The purpose of main method in Java is to be program execution start point. Scanner class/buffer reader are used for input functions. A program should always have atleast one method. If main method is not given in the program then you need to create the object for the execution of the method(other than main). Hope its clear now. Happy Learning

Although you might have gotten your answer,but the starting value will be 1 because the initial value cannot be 0 because it will give error because it must have a starting value unless it has some other piece of code specified for it.
