I’ve wanted a Nest thermostat for years… Will this new Nest thermostat entice you to replace an Ecobee (or other) in your Apple HomeKit home?
@troydonaldson2 ай бұрын
No, I won't be getting it because it's a Google product. Plus I'm very happy with my existing Ecobee Premium. I actually prefer the design of the previous Nest thermostat. The new one's base that mounts to the wall is so small that for most it will require significant drywall patching to make it look good (mounting plates are ugly imo).
@ReyG_HKSH2 ай бұрын
@@troydonaldson Concur. It looks so cool though 🤓 Gotta say I do really like the iPod-like controls.
@troydonaldson2 ай бұрын
@@ReyG_HKSH Yeah I like the iPod like controls too, but with my Ecobee, I never actually touch the thermostat anyways. My climate is fully automated with Ecobee, and if I want to manually adjust warmer or cooler, I just say “Siri make it warmer/cooler”. I never need to physically walk up to the thermostat and adjust the temperature.

Good argument! I've had my Nest Gen2 thermostat forever and has PAID for itself and then some which is now ancient BUT, still works perfectly and will run Routines like it always has so, WHY would I want to spend extra MONEY for something that is STILL working and its "new" features will NOT benefit me in any way??? Ask yourself that question and get back to me! Ecobee came out WAY later than the Nest thermostats did and I went with that at the time. Ecobee is a good brand as well, but was NOT available way back then. Just how elaborate do you need to get with heating/cooling?? It's either ON or OFF based on temperature and when needed???

Thank you! You helped me to connect my Nest 4 to Apple Home Kit seamlessly. I love this thermostat, especially being able to manage the temperature of my home verbally via Siri.

I'm glad you mentioned the mounting plate - it's huge and ugly, and I was wondering if the thermostat could be installed without it as well!

Yes, the mounting plate for this, or any smart thermostat is unsightly in my opinion. Looks best without it and for the price it needs to look its best 😂

Thanks for the video,I have 1 question,Do I need to connect the nest thermostat to Google home for the 1st time installation then go to homekit,or I can connect to homekit directly?
@ReyG_HKSHАй бұрын
It was my first time setting up any Nest product but I had to go through Google Home to do the initial setup to get the Matter code to pair with Apple Home. The Google app may be deleted afterward and it will continue to work in Apple Home.

What are options for HomeKit matter hubs… assuming you need a HomeKit matter compatible hub to control the thermostat outside the home… correct? Example are all home pods matter compatible?
@ReyG_HKSH2 ай бұрын
For Apple Home compatibility with Matter devices you will need either an Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini or HomePod 2.

I have many Alexa things in my home, will it work with Alexa verbal commands? Or I have Samsung Smart Things, will it work with Samsung? Thanks

It is Matter compatible so it should integrate into those platforms. I’m able to control it via Siri so Alexa should be able to as well.
@T0M4T03520 күн бұрын
Maybe dumb question, but does it work with automations via Matter? I want to be able to say Hey Siri, goodnight, and have my lights go off, temperature go down, etc.

Yes, you can add it to scene automation.

I just installed two of these in My Home and pick them up through the Georgia Power Marketplace for $79.95 each because there’s a $200 rebate through Georgia Power. Simple to set up and looks great on the wall. No way I’d have spent $600 on 2 of these. Pretty sad you don’t realize this is Home Kit compatible when making a review.
@twennywonn2 ай бұрын
Google handicapped the Matter integration with homekit. With Home Assistant you gain access to eco mode, and the sensors. Or you can get a starling hub which exposes the same.

Are you able to delete the google home app after set up and still use it exclusively with home kit? That’s the only way I would buy this
@ReyG_HKSH2 ай бұрын
Yes, but since there is no support with the native Nest app, there is no way to set schedules or any of the other advanced functions. If you set all those in the Google app during set up, it is possible to delete the app and control the basic functions in the Apple Home app.
@joelrnyc3252 ай бұрын
Much appreciated thank you! I don’t use schedules anyway so this is perfect for me.

Google destroyed the progressive tech of the nest thermostat. The nest thermostat used to get almost an update every three months with new features and now I’ve had the third generation and zero updates, zero feature improvements.

My first Nest so I don’t really have too many gripes other than I was pretty much forced to open a Google Home account to get this into Apple Home which is my platform preference.

I’ll never buy anything from nest / google again…..I bought a the gen 3 2019 ….this year it decides to not turn on my boiler ……my ac unit works fine , but no call for heat……google told me it was a issue with the base …….of course google no longer sells the base new any more …..so I had to find a used one off eBay 🙄….I get the used one…now no call for ac ….something is obviously is wrong with the stupid bases ….280$ I’ve spent for a thermostat to last 4 years…..this thing has saved me nothing….now I have to change out bases every season 🙄 freaking unbelievable

The previous Nest design was inspired by the classic round electromechanical Honeywell thermostat from the '50s. It was a modern take on that innovative design. No wonder its purpose was obvious.

I did NOT watch this video because I have the Nest Learning Thermostat GEN 2 and already works with Alexa, Google, and SmartThings and has PAID for itself several times over. AND STILL is working fine so WHY would I want to PAY money for something I never even look at or touch for YEARS now? I have Routines setup to control all these already so WHY do I need to "upgrade"? I DON'T! If it ain't broke the WHY fix it? You DON'T! This "new" model with it's domed glass has MORE reflections and fingerprints and is WORSE that what I have! Now when my Nest GEN 2 gives up the ghost I will indeed buy this but for now absolutely NOT! I still have an OLD tech thermostat on hand to put in place while I wait for a replacement to arrive in the event of a failure! Smart Home "tech" is NOT perfect and ALWAYS need a "backup" plan when shit goes south!

@@HockeyGuy_in_STL Perhaps but, WHY upgrade for the EXACT same functionality as I do NOT use Apple Home??? Can you answer the $275 WASTE of money question? There's NO need at this point!
