You are a great park ranger by video, just promoting what you know about the forest. You have that natural teacher presence. I like when you smile and laugh at the camera, your nature love comes across. I'll hike with ya anytime neighbor, i like old train trails in PA too.

I love these vicarious wilderness adventures you take us on. And you got it figured out too, hiking along a creek yields more interesting finds than hiking along an established trail.

Cool, I grew up near there (Bucks County) and used to go to Hickory Run often, camping and hiking around.. this brings me back and reminds me of the woods I grew up in (Tyler State Park). If you haven't been to Ralph Stover SP you should check it out, very cool (but keep the kids close, there are some serious cliffs there!)

So it seems no one really wants to say how long they live but some estimates of 75 years by someone. Seems like the age limiting factor is fire other than that just continue to grow. The one you saw is older than that I'm sure. I've counted over a 100 rings in small, 2 inch diameter ones. Up to 50 inch circumference and a reported 600 lb burl have been found, maybe can get up to 35 - 40 ft tall. They are awesome no matter what!

I've not saw that black and white newt ever, that's cool. Nice roots too, I'm always admiring the one's that are on the pedestal like that. Seems they had a way different life from most trees and I like not normal. I am going to find out how long "they" say mnt. laurel live I know the other tree lifespans that are given are just averages and a specimen in the right place can live a lot longer than what they say. For sure Hemlock can live that long there used to be some here that we huge, like 8 ft across. The forest service here cut them all down after they died and just wasted the wood by letting it rot. 100's of 1000's of ft of lumber. Almost still makes me sick thinking of wasting all that resource after it took hundreds of years to grow. People do some lousy sh*t. I know of some laurel that have to be over 300 years from comparing them to ones that I have counted the rings in but I'll look and see what google says just so I know the "facts". Can you eat those little rubbery yellow thingys?

@jeffphillips73 Luckily the hemlock here looked healthy. Sadly my grandmothers hemlocks are being affected by those buggy things. We cannot afford to lose such a stellar tree. Not in my lifetime, no way!

@@PACreekWalker I'm so sorry to hear that I hate those things please god don't let what's happened here hit there. It could but I hope not, that's terrible news and I feel so bad hearing it I am almost ready to cry for how much it will hurt your feelings if it does. Not every tree here died but over a ten year timeline a LOT like 90 % did over a large, multi state area. I've lost 3 arrowhead hunting sites in 2 months, 1 got washed away by the flood, 1 is being graded for what looks to be a construction site and they dumped the damn fill miles away on another one to fill it up to the road level. My really good friend and business partner got killed in a mudslide that day Helene came through, she was a very special person and I am not just saying that to be nice. With the flooding and huge losses from that, something has to give. It just seems harder and harder to keep a good face on, as I am equal pessimistic and optimistic, the good doesn't seem to be outweighing for the moment. I feel like I woke up one day into crazy land and now I'm stuck in it like groundhog day. Jeez, I sound like Debbie Downer on your nice channel, my apologies. Thank you for the nice, calm videos and I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

@jeffphillips73 😮🤯 wow I had no idea the issue with the trees was so severe. Your poor friend, that's so scary. The news stopped reporting the Helene damage ages ago. Tiktok is the only place reporting whats happening in those poor towns. People are pleading on Tiktok for the world to not forget about them. Im hearing awful things about the government refusing aide and stopping outsiders from providing aide. I just hope all the kids that are displaced stay warm and that everyone can stand their ground
@jeffphillips732 ай бұрын
@@PACreekWalker Yes it sucks about the hemlock it has been devastating to the forests here. Without seeing it for yourself no one could believe some of the damage here form Helene. At least 11 people died in my county. 3 of which I knew but JJ being the most hurtful to me, as we were really close. We are practically the epicenter of it all. The Black mountains which contain Mt. Michell, the tallest in the east, separate Burnsville from Asheville. I was thinking to myself when you were showing the mountains at your grandmothers those are just hills and ridges. though the one view across the swamp I think looks like a pretty good hill. Not downplaying your mountains at all, please don't take it like that. We have actual huge mountains like 5000 ft. all over and Mitchell is about 7000 ft. It was reported over 30 inches of rain fell on the mountain and all the water funneled into the Toe and Cane river here, and the Swannanoa and French broad there. It's really bad in some areas apparently there are over 1000 kids without a home just in Asheville. There are still some that don't have power or landline phones here. The locals are amazing, country boys came out of the woodwork so to speak and within days had cleared roads and used their own equipment to get access for everyone. Then the national guard and FEMA moved in and it went downhill from there. One of my friends had 500 gallons of K1 seized that they were taking to needy folks and another was arrested and did 24 hrs in jail for taking 26 tetanus shots out to 1 of the fire departments, they said he resisted an officer. I could tell you stories for a week. FEMA is ran by kindergartners and you know what I'm referring to since you are around kids. It is the most unprofessional group I have every seen, exactly what I would expect from the government. Even after 2 months very few people have had any luck with them as far as getting any help. I tried applying because the foundation, an about 8 ft tall unfinished basement , of my moms house caved in. The website crashed as I was trying and locked me out. I then called the #, 3 hrs and 9 minutes on hold. I received 2 refusal emails a few days later. Went to the local setup they had here and reapplied. I got 3 emails this time, turned down, seems the inspector told them I withdrew the application. Reapplied; the inspector, a different one, came out but nothing after weeks so... The rivers were so natural looking after the flood, with islands, sand beaches and huge rock bars now they are destroyed. My shorts titled the destruction of cane river and the 1 billion $ ditch shows them now. They have absolutely destroyed the river with huge heavy equipment, and I mean huge and lots of it, and it is now just a mega ditch and looks stupid. I saw a family on the news that lost everything they are living in a carport with tarps around it and FEMA gave them $4000 just enough to buy a used car. It's really sad to see some of the stuff that's going on. Some people have no damage and others lost everything. I feel somewhere in the middle luckily I didn't have all my eggs in 1 basket so I only lost half of my stuff but that still hurt bad. I do appreciate your interest and your replies, along with the videos you are doing they have really helped for me to see that things are normal somewhere and give a little hope that it will get better, thanks again

@jeffphillips73 I did not realize the mountains were so impressive there. I don't understand how people are supposed to just take being treated in that way. Like animals. There is so much taxpayers money being sent to non taxpayers. All that money being shipped out elsewhere surely should be enough to get these citizens' lives back to some normalcy
