This was one of the very few commercials back then that made you stop what you were doing, and WATCH. For a commercial- It was a spontaneous and irresistible invitation to another place. The scenes were mesmerizing and the soundtrack was so compelling compared to the standard back then. You wished you could jump right into it and experience the pleasure of it all, and when it was over in 30 seconds...you briefly wished it wasn't.

+mk toohtwo It was one of the rare classics from the 1980's. You don't see commercials like this anymore. I was actually in that world, albeit... in a studio. The backdrops and sets were amazing.
@mk202

In my opinion, you took part in one of the greatest commercials from that place in time. Were you aware at all during the days you spent filming, that the end result was going to be something so special? I'm thinking there must have been some hints that the commercial being created was going to be a pivot point for the brand. 'Sweet Dreams' had a few different versions in the same theme, and the Nestle ran the campaign for a few years.
@ToddMcDurmont
@ToddMcDurmont 8 жыл бұрын
Well first of all, I was in makeup for 45 minutes and the actual shot of me took less time. The studio was cold. It was in January, 1986. As a result of the cold, the candy bars would break off in large chunks, hanging out of my mouth. Not too appetizing. So the end shot shows me simply chewing and looking up. I was on an "apple crate". That's showbiz talk for a box. The reason was to have a bucket to my right so I could spit the candy bars out after each take. Think about eating all that candy, after about 20 or 30 takes! You could get sick! So at that moment, I had no idea I was apart of an iconic '80's TV commercial. Only until the commercial actually aired, did we realize the beauty of it. Nestle's & J. Walter Thompson did an outstanding job from concept, to production to final product. It's timeless! It's historic.

I was looking at another video about "forgotten vintage candy bars" when all of a sudden they played two seconds of this video and I came right over here. I was 19 in 86 and life as an adult was just beginning. This commercial wasn't like the others... the music and images stayed with you like a beautiful dream that you didn't want to end. Who would have thought back then that someone would be diabolical enough to create Fox News and actually successfully DISTORT REALITY? Now no one trust actual news stations and it is really a depressing state of affairs. I am a old man now and it is good to escape these crazy times with beautiful memories such as this one.... thank you for posting this.

I was thinking back to the 80's and wondered if I could find this commercial. Amazing!! Here it is. Unvelievable! This was such a beautiful and somehow tragic commercial with beautifully haunting people, scenery, & voices. It reminds me of a time when there was more wonder in the world and people were more hopeful for the future. The 80's and the whole world was out before us all. I would have been in 8th and 9th grades during the height of this commercial, so no wonder the unbridled optimism I feel when I feel this time in life surging back. I remember how this commercial made me teary-eyed, especially the transporting sound of the voice singing this song and the guy with eyes looking up almost in a transcendent, spiritual way. So much accomplished in a 30 second television commercial, right? For a candy bar that will land you right on the treadmill! But alas, for a while I am through the n-e-s-t-l-e-s portal and back to 1986. Thank you to whoever posted this. And I can only hope (adult side of me) that Nestlé gets their act together when it comes to water and the environment. Why would they tarnish their own reputation when they had this commercial of total beauty?
@ToddMcDurmont

Way back then, I was given the privilege of a copy of the commercial from the ad agency, J. Walter Thompson. They developed and produced this amazing commercial. So it just made since to share this art piece with the world. It is amazing and timeless. And yes, you are right about the 1980's. I lived it. It was an amazing time, full of hope and optimism for America. Nothing like today. Perhaps we may see the '80's again. I feel it in the air.

@salzburgsnow8056
@salzburgsnow8056 8 жыл бұрын
+Todd McDurmont And I am hopeful with you for a return of the 80's optimism. Because, unless there is some nod to the artist that I don't know, look at the last scene...lovers in a passionate embrace and the whole theme is 'alpine' so I would expect snow to start falling...but here come the bubbles. Totally 80's. Ready for a voice to say 'pop up videos'. :)
@ToddMcDurmont

You didn't expect a commercial to talk back to you, did you? LOL! Yeah, I stayed in the business for many years but eventually took a different path. It was great fun and tougher work than you think! But very rewarding. I still do some work but only if it's worth the effort. The industry has changed so dramatically. What do I eat? Hmmm...I kinda like European dark chocolate brands. Don't care for milk chocolate. That's like cheating! I mean if you're gonna eat chocolate, don't dilute it with milk! What do you prefer?

The success of "N.A.W." was a combination of Maxfield Parrish's art work, as a backdrop and the haunting synthesized music. It all came together is one amazing commercial. Those people at J. Walter Thompson were brilliant. Back then it was just another commercial to us. I got a call from my agent (Elite Model Management) and took the appointment, like the rest of the models. When I auditioned, they just played the music and I reacted, while eating the "mini" version of the candy bar, like the ones we see during Halloween. Shooting my part of the commercial was no less than about 30 minutes. I was actually in makeup longer at about 45 minutes. The mammoth studio was cold. It was January, 1986 in NYC. It was cold enough that the candy bars were breaking off in my mouth. No too attractive. So when you see my part of the commercial, I'm "chewing" and looking up. You never actually see me take a bite, nor do you see the bar. We had no choice. Pieces of NAW candy bar, hanging out of my mouth was not too sexy, ya know! Anyway, it was no big deal. Just another booking. Just another commercial. As a model in NYC, you book a job and move on, not realizing what's created in your wake. There are so many auditions and bookings, NAW was just one more in the appointment book. Of course when NAW aired, it really stood out and ran for three years until the Maxfield Parrish estate apparently stepped in and allegedly threatened a lawsuit because Nestle's didn't appear to ask for permission. Subsequent Alpine White commercials just didn't have the magic. They all fell short of the original. This commercial is a rare singularity in a wasteland of mediocre commercial and a metaphor for the style of the 1980's. And...that style remains timeless! I'm glad I was a part of it. Yes, a documentary would be fun! ;-)

The lady in the hood looks like the most serene and majestic person in the universe! I would put this on my ringer, but I just use a plain old ring tone. The reason, is because when I put songs on my ringer, they get ruined because I associate them with a problem my boss has, or my dad complaining again about how much he hates his apartment. Oh well. Song was in the vein of so many bands of that time that were not the most "mainstream" like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran (well they were huge) but it was weird seeing it as a TV commercial jingle for candy but extremely cool at the same time for fans of groups like those

Todd, you were incredibly handsome in 1986 (and, of course, going by your picture you still are) Your looks, the dream-like song, Maxfield Parrish's art, the other good looking people shot through soft focus made this a legendary ad quite beyond the vast majority of ads then and even today...and weirdly enough it was for a quite ordinary chocolate bar (I remember Alpine White being good but certainly nothing special). In a way, it was quite a waste putting this all together just for an everyday chocolate bar-it kind of deserved being a fantasy sequence for the art house cinema crowd or something similar. I remember watching this with my friends as a teen and the ad always struck us as being something special that you needed to watch straight through and not ignore.

Well thanks! I appreciate kudos! You're right about the candy bar itself. It was okay but the commercial really sold it. The entire concept was really exceptional, and shooting it with the Maxfield Parrish backdrop, and that haunting music, it just came together. They actually were planning to use the 1983 Eurythmics song "Sweet Dreams" but I suppose the royalties were too high.

There is no way a commercial is supposed to make me literally drift off every single time and end up...right back in '86 grounded cause my dumb bf was stealing these from the little liquor store on the way back from the swimming pool and ran off leaving me to get chased down. Wait no. The commercial is dreamy and makes me think of the Alps!

I remember these very well and I was only 9! My parents' house was built that summer. Those were certainly better times than today. I've been on a nostalgic kick lately. In youtube, we get to reintroduce ourselves to Hanes Inspector #12 and the Fruit of the Loom Guys as well as Bonkers Candy and early CGI from Robert Abel & Associates. Than there's the classic HBO space movie intro and the ABC star tunnel movie intro. The music was also outstanding and products were built much better I want to go back and re-visit my childhood. LOL I've lost too many family members in recent years and things just aren't what they used to be.

Wiki: Nestlé was formed in 1905 by the merger of the Anglo-Swiss Milk Company, established in 1866 by brothers George and Charles Page, and Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé, founded in 1866 by Henri Nestlé (born Heinrich Nestle). Over the years, products were branded much like "Nestlé's Quick", showing possession but not always. "Nestlé Alpine White" has a better sound and flows better than more awkward "Nestlé's Alpine White". Either way, both are appropriate. Conversely, Nestlé Quick doesn't sound as good as Nestlé's Quick! It's just good 'ole marketing! However...in the song, they sing "N-E-S-T-L-E-S" because that's the original song branding, "N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestle makes the very best...chocolate!" How ironic that they would use BOTH singular and plural versions in the song! How about that for Nestle trivia! ;-)

Of course that tune was made famous by a ventriloquist's dog in a series of ads (of which they reprise briefly in the early 90's). Too bad it looks like Nestle decided to pull out of the US market and give someone else the keys to their candy empire. I don't suppose the new guys will try to bring back Alpine White the way we remember it. www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/01/17/why-nestle-sold-its-u-s-candy-business-and-bought-a-vitamin-company/?.d83f016323a6

Well said. And you're right. There is little creativity in commercials anymore. Obnoxious crap is absolutely right. Some of the younger generation have their vapid heads up their asses with social media, computer games and reality shows. Just look at the writing on some sitcoms. ABC is actually pretty good these days but the rest offer pure pablum for sheeple and mental light weights. Shows that are nothing more than a laxative for the brain. Thank god for Showtime, HBO, Netflix and the rest. The last vestige of creativity. Note the gratuitous sarcasm. ;-)
