I know it's early days for Retro Game Forge, but one request I would like to make [and it may already be in there for all I know] is the ability to actually choose from and use all eight of the different background modes available on SNES. This is one of the most important ways of being able to open up all the special capabilities of the system properly--and it's what differentiates it most from every other system of that era--be it using anywhere from one to four proper overlapping fullscreen background layers, the high-res 512x448i mode, 8-pixel wide column scrolling, color colour math for blending layers and creating cool transparency effects, displaying high colour 8bpp images, Mode 7 background scaling and rotation, etc. A few things I always want to use in my SNES game ideas is all the background modes (I'm especially interested in Mode 0 right now), the transparency effects, the layer and tile priorities, the up four main sprite priority levels, using HDMA for things like row/line scrolling or to change things like the backdrop colour on each scanline, and [colour] window/shape masks. And I'd love to see all of those options plus the most popular Mode 7 capability added into the tool for SNES eventually [if they're not already there or already planned]. I'm really looking forward to seeing just what you guys can deliver here when it comes to enabling future SNES indie/homebrew development to a whole bunch of budding developers, and I wish you all the best and will continue to provide any helpful feedback and suggestions I can to make this the best tool for SNES indie/homebrew development out there. Assuming this works as expected--and if I can make even basic SNES games and save them out as files that can be played both on SNES emulators and physical SNES game cartridges then it's already ticking the most important box for me--you have at least one new Retro Game Forge customer right here. :)

The Scorpion Engine doesn't support Super Nintendo, which is pretty unfortunate given it's a retro console that was/is more popular than pretty much every other retro system from the 16-bit generation and prior, with only the NES being more popular at the time (although the SNES Mini outsold the NES Mini by some bit in modern times and sold more than all the other Mini consoles combined).
@BlulesBlue3 ай бұрын
@@inceptional I didn't said it supported, I said it's like scorpion because of the multi system support for development, btw the popularity of a console was very region based, there were places in Europe and south America where other consoles were way popular than the SNES, it's a region thing

Like will we be able to create our own NES or custom game console of that era that we can also mass produce I think that would be unique if everybody can just make their own game console or portable device handheld that play your physical games like the gameboy giving the old a chance to comeback with a new face! So you'll be able to make your own custom hardware and even cartridges for it that will play as if you were playing at NES game but in your own custom-made hardware system! This will be legendary for years to come and Open a new Pandora box

Finally, it looks like we're getting new indie/homebrew SNES development out there for all budding SNES developers to jump in and start making games. @TheNew8bitHeroes3 ай бұрын
You mean the "Alastair Low" system? ;-) MAYBE. But..that has complications with the way things are handled right now. Still, much more possible with this setup than with the former, honestly, for a few solid reasons. More to come over time. And no timeline. I'm sure there will be a limited beta level release for some alpha current NM users to check it out but there is still a bit of time before that. Also, I'm sure some people will DISLIKE some features just because they're different from what they've been using for 5 years, but I hope once they start to play they're like "Ok, damn, this is awesome...". haha. I want as many moments of THAT as possible!

I hope SNES is just the beginning, being able to port a complete or work in progress NESMaker project to SNES Maker needs to be seamless, if not in this version then hopefully a future version.
@inceptional3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm hoping the SNES stuff really gets as much love as possible. Ideally, it would be possible to do pretty much anything the SNES is capable of with the final version of the tool, including using all the lesser known features and such (Mode 0, 512x448i resolution, direct colour, colour windows, etc), and even porting across games that were originally made with NES specs in mind should probably be a possibility given the SNES is ultimately just a NES multiplied by whatever factor. It should even be possible to translate all the art across pretty much directly to the SNES' Mode 0, which is kinda ideal for NES graphics as far as I can see. Fingers crossed the SNES part of the tool really does get full attention. I want to be able to make all my SNES ideas in such a tool eventually. :)
@realjoecracker3 ай бұрын
@@inceptional I would be interested in Mode 7 and the SuperFX chip both 1 and 2. Recently Bethesda and Id Software announced a new SNES version of Doom that uses what they call the SuperFX 3 chip and the guy who worked on it has released his data for the FX 3 chip online for anyone to use. I’m sure once the both original FX chips have been integrated into SNES Maker the FX 3 chip won’t be so far behind.
@inceptional3 ай бұрын
@@realjoecracker I don't think they'll be adding any support for add-on chips into SNESmaker (actually Retro Game Forge) to be honest. But as long as they cover all the stock SNES features eventually, that will be great. The other stuff will probably be for ROM hackers and such to implement in their own projects I'd expect. Mode 7 should absolutely be supported by any proper SNES development tool though eventually, as that's a stock features of the system, and one that's pretty much the most well known, the most likely to be asked for, and was used widely in a whole lot of SNES games.

Manage expectations. The answers will be the same as they were with the NES. You remember "Dude, it doesn't even do scrolling" (*palm to forehead*). I'm sure this will be no different.
@inceptional3 ай бұрын
@@TheNew8bitHeroes I don't remember that. Was that something someone once complained about with an early build of NESmaker that you eventually added? Yeah, I have to keep my expectations in check and not get too carried away with my imagination, especially out the gate for sure. I'll be more than happy if we get the basic obvious stuff to start with (the use of all the normal SNES colours, using 1-4 background layers, BG tile and sprite priority, row/line scrolling), and then hopefully more stuff gets added over time until we get to a point where largely anything possible as a standard feature of the SNES will be possible in Retro Game Forge for SNES too (colour math transparency, windows/masks, direct colour, 8-pixel wide column scrolling, 512x224/512x448i resolution modes), and maybe some of the more advanced stuff eventually down the line too (Mode 7 background rotation and scaling, BG mode switching down the screen, surround sound support). But just getting anything properly SNES development related to start is already magical to me. :)
