Netflix 2021 Maid Ending Explained, Margaret Qualley plays a woman cleaning houses, and not always getting by, in an adaptation of a best-selling memoir.
“Maid” begins just after the last straw has been broken. Alex, a 25-year-old aspiring writer living north of Seattle, lies awake watching the man who just ended an argument with her by punching a hole in a wall. When she’s sure he’s asleep, she gathers their 2-year-old daughter, Maddy, and tiptoes out of the mobile home they share. She and Maddy are about to be homeless for the first time, but not the last.

Unfortunately, that touching mother and daughter story wasn't exactly accurate. Yes, she was crazy and had the whole gypsy art thing going on. But she did all that crazy stuff in Europe. In the book MAID, Stephanie (Alex) said her mom faked an accent and acted like she was European. Read MAId and then CLASS. The show may have been perfect, but reading her words of truth is even more perfect.

I'm so happy they're finally putting a spotlight on the fact that abuse can be more than just physical! We need more series like this focusing on DV especially with a narcissist partner when trauma bonds are formed. That hole that she climbed out of is very much real when it comes to these types of relationships only theirs a lot more tears, blood and screaming involved. Amazing series!

Absolutely, unequivocally the best show I've seen in a long time. Excellently written and performed. Mother and daughter Andie Macdowell and Margaret Qualley completely amaze and the entire supporting cast is pitch perfect. Additionally, the plot itself, of a single mother's single-minded struggle to build a better future for her daughter while escaping domestic abuse, whatever the cost, is emotionally invested and deeply moving. You will care about these characters. You will root for Alex (Qualley), every step of the way. My only gripe is that the story achieves its arc through significant help from one of Alex's wealthy friends, the kind of help that most women in her position are never lucky enough to receive. In any case, it is an excellent story all around. Also, I now have a major Qualley crush after watching this. Amazing actor.

Gripping from start to finish! Amazing acting all around especially from Sarah Margaret Qualley (Alex). An emotional rollercoaster, of attachment and attempting to break free from an abusive relationship. The series portrays the difficulties of a single parent, going through financial hardship and the strength of a mother who never gives up. Series touches on several important subjects, and I cannot fault it, from mental health to finding your true self. One of the best Netflix series out there and would definitely recommend.

I got chills watching this series. My parents lived on the same island (Camano Island, WA) that "Barefoot Billy" burglarized all those homes on. They had a nice log home on 5 acres and I always thought of that when I visited. I didn't know that the MAID author was in the area at the same time. It hit really close to home. All of the TV shots of the PWN brought back a lot of memories of that time. I'm glad she was so strong for herself and her daughter. My dad died in 2013 and our family moved off that island. I'm glad her book is a hit and she is safe and has a great life for her and her daughter. Great acting all throughout this series and it was a long binge but worth every moment. Best since I saw Queens Gambit.

Several reviews have already affirmed the outstanding quality of acting and the skill of the scripting and direction in this 10 part drama series. It is about 'being oneself' in the 21st century and taking a legal stand for the right to be in a close relationship , sexual or otherwise, without being intimidated by expressed or suppressed violence. There is also a lot of fun and whimsy in it, largely flowing around the 3 yr old daughter of the central character. She is both natural and self aware and it is a winning combination in one so young. This was very worth watching not indulging in any extreme version of what is true/false good/bad or right/wrong, but always coming back to samples of good humans going through things in relation to one another, more or less sensitive, more or less aware, but naturally interconnected in ways which are unusually free of stereotypes. Just watch it when you have time. It is so good.

A really good, heartwarming, inspirational, and a work of art movie. I loved all of the characters, especially the lead actress and also the cinematography. It impacted me in ways I didn’t expect and I have learned so, so much, because I also experienced emotional abuse in the past. The lead character showed so much kindness and bravery. Made me laugh, cry, and helped me reflect and process on what I’ve been through. It’s so good I finished it in one sitting. It’s definitely worth the watch and I would watch it again and again. Thank you for this movie. My heart goes out to all the women and men who’ve experienced physical and emotional traumas.

I’m like on episode 5 or 6 and this show is driving me a little crazy. Some things are very exaggerated maybe some is for humor and even though the main character is a good mom to a extent, I think she is too prideful and I’m sorry when you have a child all pride should be thrown out the window. she would only let people help her if they asked multiple times. I’m not even a mother but if I was one I would let myself be embarrassed before having my child sleep in a car or on the floor when there was someone I knew that if asked would help me out even if temporarily. I know I’m supposed to be rooting for the main character but I’m not feeling her. So far this show has been painting Alex as if she’s this star mom and poor victim of everything. she could have made better voices to protect her daughter then her pride.

I mean she has a history with him and he is the father of her child. You don't just end a relationship like that in a second. Its a process and it takes time for victims of DV to get out of that situation and break the cycle. And nate and her were in different stages of their lifes. It wouldn't have worked out. They weren't equal, he was like her caretaker, being with him was not going to solve anything fo her. She needed to figure out things by herself for her sake and for the sake of her daughter. And i feel like writing was so important for her, so going to college, and getting out of that town was the perfect ending.

Had me in tears halfway through when she gave up. I don't cry often, but the emotion conveyed, the actor's incredible performances and the cinematography were all so on point during those moments - it felt so raw and so real; I was having a total ugly cry. Those of us who have looked out at the world from the bottom of a well, existing on autopilot, absent yet aware... those are the moments that are deeply relatable for many of us who endured abusive relationships. They're hard to relive but it's mini series' like these that touch on real and specific subjects that give the audience such an intense emotional response and offer insight into the world of victims, the family dynamics surrounding abuse and mental illness, battles with addiction and memory recall, the struggles of the impoverished and the reality of a flawed social security system. If I could give 6 stars, I would! Amazing.

I think the structure of the story is arranged in this way, so that you're not sure how deep is the problem. I mean throwing objects at someone is hardcore enough and you shouldn't have second thoughts, but I think this is the most amazing part about this show, that you go through the same doubts as the main character. You only see in like 6th episode what lead to the decision in the first episode. Before that, you can still think, oh yes meaby it's just overreacting, it happend only once, now he's really trying and all that bullshit. Sometimes you might even not remember, what exactly this other person does, it's such a great amount of denial, that you doubt even your memory. "He didn't hit me right, he takes care of our family". He yells but after few days you dont even remember about what.

Agree with all the positive posts. The back story is crisply edited into the story. And the best part, the heroine is not stereotypical especially considering the domestic violence issue. Refreshingly devoid of pity parties, excessive tears and over emotionality like many other dramatic portrayals of women I.e Defending Jacob’s mother character. This is a strong young modern woman whose growing back her self esteem. I found myself rooting for her mission and her growth. Top notch acting and it was nice to see indigent people not grotesquely portrayed like Hill Billy Elegy or August Osage County.

so many of her life experiences myself and many other young women I have know have traveled her journey. the story is so real The capacity of love women have is unmeasurable and their tolerance to endure so much pain and still move forward for th of the sake of their children and walk out & away but still care for the men they love and some how forgive them is.so evident in the supporting cast and the roles they played . the writers must have deep personal insight as what it is to be a child living with bipolar mothers and fathers who were drunk and abusive. One time I was told that children who were emotionally or physically abuse are victims but without effective therapy and supportive environment they become victimizers. Sustaining relationships or having people in their lives be able to sustain their relationship with them are rare. I was watching it till 5 Am in the morning. it got too real for me as a custodial grandmother for two out of 8 children born to a relative who self medicated due to neglect mental and physical abuse with abandonment and terror like seen in this series. The night terrors if your eve heard a child scream in their sleep from a night terror its something you can never forget. It felt so sad seeing my grandchildren's life and future being played out on TV. Kudos to the whole team in Netflix series Maid. thank you for shedding a bright light in the dark room of child abuse.

Good film but I felt this series was very Misandry to me. Most of the men in the series were not good people and just stereotypical. Sean- the alcoholic emotional abuser Hank- former abuser and absentee father. Basil- The con man boyfriend/husband taking advantage of the Paula, stealing her money Nate- The simp guy who drops Alex after he realized he didn’t have a shot. The goofy PEP teacher- The clueless man out of touch teacher trying to teach mothers how to be better mothers. James- Regina’s husband who divorces her when he can’t give him a baby. This guy originally left his wife to marry Regina. Luis- The no good handyman that initially refuses to help her black mold problem. Miach- The second scum bag boyfriend of Paula who clearly is using her and makes no secret of that. If you noticed all the men either makes things more difficult for her throughout the film. The women are the one that helped and saved Alex. The men are mostly the cause of her problems.

Instead she kept her DIGNITY, COMPOSURE, SELF-RESPECT and PRIDE. Two MAJOR resources was there for her to grab but she took her own road to success. Her down fall became her biggest resource. Magnificent series, with a tremendous sadness, with great acting, an extremely well written script, the triangle of Maddy the baby girl, Alex her mother and Sean her abusive and neurotic father are the main characters, well the clumsy grandmother as well (the great actress Andie Mac Dowell) Back to the script, you may replace the second “man” with “woman” (in Philip Larkin’s This Be the Verse) and you have Netflix’s new 10-part drama Maid in a nutshell. Inspired by Stephanie Land’s memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive, it tells the story of 23-year-old Alex (Margaret Qualley) who, with her two-year-old daughter Maddy (an extraordinarily appealing Rylea Nevaeh Whittet - and I speak as one who finds the charms of all onscreen and most real-life children resistible) flees an emotionally abusive relationship with Maddy’s father, Sean (Nick Robinson). What follows is a part rags-to-riches - or at least to not-rags - story, as Alex starts to piece her life back together via grit, shelters, the occasional kindness of strangers and a cleaning job with a rackety firm run by an unforgiving woman named Yolanda (Tracy Vilar). Embedded within it, however, is an unflinching anatomisation of the red tape that surrounds every effort to access the (already minimal) help supposedly on offer to desperate women and their children, and the unfitness for purpose of every aspect of the state that is meant to offer succour. Alex picks her way through the demoralising labyrinth of forms, intrusive questions, document requirements, finding herself in one terrible Catch-22 situation after another until a combination of persistence and luck enable her to start a journey back to stability for them both. It dramatises the precariousness of existence without a fixed abode, a proper income or family support and conjures a world rarely seen in real life or on screen. It illuminates all the vulnerabilities that having children brings. The slightest mishap, without the money or resources to correct it, can only snowball into disaster. Often, we see the running total of Alex’s finances, ticking down to zero before she can secure what she needs to get the next day’s cash - food for herself, petrol for the car she needs for work, the co-pay for Maddy’s daycare - let alone start saving towards a rental deposit. But over the 10 hours, the series walks an admirably fine line between showing us the reality of poverty in America (which is not to say that things are any better here) and creating misery porn. Alex and all those around her are fully realised characters - especially her “undiagnosed bipolar” mother Paula (Qualley’s own mother Andie MacDowell) - gradually fleshed out and always played and treated with sympathy. Even when, particularly in Sean’s case, it is hard for the viewer to feel sympathetic towards him.

Well my daughter never told us about the abuse until she left so we didn't know. But the ex son in law did a lot of nice things to/for us, like Sean did in the series. And yeah, the Dad seemed to change but the fact that he dropped her off at the ferry at night knowing she had no where to go was unforgivable. If for no other reason, everyone should watch this and you see your family is not as messed up! Man with a mother like she had, who needs enemies! At first I hated Paula's character because I thought she was such a nut and a flake. I get that she is bipolar, but she can easily turn from easygoing and lovable to callous and extremely selfish. I was annoyed that she wouldn't get the medical care and attentions she needs for her mental health, and be the mother her daughter needs her to be. I hated the fact that she also became a helpless child to her daughter and that her daughter has to parent her 60+ woman, when she is already overwhelmed with a 3 year old. Why couldn't she put her daughter's needs first before hers like a good mother? She always created drama for herself. She is so gullible and naive about men, and always seems to take on men that screw her over. She always makes up ridiculous stories all the time about her love affairs and her art. She needs to grow up and stop being an irresponsible child. The best thing she did was to let Alex go and have Alex not worry about her so much.

I am not sure if I would have done the same things that she did. That guy who gave her the care really like her and she knew it. Although she mentioned she did not want to get involved she still in some ways gave him false hope. Even when Sean was trying to maintain his sobriety by not working in the bar she insisted he go back to work there. Alex definitely exhibited signs of individualism. but she was also helpful to her clients showing a more empathic side, but again it benefited her. just two examples that stuck out to me. Yeah, by episode 2 I was done. With this wishy washy definition of abuse anyone can claim abuse at any time. Hell, Sean can argue he was abused by the fact that daughter was kidnapped in the middle of the night, left alone in a dangerous environment, and nearly died on the freeway. It's kind of disgusting that a woman can scream "abuse" when no actual abuse happened. If she acknowledged/acknowledges that he could have legit hurt her during his drug fueled rage, then fair enough. Instead, this seems very "you were 'controlling'" type of abuse, which should be a slap in the face to any DV victim with a caved in skull or shattered jaw

It kind of broke my heart to see Sean get sober, try really hard to work with Alex on shared custody, be so good to Maddy, so good and patient with Paula and then just be rejected at every turn and not given an ounce of support. He wanted so badly to be told he was doing a good job and to know his efforts meant something. He was trying so hard to make amends and grow as a person. It was really hard to view him as an irredeemable villain. He was a very hurt and damaged person too who was worthy of love and compassion just as much as Alex. I was sad that in the end his downward spiral is what led to her getting what she wanted, especially since it was her applying to college without telling him that pushed him over the edge.

I think the ending is what made him look like he was redeemable. They had a trauma bond and he was taking advantage of her dependency on him. His addiction led him to do things that should not be tolerated in a relationship. If she stayed with him, he would have kept thinking that he can do whatever he wants, he wouldn’t ever take responsibility and it definitely would have gotten worse. Her leaving was a favor to him, a wake up call to take accountability and an opportunity to truly change for his daughter.

I think Alex is just too selfish, she didn’t even think about Sean, like at all, Plus leading him on into thinking that they’re gonna get back together (as told by Alex friend at her party) and by kissing him when she knows that she doesn’t want Sean to be in her future, she’s kinda toxic here just to get what she wants, she lied. Sean has to work double triple shift just to make money just to support her and maddy until he miss his meetings (she didn’t care although she heard what his dad been talking), like she secretly had another plans to leave after all Sean try to make amends. Like when Sean got fired as if she didn’t hear that. Like her father have changed and everything but she’s just being rude to her dad all the time it’s just pissing me off and she just make things all about herself. She didn’t care if Sean falls as long as she can fly. I think the cycle of abuse repeats itself due to her own fault for not trying to try to forgive his dad or actually investigate what really happened, like ask her dad and hears him out (cuz her mom is bipolar and the memory is to short to make conclusion) (even her mom said her dad too try to locked her up too into psych ward) or even try to have empath and take his Dad’s help so that both can fly, I don’t agree how this series only focus on Alex instead of really shows Sean and her Dads pov Like whaaatt

This story of an emotionally disturbed woman making very poor selfish choices and taking very bad advice from all the wrong people. Her husband was taking steps to improve himself she could have supported him in that instead she endangers and neglects her child throughout. Seriously she took her child to live with convicts to protect her from her own father who yelled at her when he got angry? She took the child to sleep on the floor of a public transit hub. Left her in a car on the side of the road. Left her with a bipolar woman and her suspect as hell boyfriend. They paint this narrative of the struggles she goes though to give her child a worse life than she currently has as if she didn’t just check a few simple boxes like apply for welfare taking three day motherhood class. And that made her more fit than the father?
