The Game & Watch "Squish" featured similarities to this. On the top screen, a fuzzball character would point random directions. On the lower screen, the obstacles (sort of a maze) would move that direction. The goal was to avoid being squished against the side.

Actually, due to Nintendo of America's strict policies against the use of religious icons in games, it was not released in North America. It is Shigeru Miyamoto's first console-only game after a legacy of arcade development, and his only game to not be localized to North America.

Don't get me wrong, they had good intentions of video game handling, it's just that I felt sorry for them being paranoid and gullible just because Atari almost killed the video game industry back in the 80s. I didn't think content in the Japanese version was offensive to Americans, it's just that they didn't how bad too much Americanization was back in the day. Don't get me wrong, we were hard to understand, and that's why we didn't realize that not all content in the Japanese version was offensive to children.

They didnt ban it per se. Nintendo of America wouldnt publish it because of the religious references, its hard to change the game map because of the cross in the map. Back in 1984, there was no ESRB (not until 1994), and because of Nintendo of America locking out the NES (a chip inside of the NES and a matching chip inside of a game cartridge) so that Nintendo had to manufacture every game cartridge (unlike Japan who had several companies manufacture their own custom cartridges), they had standards for which a game could be released, and they followed those standards, even for their own games. Back just before this game was released (in 1982), The Ninth District circuit court in the United States of America ruled that allowed games to be published and developed for consoles that did NOT have to be from the same game manufacturer as the console (Aka. Atari Vs. Activision), so a whole of bunch of companies with little programming experience were making games (mostly for the Atari 2600), as well as companies making games that were pornographic (and the video game console manufacturer was getting blamed for the game being on the console, not the company making the game). The video game market crashed near the end of 1983 and a whole bunch of companies went out of business and no retailer in the United States wanted to sell video games due to the massive amount of games in discount bins, only Nintendo of America was even interested in having a video game console at the time (and it was difficult getting shelf space in retail stores), they wanted to allow game development companies onto their consoles, but under very strict rules and religious content wasnt allowed, since this game has religious content, it couldnt be released under the Nintendo of America guidelines. Im surprised that Nintendo hasnt put it on the virtual console now that Nintendo of Americas guidelines have been relaxed as a result of competition and the ESRB taking over with rating guidelines, as far as I know, only an ESRB rating of Adults only (AO) is forbidden on a Nintendo game console (all video game console companies have this rule).

@@scottythegreat1 Hearing all of this, it's no wonder I was envious of Japan. Nintendo of America made those strict policies just because they were scared of causing another video game crash. They didn't have to force video games to stay true to social norms and it's not fair they had to do that. I'm glad Nintendo of America got over their paranoia because I couldn't stand strict censoring because I didn't find any content in the Japanese version offensive. I know I can't change the past but I'm mad everything first localized to American children had to stay true to social norms. I'm not envious of Japan anymore, but it's not fair all games had to be censored back then just because the majority of the games played in America back then were done by little children. I'm grateful for what I get, it's just that it's not fair American children had to deal with video games being true to social norms unlike Japan and Europe. It may be the reverse of what Japan has now, but I'm happy Americanization has faded into obscurity.

Just made it to level 5 in this game. Previously I thought you had a finite amount of fireballs you could use in each round, now I realize it’s infinite but only if you’re carrying a cross. I wish you didn’t stop after only 10 levels, but maybe the difficulty doesn’t get any higher.

This is a Nintendo-published clone of Namco's Pac-Man game. Perhaps the NTSC cancellation of the game (due to Nintendo policy there) put an end to such Pac-Man clones. It should be noted that Atari (Namco's exclusive NTSC licensee) didn't delisted all physical copies of the game, as it was created after video game crash of 1983.
