nesRGB mod! Nintendo NES Restoration! Recap! RGB! Expansion Audio! LED mod! Retrobrite! AV multi!

Took a $40 barely working NES from ebay and did a full restoration on it. Scrub down, retrobrite, av multi-out, nesRGB install, full recap, LED mod, expansion audio, using HD retrovision component cables to a crt.

A quick edit of the nesRGB mod install procedure. This NES should be good to go for another 30 years with the capacitor replacements (recap) The nesRGB outputs a superior video signal than the original rf and composite video outputs. Pair that with the av multi-out port and you can use n64/snes styled av video cords for composite, s-video, component, or scart rgb video outputs. Im using HDretrovision component cables to a crt tv but you could easily plug these cables into a retrotink 2x pro to output hdmi to a modern flat panel tv through hdmi and have virtually no lag. The expansion audio mod allows some japanese games that had extra audio channels to output those extra sound channels that we never got here outside of Japan. The pallete switch will shift the color tones between natural, improved, and garish color presets with garish being a really color saturated look. Ive been soldering off and on as a hobby for a long time but I am far from a pro so no s#it talking 😂

I replaced the red power LED in one of my NESs with a slow blink RGB LED. Looks pretty cool. On another one I used a blue LED. Thats the one i like the best.

I've thought about offering services, I need to look into the logistics and see if I can source supplies in bulk a little cheaper. I have a few front loaders right now I need to rgb mod and might throw them on eBay.

Great video! Where did you connect the brown wire from the audio expansion board to the NESRGB? That part was skipped in the video and it’s hard to make out if I pause it.

@@JP-dn2eb You found the easter egg mistake i made in the video 🤫🤣 If I remember correctly it was for the audio expansion mod I installed on the back of the board and the wire was too short and I replaced it with a longer dif color wire.

Great video! So the retrovision multiout to component cable takes an RGB signal and actively converts it to YPbBr? You don't need to install the component video board right? Is this a better option than installing the component board and using a regular RCA cable?

Yes the HDretrovision cables uses RGB and strips the sync to composite video sync instead of c-sync, They were designed for these systems and output an image pretty much on par with RGB. I looked into the component board option a while back but honestly its been so long that I forget what my research found but both methods would work. I basically went the HDretrovision cable way because its less work and allows me to hot swap between my nintendo consoles that use the av multiout.... And the HDretro cables are known to be good quality and I dont think I could find any reviews or opinions on the component board back then.

what are the resistor values on the expansion audio board? I can't find definitive guides for adding expansion audio with the nesrgb for the front loader

The one on left ( nearest pin 2) code = 4322 or 43.2kΩ, the resistor on the right code = 1001 or 1kΩ

Still hoping to see someone get the ppu out with el cheapo eBay solder kit like I have lol (the plastic syringe style sucker). Thinking it's prolly stupid to even try. Nice work tho man. Good to see a raggedy ass nintendo get saved! Also nvr heard of boiling the 72 pin 👍

Im sure someone has done it with a plunger sucker but those grounded pins really soak up the heat and can be a pain even with a decent desoldering setup. I always try boiling the 72 pin connector over the replacements. It gets them spotless and the heat makes the worn pins regain their shape and factory springiness. It usually works so good you wont even have to push the cart down for awhile. Thanks for watching!

A UK seller on ebay. I bought 2 to test out and they look to be identical to the ones voultar uses so I go back to buy more and they are gone 😣 Cant find the ribbon cable solderless mod for the av multi out ports either 😣😣
