Net Making Made Easy: DIY

Net Making or throwing a net is a valuable skill for an outdoorsman. This could be a useful survival skill as nets can carry supplies, secure a load, catch fish and even trap birds or small animals. Of all the bushcraft and survival skills, this has been on of my more challenging to learn. In reality, it is actually quite simple as it is a repetitive motion once you understand the process. This method as taught at the Pathfinder School is net making made easy! Net making is a great DIY project.

Brought back some old memories. Back in about 1957 or so my dad got caught at home for about two weeks because of a rainy spell. He worked outside as a carpenter. To help pass the time he made an entire gill net. Because of all the high water him and a buddy set it out in a back water off of a local bayou. That first night about a six foot alligator gar got in it and tore the whole thing to shreds. I don’t remember him ever trying to make another gill net although he ran trot lines until the end. Thanks for the memory.

Hi Matt, this came at a perfect time for me as I had recently decided to give net making a try. I've seen videos on the subject before and I have a net needle template that I used to carve a needle out of a paint stick. I believe you and Dave C use the same technique -- I've watched his rope clinic series as it was being posted so I do have to go back and review episode 5. I must say it is a simple enough technique, and I just have to practice to get it right. I"m using mason line to practice since I am new to the process and it is proving to be a little more difficult than it appears. I'm sure with some practice I will be able to make more consistently sized meshes. Nonetheless, thank you for all you do and share here on youtube for the benefit of those of us interested in the craft! Happy New Year!

I feel certain you will get it! It definitely took me a few sessions to finally gain confidence with this. For the longest time I just avoided doing it lol. That mason twine can be a little aggravating because of the slick factor but stick with it and I you are making some great nets soon! Thank you for your kind words and for your interest and support! such a compicated method to do something simple. There are other ways of making a net and I'd argue faster than this. Sure it works, you got a net afterall but required so many tools when all one really required was a knife and some cordage maybe a couple of sticks

Great job Matt! Weren't up for making 5 bow drills from scratch? LOL! I was pretty impressed by your lighting on the video. I really struggled with trying to find a good recording angle & lighting. I think it was super helpful to include the mistake and dangers of making a slip knot. I loved how you showed to add the paracord and get it ready for some future traps. Really, really nice job.

Hi Matt, did you know that a fish net could be easily converted into a Hammock if you've made it long enough and wide enough? If you're stock in the woods, it's great to know.

Great instructional video but I respectfully have a suggestion for a change in the way you form your knot. You start a knot with the standard moves of picking up a mesh, throwing a loop over your left hand, then going behind the mesh and back up through the loop and then cinching down your knot making sure that it doesn't come down off of the mesh and turn into a slip-knot, and that's perfectly fine, but if before cinch the knot down you added the step of again going behind the mesh and then coming up through the mesh; instead of only around it; and then cinching down your knot, there is no way for the knot to drop off of the mesh and become a slip-knot. Reef knots are trash for joining line. It is a knot and not a bend. A simple fisherman's bend (or a double fisherman's) would be so much more appropriate for the task of joining line. A perk would be it's inline/streamlined shape. If you can tie your shoes, you can tie that knot.

I found this video profoundly unhelpful, iit all hints on the viewer either already freezing specific items or buying them, what about those of us who don't have gauges or shuttles?

I would say that is the equivalent of watching a sewing video when you don't own a sewing machine or needles and thread? Unfortunately, you either have to acquire the minimal items required to make a net or craft them. All the gear minus the cordage will cost less than 15.00 and I provided links in the description to where I got mine. The purpose of this video is to instruct people in the use of a net needle and gauge. Maybe at some point I will do a video on how to improvise or create a needle and gauge. In the meantime, there are many videos on youtube just search "make a net needle." You can then carve one out of wood. Gauges are easy to carve or improvise as well. I hope that helps.
