Yeah, all games released in the PAL countries had this issue (with a few exceptions) and it was like that until the first HDMI consoles were released. SEGA, Nintendo, Playstation everything. You just had to put up with it or modify your console. I don't remember being bothered by it as a kid and no-one I knew were either, but then again we had never played the games at their proper speed.

I actually played a slowed version of Contra on my Pegasus as a kid. It was an amalgam - it had slower gameplay and music, but it was pretty much American version of Contra. So I have a soft spot for slower soundtrack. It still works, IMO.

Essentially an exact duplicate of Contra but machines instead of people, for the European market. Plays the same, though if the game appears slow, it's because PAL runs at 50Hz instead of NTSC's 60Hz; running a PAL game at NTSC speed results in a modest slowdown. As for the reskin, not just the NES is affected, but all ports and even the Arcade version iirc is reskinned.
