors of the existence of the pitchfork, it was written off back then as just a myth. Friday the 13th was among the most brutally difficult games on the NES, and, without the trusty Game Genie, I rarely made it past the first day, let alone the third. The music in this game is so nostalgic; the perfect blend of 8-bit quirkiness and a haunting (albeit absurdly quickly looping) charm that lent heaps to the atmosphere and tension that came with wandering the wilderness, exploring dark cabins, and knowing that Jason could be hiding just around the next corner. And then there's the perfectly executed music stab during the encounters that incites that sense of panic, and the accompanying music that follows that reinforces that you're fighting for your survival.

The game contains five songs composed by Hirohiko Takayama of Xexyz fame. Most of the songs are short loops that only last a few seconds, which can get annoying after extensive play. LJN may not have allowed Hirohiko enough time to compose better music. The music does add a haunting feel to the game. According to Hirohiko, the main instrument was supposed to be a pipe organ. To make the game's music, Hirohiko wrote the music in assembly on MS-DOS, using a sound driver by Tsukasa Masuko.

ATLUS, the ones tasked with coding this for Acclaim Entertainment's LJN sub-label, could have easily just had them localize and bring over Megami Tensei, all considered. The first-person cabin areas in this game play almost like those early games. The side-scrolling parts are what hurt this game. I got this the same day as the NES console for my 8th birthday in 1989. This actually was a pretty creepy game. It's not great. At all. But there's some strange alchemy going on here that makes it a pretty memorable thing anyway. That music is a MAJOR ear worm. And the sound effects are just everything I remember about 8 bit. I cannot believe people are still talking about this game in any capacity more than 30 years later. That blows my mind. Think about this game from the perspective of an 80s kid. There was no internet or any quick way to find out what new games there were. No phones to instantly look it up. You just happened across new shit at the video store constantly without having any clue about it. And when an NES game with freakin JASON on the front popped up...that was wild. It became something we had to at least try. And in a weird way...it was like we, who were not QUITE old enough to be allowed by our parents to watch the movies (although you better believe we snuck around doing that shit lol...like kids have forever...it was just harder back then)...it was like we were pulling a fast one on the folks. Sadly...no boobs in the game. Not that we ever really expected that. Not even in the dark ages of the 80s..

This game is essentially one of the very first Survival Horror games, back before Sweet Home (which was released in December of the same year of this game's release, and never saw release at all in the US) and Resident Evil. Your job is to kill Jason Voorhees and keep your counselors and the kids in their care alive. If you fail to stop Jason from killing either of them, it's Game Over. And killing Jason is not the end, because to beat the game, you'll need to take him down no fewer than three times.

It's a pretty typical summer at Crystal Lake. There's a group of happy children staying in the Camp. You and your six camp counselor friends are watching over the kids while enjoying the lake and the wilderness. The days are bright and sunny. The nights are cool and clear. And Jason is on a rampage. It's up to you to stop him, but it's not going to be easy. You must first fight your way through forests filled with man-eating wolves, caves covered with blood-sucking bats and hordes of mindless zombies everywhere you turn. You must also help any friend who is in danger, or else you can just kiss them goodbye. And hiding in a cabin or staying adrift in a canoe won't keep you safe--Jason will find you anywhere. The only way to survive this summer is to challenge Jason face to face and destroy him. Take care and stay safe. The object of the game is simple, you must stay alive long enough to find a way to defeat Jason once and for all. To do this requires nerves of steel as you explore Crystal Lake Campground, encountering its many hidden dangers, and searching for the weapons and other items you will need to accomplish your fearful task. Friday the 13th is made up of three kinds of screens. The map screen shows the location of the counselors during the game. The side view screen is used when exploring outside and the interior screen is used when exploring inside a room. You switch back and forth between the 6 different counselors as you explore and battle your way around the cabins and trails of Crystal Lake. You have to find and equip the counselors with weapons and other power items you find along the way. Once you gather enough, you can turn the tables on Jason and begin to hunt him.
