I don't need it to be a copy of the original, but I expect the changes they make to improve or smooth out aspects of the original rather than downgrade them, and there are definitely instances where it's the latter. Having only watched the 1st episode so far, here's some of the things I didn't like: - Aang didn't run away here, which undermines the guilt he's supposed to have about abandoning his post. Instead here he decided to take Appa for a stroll in a storm, which makes him look more like an idiot, and less like a distraught kid - Sokka is humorless, and considering , I'm concerned he will be a hallow husk throughout this show - The dialogue feels a bit forced and unnatural at times - Why show Katara unable to waterbend, only to do it perfectly after hearing a 5 second cryptic proverb? - Firebending seems to be limited to an "open fist, curled fingers, fireball comes out" move. It exists between air and earth in the cycle for a reason. It should have aspect of both elements in its forms and movements Other than that, I liked most of the new things they did here.

What matters it the essence of the show and characters remain and I think they nailed it.

7:38 The Show, the comics and other media for the 100 year war explained how the airbenders ere wiped out. They attacked all temples at once. And for those that were traveling. They set up traps like the one Aang fell for in the comic. I think the card game (dont 100% remember) there was a character, an air nomad that betrayed his people. But i think that was also a non canon character. But either way they explained how things went down already.

I don't care what people say about not comparing it to the OG show. It's an adaptation ... of course I'm going to compare it. If you want me to treat it like an original, then MAKE AN ORIGINAL story....At the end of the day it's meant to adapt the OG show. I understand how adaptations aren't exactly the same and that's ok... but to change things that I think are fundamental to the show i.e character stuff (Aang not running away and being a playful silly kid, Sokka not being sexist, Katara being so dull when she's feisty and passionate and head strong in the OG and small character moments) It doesn't need to be the same. I just think it should be better than this. I enjoyed seeing dark exciting action scenes but? It's missing a balance of light heartedness and joy that makes the darker themes impactful. I personally wanted a more faithful adaptation with ADDED stuff (not changed and rushed) and able to go darker/more adult in the ways the OG couldn't because it was on Nickelodeon. Somehow, even though it showed people getting cooked alive, the dialogue and heavy-handed exposition felt more childish than the OG ?? I feel like even the kids show knew to let the story and visuals tell most of the story/let the audience learn and grow to understand yhe world+ characters without constantly directly saying it in unnatural dialogue. The scene with Gran gran was irritating because while its supposed to be a cool call to the OG show, all I could think was "why didn't they just use this as the beginning intro?" It sounds awkward in the context of the scene. Aang slowly realizing he had been gone for 100 years was more impactful IMO I really really hope the next few episodes get better. I've only seen the first 2 episodes 😢

Absolutely agree, the constant telling instead of showing drove me insane while watching the show. The ambiguity of letting the visuals lead an audience just as much as the dialogue is so important in film, a majority of how humans communicate is through body language anyways. Being spoon fed dialogue makes it feel like they’re treating us like children. I also definitely agree about Gran Gran’s monologue reciting the opening from the original show. It felt forced and unnecessary. If they really wanted to include it I think they should’ve just put it in the beginning, but I think the opening with Kyoshi’s introduction was strong enough that it didn’t feel necessary.

27:00 exactly. It's so hard not to compare every literal shot of the shows. But really, it's not that bad. I hate the argument "why do people expect one to one". One Piece Netflix wasn't one to one yet they did it justice to the fans because they didn't fully change characters and the story. 28:38 That's a hot take. I love the new content, but I think they should've kept the info revealed in the order it originally was. I guess it made a stronger hook, but I think the mystery and finding out about the genocide as Aang does is better because it gives you questions to be answered. Like "why was he in the iceberg for 100 years?" and "What happened to the other airbenders?" and then the reveal when you see the skeletons and learn how they were all murdered, it's more intense. Compared to knowing everything that happened, so it's not as strong/emotional when you see aang finding out because you already knew the answer. They should've put the flashback to him freezing himself when he was dreaming in the tent, and they should've put in the rest of the flashbacks to the genocide and time with Gyatso when they're at the airtemple and Aang is remembering Gyatso and finding out about the genocide. It was awesome to see more of what happened, but the order in which they reveal information is very important and they kind of messed that up.

Aang DID run away. I’m not sure why they changed that as it is a big part of his character growth/development throughout the show. Same with them taking away sokka being sexist. Some of the casting choices and acting is questionable to me. Like sokka’s actor lying about being native to get the part. Katara’s acting fell flat most of the show. Surprisingly even when she was telling Aang about the fire nation attack on the village/her mother. Seemed more like she was reading off a script rather than ACTING. Also, her saving the gang from Zuko’s fire attack?? He’s a skilled fire bender and she never was able to waterbend correctly before? But you’re telling me, she was able to conjure up a move like that? They took the kid out of Aang. There’s no way a little boy stuck in ice for 100+ years would be able to pull himself out of the avatar state and also come to the epiphany that he needs to master the elements to save the world. Aang only realized the weight of that when Roku told him he needed to do it by summers end otherwise there won’t be a world to save. The story pacing is also really quick and I dislike how serious Iroh is in this 😭 it is def a step up from M night Shitupon’s live action but it could def improve in a lot of areas.

I mean, we saw the Airbenders Genocide and the cruelty of fire nation, we saw Sokka lasting more than half of a second against Zuko (still losing tho), we saw that GREAT representation of the avatar cycle, and I personally like more the fact that Aang didn't use the avatar state on the boat, I feels like it would cut the tension for the next scene 2 avatar state scenes in less than 10min... And especially I really, really, really enjoy the Gyatsu screen time here, the fact that Aang controlled himself bc of Gyatsu words and his bonds with his tutor is WAAAAY better than controlling himself bc of a girl that he met like, today in the morning saying "bro stop plz 😔"... Gyatsu is way more important to Aang... And Katara did her part too there, she held him after that moment, but she wasn't the main motivation to calm down him... Zuko and Iroh are great too, but they get more attention a few episodes later so... Keep going guys

Difference list I noticed: - Aang already has the whistle, instead of buying it at the port village; - No penguin sledding; - No Appa snort gag with Sokka still in the iceberg; - No Katara getting Sokka wet; - The village kids around Sokka and Katara's age exist and Sokka leads them, he's not a nanny like in the original; - Sokka put up a fight longer than 2 kicks and a boomerang gag; - No "I'll show you he can fly", and accidental "yip-yip" from Sokka making him surprised they are flying plus Karata smug face silently saying "I told you so, you were the one who didn't believe it"; - The war started after Aang left instead of the monks hearing about the war in the earth kingdom and rushing Aang's training from 16 to 12 years old which caused him to panic and run; - The air nomads died in the same day Aang left, which in the cartoon there's no set time between Aang missing and Sozin's comet day; - The attack happened in a single place instead of all temples and nomad traps like in the original canon; - No damage to the ship when Aang flees for Zhao to question later when Zuko's ship stops at a port for maintenance. Let's hope the port village and the pirates still exist.

All of those are ok. The problem is Katara is the most expressionless person I've ever seen. It's like she's mentally dead. Sokka is boring. They are not going to the north to Aang learn waterbending, but because they will be in danger??? But they will be in danger only if Aang goes there... Makes no sense. Aang already wants and have the responsibility of being a leader, and what's he has to do. There is no development. He is already developted. There is soooo much exposition: characters say all there is to know, as if the viewers were dumb. Specially Iroh, my god, stop talking. Aang don't waterbend... Like, this is Book 1: water. My main issue was with how some of the characters felt, mainly Katara. I feel the best interpretation from the cartoon characters to human was Sokka and Zuko. I felt like the actors were able to bring a lot of the original characters to life. But I felt like Katara lost a lot of her personality, and I don’t really blame the actress because while watching the series I felt like they cut out/ didn’t include a lot of Kataras cartoon scenes where we learn more about her character. Aangs character also felt a little off, and towards the end of the series Aangs character starts to improve, in my opinion. But the relationship/ connect between Aang and Kataras character never fells like it’s there. There is no chemistry between the two and that is what made me kinda dislike a specific Scene at the end of the series. BUT, overall the casting for the characters (look wise) was on point. The cgi is pretty good and they did bring to life a lot of scenery quite well. If Netflix does release a season two I think they need to work more on the character/ the portrayal of the characters.
