Ladies and gentlemen, the day has finally come: Netflix's live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has finally released. But after six years and a ton of controversy, was it truly worth the wait? Short answer: no it was kinda mid lol. Long answer: in this video, I am aiming to make the most comprehensive and rational review about the first season as I possibly can, going over every change, both good and bad, how I think the show can improve going forward, and how no matter how good or bad an adaptation might be, you can never replace the original Avatar. #avatar #avatarthelastairbender

It’s like someone tried to copy and paste from the A student, but didn’t wanna make it too obvious so they deliberately ruined most of it and tried to make the answers look like their own by altering them

I mean, for the “a hundred year war” bit, it’s not an actual problem because people round these things up all the time. There was an actual war called the “hundred year war” between France and England, and it lasted like, 116 years or sth, but nobody is gonna call it the “116 years war”.

You make a lot of good points as usual, thank you! I'm still not eager to go back after watching the first episode. Even if the exposition gets less obnoxious later, the script still felt so bad to me. You saying the first episode was one of the better ones makes me apprehensive. More importantly though, what the hell did Katara do to get screwed over like this twice? She's great, so do her some fucking justice, entertainment industry! (Edit as I forgot to say this before submitting the comment:) I'm happy that you still found enjoyment in it though. It's good to have fun with a new Avatar property!

That conclusion hits the nail on the head - the focus should always be on improving what’s to come and I have enough faith that constructive criticism like yours will make their way to the fans making this show and hopefully we’ll see it reflected in the final two seasons 🤞

I like to be optimistic. But i also know that it won t happen. The writers aren t changed and too many character arcs have been botched for them to fit like they should later on. (Like the whole dynamics in the fire lord s family) A lot of build up is either not there or made impossible to happen, so later pay off will either come as undeserved or not at all. I just hope they won t fail too hard and make Toph too bad (on a movie level kind of fail)

@@etienne8110 I definitely see where you’re coming from. That said, imo this show wasn’t at its best when it was doing 1-to-1 recreations of the original and it was at its worst when collapsing multiple plot lines for the sake of shoehorning (I really think making bumi bitter was a huge misstep). I think this season was at its best when it was introducing new elements and bringing in content from the books. In the animated series all three seasons were planned out, hopefully the live action can offer us something fresh that expands on what we loved in the original now that it has the chance to tell a more cohesive/long-term story across the remaining 2 seasons. At the very least, I hope you’re pleasantly surprised if you plan to watch the next two seasons!

Team Avatar specifically the characterization of Sokka, Katara and Aang where just weak and Waterdown in this adaptation. I can see them improving this for Sokka and Katara for later seasons but for Aang!!! It’s going to be tough since they gave him a blameless character flaw🙃

I won't lie, I only got through the first 2 episodes before calling it. I just couldn't get into it, and I felt like most of the changes hurt the story rather than recontextualize or improved it. Though I guess I did give up pretty early.

I don’t agree with the take that this show was not needed. You mentioned how some adults dismiss animated shows as being for kids and that’s exactly why I’m glad that they adapted it to live action. Being able to finally talk about avatar with my older siblings and my parents after they watched the Netflix version has been great and they’re even open to watching the animated series. Even though it wasn’t perfect, I’m glad it at least made this fantastic story a little more accessible to a larger audience

Personally, both Avatar the Last Airbender & One Piece are personal favorite series of mine (grew up with ATLA and have been following One Piece since 2009). I went into both live actuon shows with an open mind and I enjoyed them. Not nearly as much as the originals, but I still had a fun time with both.

I really like this layered review. There is way too much frothing at the mouth going on in the reviews. I had tons of fun with my sister watching this and yes it is definitely very flawed but I see so much potential in this series and it is FUN I think newcomers will be much more forgiving. The "odies" definitely give this serise more "tough love". I won't write this series off but they have to get better faster quick especially with having season 2 and 3 approved I hope the plot can be saved by fleshing it out and not just glossed over the gross misjudgments they made with the lead trio.

The actress who plays Katara was so bad in my opinion. It totally took me completely out of it. Aang wasn't too great either but I think the majority of Aangs issues were from the directing

I d say a 5/10. At least, most visuals and sfx are good and the cast is mostly good (except team azula). But the changes in the story and characters arcs really hurt the show and it will only het worse as plotline won t be able to bloom like they should have.
