I actually like this game in small doses, like once every year or two. I used to watch my dad play it as a kid, so there's a sentimental attachment to it. Somehow, my dad knew everything about it, and I used to cheer him on. Then way later I revisited it and beat it. It's a good feeling. I want to LP it soon.

but game mechanics is still hideous for an early game, I mean, who tf thinks random lightning outside of the castle when you jump into a new level entrance is a good thing for players? this small design is even big threat for players

I don't remember exactly how old I was when I beat this, but I was between 9 and 13. My friends and I spent many weekends, and almost an entire summer figuring it out. I didn't know about the continue code until I read the comments for this video. I'm glad I didn't! Beating it was one of my greatest gaming achievements!

Finally I found this fame. This one game is the only game I were not able to beat in my youth. Considering I didn't know English at 5 years old. So everything were error and trial. Took way long...Made me mad a bit... However, in this madness I were able to find a salvation... If you tilt NES cartridge just a bit, thus 2/3 inserted, slanted, the separation of rocks will glitch and open up between floors. You can just jump to upper levels. I got to top level with just boots, but never were able to get to green room to finalize the mission. I got my closure some 25 years later. Thanks. :)

this is another one of the long list of games that I had that I could never get to the end. at least now I can go to my grave having seen someone else play these games. Excellent playthrough! I loved the hell out of this 8-bit black sheep as a kid. I did have that Nintendo Power hint for getting past the first floor, but I figured out most everything else through 4 months of stubbornness. You are far better at it than I ever was - I had to abuse the unlimited continues and farm health before the tougher bosses. Thanks for the nostalgia!

Honestly, it's less a matter of patience, and more of a matter of free time. With how little free time I get these days, I need to make some careful picks with what game I can afford to spend some time with. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was a great pick, for instance! This one? Probably not.

@Mike14264
@Mike14264 2 ай бұрын
@@Balisades if only Milton's wasn't as cryptic as even the original Metroid... but I wouldn't be surprised if it was at the same level of enjoyment as Milon's Secret Castle for some people. With enough patience, Metroid 1 would've been perfectly fine as a game by modern standards if it wasn't for the fact it's so stingy with health and ammo. Games at the time had ways to recover health instantaneously to compensate for all the health upgrades you get, why not Metroid? It's really the main thing that prevents me from replaying it more often. For a non-linear game, it's too restrictive with how you should approach it. Milon here on the other hand takes the design approach of optional secrets in games that you can't find without trial and error and even more patience, and makes them mandatory. Not occasionally, like how Metroid and Zelda do, but consistently through the whole thing. Cus that's fun, ain't it? Spending time you could be using doing anything else, playing any other admittedly more exciting game, sweeping the level screen until you find the one block that does a thing. It's not even that annoying or frustrating, that would actually be a more interesting experience. It's just tedious and boring. And I'd rather have fun or feel anything else, than be bored.
@LchanOtakudom
@LchanOtakudom 10 жыл бұрын
Oh geez... You can't just hit a block that disappears head on, you have to hit it so sickeningly specific or nothing happens..! Such an anal retentive game! I'm with the Nerd on this, this game is cryptic and demented. Thanks for playing it though, I'm impressed you had the patience to do so, honest! This game should be renamed Daryl's Demented Dungeon, or Shoot Your Bubbles Right or You get Nothing Land.
@Krebons1200

This game would have been great if there were clues in-game and not 'one of these 800-ish blocks is hiding a door, shoot it to progress'. Cryptic clues makes you think, no clues at all IS button mashing (or lucky guesses). This game is trial/error until you've memorized it. It doesn't make you think. Star Ocean, Aladdin, Chrono Cross, Castlevania Simons Quest & Earthbound (among others) made you think. This game takes time, memory and less brain power than counting your cash when you bought it.
@Mike14264
@Mike14264 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's one a those design philosophies that works well with optional goodies and secrets... ...not so much if it's absolutely mandatory. It's a time waster to try and give more value to the game by trial and error. It's cheap.

Why did the guy playing the game wait until the second floor before getting the bee, powering up the bee shield, and grabbing an umbrella for rapid fire? All of that helps a ton in this game. I get that stuff in the first room, and hang onto that bee shield for as long as possible.

I express my thanks to MrPopsicle43 for playing the game. I enjoy Milon's Secret Castle and was joyous when I reached the second row of the castle myself before stopping. My only complaint was the creatures reappeared too quickly and I did not know how to reach the room with the money before this video. I have my late brother's copy, so if I have the time I may play again to see if I can reach the final area of the game. That will be good if this game will be recreated, as Milon's Secret Castle is fun and have potential.

A really weird game, I hated it when I first tried it as a kid. The aesthetic was compelling however, and perhaps out of boredom I picked it up again sometime not too much later.. got COMPLETELY sucked in, something was just really good about this otherwise aggravating game. I remember getting all the way up to the final boss, before finally reaching the end of my patience and throwing in the towel at the eleventh hour (bah, this was also the case for me with TMNT, Contra III, Sonic 2, Tyson's Punch Out, a couple of other games as well) - bah! A giant F.U. to this game. Came here just to see the end of the most frustrating NES rental of my childhood. There's challenging, and then there's bullshit. This game was tediously shooting every single block, every single empty space, jumping into every single empty space, trying to push every single block (which takes several seconds each before you know if it's pushable or not), and then doing it all over again in every room every time you got a new item because you didn't know which arbitrary trigger changed something (having to get spring shoes before the first boss would appear). It was the most bullshit "jump to hit every single empty space then pray" platformer since Super Pitfall. And THAT'S the ending you got? For challenging puzzle adventure games that were actually fun (and fair), The Adventures of Lolo and Solomon's Key showed you how it was done.

When you need a Nintendo Power magazine just to know how to properly play the game and how to get continues, you know you played something way too cryptic for a game. And this was from the people behind Bomberman and the original Mario Party games (1 all the way to DS)

The only flaw in my opinion of this game is this, it is extremaly random. Everything is a secret and you don't have an idea of what to do or where to go. Really.. who the hell would figure out how to beat this game? The sound, music and gameplay is okay.. the only thing that really fuck this game is those insane secrets and if you die, you can't continue unless you know the code, What is ironically ANOTHER secret in the game. It is on my list of games that "It could be perfected" Just like they did with Castlevania: Simon's Quest.. Who knows AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) will know what i am talking about.

I'm with the nerd on this one I played this game back in the day if I hadn't seen what to do in that first room by watching a Game Players strategy tape I probably wouldn't have been able to get any further

I used to play this when I was about 10 years old and I never got to the skeleton boss because I never knew you had to kill those Princess Raven things... I guess I was pretty close - but I never saw that end board which has a strange Nazi Motif going on

Still can’t believe that this game is on the 3DS Eshop especially when this game called Milon’s Secret Castle is so tedious, frustrating, difficult, and hard to play!!!

I wouldn't even mind the game if it wasn't just so time consuming to find anything the first time around. Kids back then had all the time in the world. Meanwhile, I barely have any time at all, or at least it feels like that. And I feel like I'd need to have a _ton_ of time to kill in order to actually choose Milon's Secret Castle of all things as a game to waste my time with. I mean, it's probably not even as bad as most folks say, but... this one? Really? Out of everything else out there, even from the same year of release? I guess spending time to find a new secret could be seen as therapeutic? That's about it really, and I feel like all the other platforming challenges around that whole endeavor kinda kill that vibe. Well, y'know what, I decided to give the game a shot. Without having seen this video. Got stuck in the first floor after managing to find _most_ hidden things. I knew about Music Boxes, so I bopped under some blocks until I found one. I shot tiles until a honeycomb was revealed, not hard to find. Accidentally realized how bees are meant to be found, a bit bull, but still, a less crucial item anyways. Despite the deaths and restarts, the learning process was going somewhat well, even if some of those things were completely accidental, but still, relatively fair stuff so far. Things were going smoothly until I found the exits to both rooms... and suddenly, I had nothing else to do. Turns out I could _push_ blocks. Pushing a block has a bit of a delay to it, so it's not something I'd stumble onto, because I don't think I'd ever stay running against a single block for more than half a second while trying to get somewhere, I'm not a minger. I found out about this crucial mechanic by a guide. Crucial because it's how shops can be hidden apparently, which not only have hints, but always have a necessary item. ...anyways, besides all that, jumping around and defeating enemies ain't that bad. The controls are a bit greasy, Milon takes a while before gaining some acceleration, but I've played worse. I just wish the game had a better way of teaching you those sorta mechanics. Not even the arrangement of blocks on top of the second room of the first floor, which lets you shoot them until one of the solid blocks is isolated, would be enough to show me that I should push it, and I don't think there's any reason to think otherwise. Maybe if they formed an incomplete ladder or something? A recognizable block formation that you could complete by pushing the lone block towards it, so that you would think about at least trying it. Regardless, knowing now at least one more hidden mechanic, maybe I'll have some more fun with it.
