Nest Checks?! The Bird Brains Podcast EP 45!

Love this episode, the Star Finch topic is like every one knows. I’ve never done a nest check unless both parents are outside the nest. I’d love to see a live podcast from you guys! Great episode! You guys would really enlighten newbies!

Congrats on #45!! Checking so many nests & birds speaks to the need for efficient data collection & recording. How do you do that? - A note card by each nest, filling out a paper form then keying into a PC, or an app, or a home-grown spreadsheet/ database? Maybe you could do a podcast about this.

You can also work with fix installed cameras. Time lapse function is very handy to observe the behavior of the parents and to know if chicks have hatched already. I don't keep any species who doesn't tolerate nest checks at all. My most sensitive birds are Amandava amandava and Estrilda troglodytes, when both parents are out it is safe to check the nest with a telescope camera. My Emblema pictum and most Munia pairs don't mind taking down the whole nest to check. However the Munias are a big "MAYBE", since I have found various experiences (for several species) in litterature.

Absolutely! Bengalese and society finches are the same species! Lonchura Domestica is the scientific name. Like shafttails/long tailed finches, they have different names based on where the people talking about them are, but same bird.

I try not to check my Gouldian nest. Never check the nest of my Painteds, Stars, Cordons, Jacarini, Orange-Breast or Ruddies. Love your Podcast

Ok, I’ll see if we can’t do a jacarini episode. Not much out there because they’re hard to breed and keep. But o have kept them in the past.
