Nice job! Love the ability use my own coffee anytime I like. I've also found that since I"m working from home, I tend to want to have multiple coffees per day; this route allows me to have multiple coffees for about the same price as a single pod. Well done - really appreciate you walking through this on behalf of the rest of us.

I bought the kit with the wooden holder, and I found using the rubber band from a bunch of asparagus around the pod about a quarter inch from the rim holds the pod snuggly in the holder and I can get the foil seal on in a more even manner. I love the wood holder though, classy.

The black cap is what presses the foil down to seal. You put the pod in the black holder, foil on top, black lid press and twist and it makes the seal.

What an excellent idea, my worry is that if I did not do it correctly coffee would get into the machine. You demonstrated it so well but for me personally it would be a hassle and I love the easiness of the Vertuo Pods and my husband and I love larger coffees. I will say since you showed the reverse Vertuo method we have been using this all the time and the coffee is perfect. I am lucky enough to have two machines so I have a choice of which type to use. Thanks for finding this though as I am sure a lot of Vertuo owners will try this method out. I have received my advent calendar for original coffee pods and it looks stylish but I am going to wait till 1st December to open the first one🤣🤣🤣🤣thanks very much .

Ah glad you liked that recipe, I thought it was a great balance. Yeah totally agree most people want Nespresso for the simplicity and ease, these are something I was asked to do a while back and had me intrigued. Think it will get even more interest in the US as the Vertuo pods seem to be a lot more expensive over there. Hope you enjoy your calendar 👍🏼

Glad they're working for you Mark! I'd imagine it's easier to find a coffee that'll work for espresso shots too over the mug sized ones? Do let us know which brands / coffee blends work best if you have some favourites. Thanks.

@@A2BProductions I just use Amazon's own blend. There does seem to be a fine line between too much or too little coffee to use. Weighing the coffee is a good guide on how much to use. Once you get used to how much to put in, you get a good coffee.

I've used this product for many many months , It is excellent and works but be aware it will cause your machine to break down over time, I have sent mine back twice , It causes the machine to get clogged up over a LONG period but if you have a guarantee and your machine can be replaced you can save an awful lot of money You need to get the foil lids that are very solid some are more flimsy than others Obviously when you call nespresso to say that your machine is broken , don't mention that you aren't using official capsules , Just buy some occasionally to keep your guarantee active

I tried these over a few months and made them up about 15 at a time and found that the next morning all the foils would have the edge lifting, no matter how much time and attention I paid to sticking them down. The only way I found to use them effectively was to make them up and use them straight away. I now use one of the metal pods.

These are great for a broke college student. I work at a coffee shop so, I get beans for free so, with these savings through these capsules I've saved enough money to buy my milk frother and my nespresso machine, which to me is worth it considering the quality is about the same, but I did have to calibrate my grind multiple times, but I have gotten it down pretty well for a pod I love.

Great video. Hang in there a little longer. Looking at the pod, I think you needed more coffee in the pod. The Nespresso filled pods uses a very fine grind. Correct me if I’m wrong, in coffee science, if the grind you have is courser you need more coffee to make up for the grind. It seems to work for me. Also, the more you make of them the better you become at making them. As for cost, the pods you use are free, the pods don’t seem to degrade. The kit in the US runs $15 to $25 on Amazon so you pay that off real quick. A 120 foils on Amazon cost $18 or 15 cents a foil. Them it’s the coffee. I can buy my favorite coffee, Mocha Java for 16oz of whole bean or they can grind it extra fine. I estimate that the coffee cost averages 35 cents a pod. That adds up to about 50 cents per pod. A few weeks back we discussed Nespresso Kona coffee being a double espresso for $2.00 UDS per pod . I found a source in Hawaii that sells 100% Kona for $165 for a 5 pound bag. Refilling pods with that Kona would total about $1.20 USD per pod average on every size, espresso to Alto.
@A2BProductions

Yeah think a finer grind and more coffee would definitely be the way to go. Would be interesting to see how it tastes with a coffee that really suited the process. Cheers for recommending them Duaine, was interesting to have a play around with 👍🏼

Cheers for doing the Vertuo refillable capsules as well. I was previously using My-Caps silicone caps but I don’t like that it’s inconsistent and not a sealed experience, even if they work and can taste as good as the Nespresso capsules with an espresso grind. The Geesta seem better since they should be less messy and more foolproof, but the added cost of ~ $.15 per use detracts from some of the benefits. At that point it may better to use an alternative method to make coffee and save the Nespresso for the odd occasion. I am curious to look into the stainless steel refillable capsules since they seem to have recently released an improved version, but I have concerns with those as well. The potential for the best crema seems to come from foil/silicone lids. By the way, you can use the Vertuo sleeves as a guideline for how much coffee to put in each capsule. For example, regular-sized coffee uses 12.5 grams of grounds. It can be fun to experiment with different sizes, since you can make espressos using this method as well. Ultimately I think I’m going to hold off on refilling the capsules for a while and just buy them from Nespresso. I’d be satisfied if they ran better promotions and priced the coffee in America similarly to other countries, since the cost per pound is staggering (~ 9x more expensive) compared to similar bagged coffee.

Yeah it’s quite a lot for a foil top that isn’t it, I hadn’t done the math on the but hopefully it’ll come down a bit if more start using them. Great idea with weighing out the coffee too, will give that a go and see if it improves things.Thanks 👍🏼

Personally I don’t see the point of buying a premium machine and then want to fanny around filling pods. I think Nespresso ones are great value. Just bought some more Altissio pods and they were £3.90 for ten which I think is a bargain 😀 Keep up the great videos 👍

Yeah it is a bit of a faff. A lot of the people who asked for the demo were based in the US and Canada even. You had me intrigued so just had a look and a pack of altissio over there is $8.50, so about £6.50 according to Alexa 😂 More involved than a simple currency conversion I guess but it is a big jump up in price.

Just looked up the price of Virtuoline Intenso XL and Dolce XL, $12.00 USD for a sleeve of 10. A pound of coffee beans from my local shop, $12.00. The least expensive pod in US are single espresso at $8.50 a sleeve. I’m not complaining, the first purchase I made after the machine was 100 pods of various sized and my refill kit. You get good beans, get the grind set and practice the fill and I do get a pretty good drink. I don’t fill one at a time, that’s not worth the setup. I do 15 to 20 at one setting. That will last a week or two plus a handful of Nespresso pods. I hate to admit how much caffeine I consume per day.

One test you could do is to compare the grounds taken from a genuine vertuo pod in the reusable pod, and compare the taste/result against the same vertuo pod as sold... Have you had access to the holiday capsule range yet? The Il Caffe is intensity 13, and in a latte it tastes a bit different from the Napoli. I'm not sure that it's better than Napoli, but it cuts through the milk just as well to make a punchier milk drink.

Great suggestion 👍🏼 Would be interesting to see if you could taste a difference, then you’d know it’s all down to finding the right grind and blend. No I don’t have access to those yet I don’t think but cheers for the heads up, intensity 13 sounds right up my street!

Maybe it’s just me - but if your going thru all the work of cleaning the old pod/ grinding coffee / filling pods, the foil etc - I’d just buy a “affordable” espresso machine. But I guess these let people try different types of coffee which is one of the limits on the vertuo due to the long patent life and the vertuo pods costing higher too .
@A2BProductions
@A2BProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought the same thing really, would it be better to just get a bean to cup and have done with it but as you say this could have its uses for those who want to try out different coffees or save a bit of money without changing machines. If you can find the right grind of coffee already bagged then guess it takes some hassle out of it. Not sure how much cleaning and maintenance there is with an espresso or bean to cup machine 🤔

I'd have thought this brew method will have greater tolerance for different grind sizes compared to the original machines. But I don't really see this as viable really - until there are proper barcoded re-usable pods - then it would be fun to experiment with different coffees. But personally think the nespresso vertuo pods are so nice that probably isn't worth it!

The medium grind for drip coffee makers work, there just won't be the same kind of creme you would get with the fine grind for regular espresso machines. I took my husband's older brun coffee grinder to re-grind our folders regular coffee and making it a little finer gave me a closer flavor to the bianca forte pod and a better creme.

We have reviewed the sealpod ones on the channel. I had worries about machine damage with those too, but was surprised how smooth the handle went down when using them with the Essenza mini. That being said I've only used them a few times and whether it might catch wrong one day and break something I'm really not sure. It is a risk I suppose.

Really don’t understand why people do this, the one thing a pod machine has over a proper coffee machine is convenience, they are quick, easy, create no mess and you aren’t constantly cleaning them, why buy one if you are then going to use refillable pods to create your own blends? Just buy a coffee machine.🙄🙄🙄🙄

I've had much better luck with this than a regular espresso machine, except a Rancillo Sylvia I had for awhile, which cost about $1k after I was done getting a grinder that would work with it. And it only made better coffee about half the time, mostly because of user error I'm sure. With this system I make good coffee almost every time.
